Just a snap from the family holiday in France. As a professional photographer it's tempting to lug around all that gear on holiday but I find it important to step away from photography from time to time and just focus on my family. I only took 400 images in two weeks and mostly just with my small digicam (and a waterproof housing).

Just a few pictures from our family holiday. Travelling with 3 small kids can be pretty exhausting so I packed just a minimum of photo gear: my Ixus and a DSLR with one lens (which stayed in the hotel safe for most of the time anyway).
I'm so happy the kids like the sea just as much as I do.

I'm having a blast teaching a two day workshop in this wonderful city with an equally wonderful group of photographers. Linnea was our model for today. Despite the fact that posing when 25 photographers are watching you is really difficult, she was amazing and unleashed one killer look upon the other.

First roll of film with the Holga. I dropped and partly unrolled the film when I tried to get it out of the camera. this caused severe light leaks, but I kind of like it.

Holidays are over for the kids. For Maya it's an exciting time. She will go to school for the first time. She's ready for it and shows of her brand new backpack. We took this picture to give as a present to the people in daycare who took care of her so well for the past 3 years.

I was asked to do a presentation at the AFPV congress in Spain about photography 2.0
I was told in advance that this congress is always a lot of fun but I wasn't prepared for so much fun, inspiration and friendship.
I didn't make much pictures but I shot a few at the dress party. This is Mike, the security guard of the hotel.

This image was shot for a sequence where we explain the importance of giving yourself some time to play from time to time in order to grow as a photographer. We did an improvisations shoot. The models wanted to do some kind of retro themed shoot and I wanted to shoot a bit with my Hasselblad 500cm on Kodak Tri-X 400, perfect match. We also shot a number of testshots with a DSLR and some of these actually came out pretty well too.

After we finished the 'Running in 2020' pictures, we were joined by pro model Sylvianne. We improvised and had a lot of fun with Dirk and Sylvianne. This picture was shot outside. Dirk reminded me of Iggy Pop and I wanted to make some harsh Iggy-images of him.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.
I have replaced my backup camera (that was stolen) with a 1Ds mkII. Because I never worked intensively with this camera befor, I took it on holliday to get used to it and play around.

Our two oldest kids, Kobe and Maya, are really relaxed about their baby sister Noa getting most of the attention these days. But yesterday was all about them. We dropped Noa of at my parents and took Kobe and Maya to Plopsaland (a theme park). We all had so much fun.
At the end of the day, we didn't even left the parking lot and Maya was allready asleep.

Tonight I was one of the few fortunate people who got to play with a beta version of the new Canon EOS 5D mkII
I only held it for like two minutes but that was enough to be really impressed. It feels and handles well and it's amazing how little noise you get with such a megapixel packed sensor at high resolution.
I shot some HD video's at high iso's and they look just amazing. Too bad I'm not allowed to share them yet.
Because this is a beta camera there's no software that can handle the RAW-files, that's why I shot this picture in jpeg. This pictures was shot at iso 3200.
This is how it looks straight out of the camera.
I'm very impressed with this camera, thanks Canon.

I held my 580EX in my left hand (camera with ST-E2 in my right hand). The camera was on manual and set to 1/80 and f/2.2 at iso 800. I pointed the flash behind me on an almost white wall and let the Japanese engineers inside the flash and ST-E2 do the rest.
I prefer to control everything by setting the flashes manually but sometimes the automatic stuff comes in really handy for some down-and-dirty shots

Suzanne is an Egyptian beauty who lives in Antwerp. She needed a small portfolio to audition for a part in a videoclip from her favorite Egyptian artist.
Suzanne's great looks, fantastic smile, natural posing skills and fun character made it easy for me. It's hard to believe that she never posed before and was very nervous the first 15 minutes.

Like almost every year for the past 10 years or so, my parents and our little family went for a ski holiday in Austria.
When I recentely borrowed an Ixus in Valencia because my gear was stolen, I realised I had to get a good compact camera myself, so I bought a Canon Ixus. It's far from as powerful as my DSLR's but because it fits in my pocket I can take it with me all the time. Great for some memories I wouldn't have captured otherwise.
Maya did really well for her first time on ski's.

I am not a sports photographer at all but I find it fun to shoot one of my son's soccer games from time to time. I really enjoy it although my respect for sports photographers grows every time I attempt taking some good action shots.
TECHNICAL INFO
I used a 1D mkIII with a 70-200 and a 2x extender on a Gitzo monopod. The extender reduces the 70-200 to an f5.6 lens that doesn't always focus fast and accurate enough. The extender also reduces the image quality, certainly in backlit situation. I can't justify getting a 400mm f/4 to shoot for fun but for what I use it, the 70-200 + extender is more than good enough.
Oh yeah, they won 1-22!

LIGHTING INFO:
I'm always looking for new techniques to spice up my wedding photography. Here I placed an SB-24 flash behind and above the dancefloor to create a cool backlight. I think the flash was at 1/4 power and it was triggered with Pocketwizards.
I placed the flash opposite a wall where a large white cloth was hanging. I aimed the flash head a bit above the heads so the light would also hit and reflect from the white cloth to act as fill light.
Usually I try to avoid lens flare but I thought it looked pretty cool here.

Pro model Sylviane read on my Facebook that I was scouting a location near where she lives. By the time I finished scouting we arranged to have a short improvised fun shoot.
I only had a camera + 24-70 + speedlight in my bag. In the trunk of my car, I also found a Sunbounce mini. But not having all my gear with me, couldn't stop us from having a fun 30 minute shoot.
At home, I only spent another 30 minutes postprocessing the shoot in Lightroom
The limited gear forced me to be creative and I actually rediscovered a cool lighting technique.

My son Kobe sometimes doesn't get the attention I'd like to give him. So once in while we take some time to do something fun with jus the guys
Kobe had been talking about fishing, so I asked one of my best friends Sven (aka Ponette) to take us fishing.
We spent the afternoon at a creek but didn't catch anything. But we took enough food for a nice bbq on the beach anyway. Sleeping in a tent on the beach was quite an adventure for Kobe. The three of us really enjoyed it.
Waking up on the beach and then taking an early morning walk is just great.
