I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.

A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.

As part of my workshop 'the Decisive Photographer', I did a one hour live shoot. I wanted to play it fair and didn't check the location or anything in advance. We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.

We used the sun as a backlight to create separation between subject and background. We underexposed the ambient to retain a bit of blue in the sky (1/250 at f/10). Subject was lit with a 580EXII flash with shoot through umbrella to camera left.

My son Kobe is a real soccer freak. In his first year at a soccer team, it was basically just 10 kids chaotically running for the ball. But now (second year) they really start to play soccer.

It sure is fun to watch them play. I don't bring my camera very often but because last time was so long ago, I took some pictures last Saturday.

The guys from Canon asked me if I could do some workshops at the Canon Eos Discovery Days. It was a bit weird for me to do this in front of such a huge and diverse audience in a really short time but it was big fun and I met tons of great people.

For those who couldn't be there or didn't understand my very special interpretation of the French language, I decided to try to replicate my workshop on my blog. 3 new posts are coming up.

Being a member of the Strobist cult, using speedlights off camera has been second nature to me and lots of other photographers for quite some time now. But the majority of photographers still don't know that you can do this. That's why I did a quick lighting setup, starting with just one speedlight and showing the process of adding two more lights.

LIGHTING INFO

We started out with just one 580EX II on a stand with a white shoot through umbrella to camera left. Flash was on 1/16 and triggered with the ST-E2 on camera.

To separate the model from the black background, I placed another 580EXII (on 1/16) with a black straw grid on the opposite side of the main light to give me some hair light.

Photographing 5 kids is always a challenge but this time it went pretty smooth.

Cullera, Valencia, SPAIN

I was asked to do a presentation at the AFPV congress in Spain about photography 2.0

I was told in advance that this congress is always a lot of fun but I wasn't prepared for so much fun, inspiration and friendship.

I didn't plan to talk about technique or lighting but lots of people expressed their interest in my lighting style on location. So I decided to do an improvised off-camera flash demo in and around the hotel on the last day. Carol is a talented Spanish photographer and also proved to be an excellent model. Not easy when you have 50+ people looking at you.

I didn't have any speedlights or triggers with me, so I borrowed a battery powered studio light. We shot everything with just the one light and a standard reflector.

The main light is natural light and we used a hair light to create a more sunny feel.

A few years ago I made a video of Ann's 18th birthday party. Ann and her parents went throught some really though times during the last years. To celebrate that everything is going well again they threw another party. Ann and her friens might be handicapped but boy do they know how to party.

I photographed this party to thank those great kids and their supporting families for one of the best parties I've ever been to.

No well paid commercial job or drop dead gorgeous model shoot can compeed with this. This is what really counts.

A series of images about how I build up a groupshot outdoors at night, combining flash with a long shutterspeed to get enough ambient light in.

Third testshot with camera on a tripod and myself as a standin to test the power of the two bare speedlights (one left, one right) on the subjects. I think this was at 1/8 and the picture told me that this was just a bit too dark, so I changed them to 1/4.

On closer examination of the background, I discovered that one of the lights on the building (left in the frame) wasn't working and disturbed the symmetry of the composition.

Alpendorf, Sankt-Johan im Pongau, AUSTRIA

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.

When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.

I was seriously considering not doing weddings anymore next year, in fact the decision was made. But some amazing weddings this year made me recall that decision. Bart and Marleen are two fantastic people who trusted my vision and skills completely and are amongst some other couples that pushed me to go on.

Next year I'm going to do a limited amount of weddings and I'm going to do it my way. I'll focus on quality instead of quantity. I won't guarantee to capture every little moment any more but I will guarantee that I'll capture the mood of the day in less but better pictures.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys

Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.

We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.

Even more fun than the fishing was the fact that Sven took us on a heavy off-road track to the fishing spot in an old 4x4. Engine troubles made the adventure even cooler to Kobe. Luckily we managed to get the Suzuki up and running again fast.

We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.

We wanted to use the lines and reflections of this place. First we got the background well exposed. These settings made our subject go completely black so we had to call in a flash.

A bare 580EX was placed to camera left and we played around with the flash power until we balanced the subject (lit with flash) with the background (natural light). This was shot at 1/100 at f/2.8

Lighting and background could have been better but this shot was made just to show how to balance flash and ambient.

Yesterday we bought one of those giant trampolines for the kids. They really love it and showed off the whole day. When I stuck my head into the safety net, I noticed the round shapes, she unusual angle and the nice clouds. It immediately struck me that this would be a perfect situation to photograph with my new 8mm Peleng Fisheye lens.
