Happy Sunday!

I appreciate your visit and comment.

The begonia genus is one of the largest and most diverse and its cultivars even moreso. This example is a common garden and indoor plant generally preferring cooler situations though a few of these cope well in my sub-tropical Gold-Coast hinterland garden.

Thank you for your comments & fav.!

Raindrops add a touch of beauty to this newly planted begonia in my San Francisco garden. Northern California has had an equal number of rainy and dry days since the beginning of the year, and I am beginning to tire of raindrops... But I would rather have rain than drought!

Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

Begonia grandis

Begonia grandis is a plant in the begonia family, Begoniaceae. It is a herbaceous plant with alternate, simple leaves, on arching stems. The flowers are pink or white, borne in fall.

This begonia seemed to look best photographed from the backside with a ray of sun striking the front. I am not sure backlit is the right term, but I liked the look. Most of our flowers are past their prime but the begonias are going strong. I have had these begonias for a number of years and they do well with going dorment and then restarting them in the spring.

Begonia is a genus of perennial flowering plants in the family Begoniaceae. The genus contains more than 1,800 different plant species. The Begonias are native to moist subtropical and tropical climates. Some species are commonly grown indoors as ornamental houseplants in cooler climates. In cooler climates some species are cultivated outside in summertime for their bright colourful flowers, which have sepals but no petals. Begonia is one of the largest genera of flowering plants. The species are terrestrial (sometimes epiphytic) herbs or undershrubs, and occur in subtropical and tropical moist climates, in South and Central America, Africa, and southern Asia. Terrestrial species in the wild are commonly upright-stemmed, rhizomatous, or tuberous. The plants are monoecious, with unisexual male and female flowers occurring separately on the same plant; the male contains numerous stamens, and the female has a large inferior ovary and two to four branched or twisted stigmas. In most species, the fruit is a winged capsule containing numerous minute seeds, although baccate fruits are also known. The leaves, which are often large and variously marked or variegated, are usually asymmetric (unequal-sided). 10680

Dragon Wing Pink Begonia

Shuukaidou (hardy begonia, Begonia grandis) is a perennial flowering plant in the Begoniaceae (begonia) family. It is native to southern China and the Malay peninsula. As the name suggests, it is a rare species in the begonia family that can overwinter in Japan.

It was brought to Japan as a gardening plant from China but now grows wild. It blooms in late August and September.
