This image was shot for a sequence where we explain the importance of giving yourself some time to play from time to time in order to grow as a photographer. We did an improvisations shoot. The models wanted to do some kind of retro themed shoot and I wanted to shoot a bit with my Hasselblad 500cm on Kodak Tri-X 400, perfect match. We also shot a number of testshots with a DSLR and some of these actually came out pretty well too.

I strongly (convince myself to) believe that professional photographers should take some time to play every now and then. We played around all the time when we where amateurs and that's what made us good enough to go pro anyway. So to become a better pro, I try to allow some time to play in my tight schedule.
A few months ago I got into a conversation between some like minded photographers and we decided to do some kind of fun shoot together. I actually didn't have the time but I went anyway. And I'm glad I did, because I came back with more energy and motivation.
Model Fauve in the dunes was lit with the low sun coming from camera left and a California Sunbounce mini micro reflector (silver) to camera right (just out of the frame.

As part of my workshop 'the Decisive Photographer', I did a one hour live shoot. I wanted to play it fair and didn't check the location or anything in advance. We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.
We used the sun as a backlight to create separation between subject and background. We underexposed the ambient to get a pretty dark background (1/250 at f/22). Subject was lit with a 580EXII flash with shoot through umbrella to camera left.

Due to very busy schedules on both sides I couldn't do this engagement session until 3 days prior to the actual wedding. The couple were dealing with some organisational stuff so the session was cut short to less than an hour of actual shooting while the daylight was fading very quickly.
We still managed to pull some shots off and more importantly: we had fun and got to know each other a bit better.
I lowered the shutterspeed to 1/20 to get some ambient light in the picture. A Canon 580EX II was placed in the nearby bathroom and shot through the mat glass door to create a big soft lightsource.

I don't shoot many weddings anymore but how could I resist shooting the big day of a good friend and his stunning bride.
I always tell my clients that I'm doing the fly-on-the-wall approach in church. At the beginning of the ceremony I tipped over this huge flag and balanced it for a few very long seconds barely managing to keep it from falling on the couple. So far for being a fly-on-the-wall

It doesn't happen too often here in Belgium that we get a nice layer of snow that pretty much covers everything. And when it happens it usually doesn't take more than a few days before it's gone. So I did absolutely wanted to do a shoot in the snow. I had this image in my head of a guy in a suit in the snowy fields. (Don't ask me why, that's just the way my chaotic brain works.) My friend David offered to pose so we went for a quick improvised 20 minute shoot in the fields behind my house.
As you probably know if you follow my stream, I'm completely in love with my 34yo Hasselblad 500CM camera, so that became my weapon of choice for this shoot. Shot with the 80mm lens somewhere around f11 - f16 on Kodak Tri-X 400. This scene was backlit by the sun, the snow reflects enough light to light David's face. Scanned with the Epson V700.

My son Kobe is a real soccer freak. In his first year at a soccer team, it was basically just 10 kids chaotically running for the ball. But now (second year) they really start to play soccer.
It sure is fun to watch them play. I don't bring my camera very often but because last time was so long ago, I took some pictures last Saturday.

A few years ago I made a video of Ann's 18th birthday party. Ann and her parents went throught some really though times during the last years. To celebrate that everything is going well again they threw another party. Ann and her friens might be handicapped but boy do they know how to party.
I photographed this party to thank those great kids and their supporting families for one of the best parties I've ever been to.
No well paid commercial job or drop dead gorgeous model shoot can compeed with this. This is what really counts.

I just got myself a Peleng, that's an 8mm russian fisheye lens. It's full manual and a bit awkward to use but I allready saw some stunning shots made with it. This is not the kind of lens that will sit on my camera for a whole wedding but I hope I will be able to create a few original shots with it.

I was asked to give a demonstration about the way I work with off-camera flash on an event for the Belgian Federation of Professional Photographers. I gave a presentation for 20 minutes together with my buddy and wedding photographer Pieter Van Impe. Later that day we did a 45 minute live shoot.
I wanted to show how I improvise with the model and the location, so I didn't prepare anything. It wasn 't easy to look for backgrounds, set up lights, make pics and at the same time explain what I was doing to 60 photographers. So it's not my best work but I hope I gave an idea of the endless possibilities of small flashes.

Lately I have been busier than a supermodel who sells her body for 1 dollar/hour. There have been lots of exciting assignments, some future plans and lots of time and energy are put in the new house/studio.
Here's a little update on the studio:
This is a view of the first floor, or second floor, depending on where you live (anyway it's one floor above ground level.
We will have a completely new roof up with some windows in it. The 'stage' in the back will be closed off and become my office. The area on the left will become a seating/lounging area and I'm not sure yet what to do with the 'stage' to the right. It's as big (but a bit higher up) than the future office.

A series of images about how I build up a groupshot outdoors at night, combining flash with a long shutterspeed to get enough ambient light in.
This first quick test shot at iso 800, f/5.6, 1/2 second gave me an idea of the ballpark I needed to be in to expose the building in the background correctly. By using my hand as a stand-in I could also tell there was not going to be any light on the foreground (this was necessary to avoid motion blur of the subjects).
I know the background is blurred but it was just a testshot to determine the right exposure.

Last Saturday my wife was out with her friends and my parents kidnapped my kids, so I unexpectedly ended up home alone. Since I received some new studio lighting equipment last week, I couldn't resist setting up a quick improvised test shoot. I asked on Twitter if anyone wanted to pose for me and Lut, the wife of a fellow photographer, volunteered. Thanks Lut for being so stunning and patient.
As this was mainly a test for the new lighting equipment I shot mostly digital. But I just couldn't resist to shoot a couple of rolls of film with my Hasselblad. First time I shot it in combination with flash.

We just took a walk and stopped when we saw some good light, backgrounds, ... for portraits. Thanks to some of the people in the class for modelling.
This picture is part of the demonstration of my 'under cover' technique. This is based on the fact that the light usually gets a lot better when the subject stands under some cover . Here it was a garage and by having the subject stand about 1 meter in the garage, the light becomes more directional than in the open shade. So the open end of the garage becomes the main (natural) light.
To get some depth in the picture we placed a 580EXII flash behind the subject (camera right) as a hair light/kicker. By making the flash beam a bit larger, the hair light flash doubles as a background light to get some detail in the background.

I am not a sports photographer at all but I find it fun to shoot one of my son's soccer games from time to time. I really enjoy it although my respect for sports photographers grows every time I attempt taking some good action shots.
TECHNICAL INFO
I used a 1D mkIII with a 70-200 and a 2x extender on a Gitzo monopod. The extender reduces the 70-200 to an f5.6 lens that doesn't always focus fast and accurate enough. The extender also reduces the image quality, certainly in backlit situation. I can't justify getting a 400mm f/4 to shoot for fun but for what I use it, the 70-200 + extender is more than good enough.
Oh yeah, they won 1-22!

Selfportrait of Kobe and me with the camera on timer.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys
Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.
We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.
Waking up on the beach and then taking an early morning walk is just great.
