Possibly the biggest, baddest, most bulbous speeder bike to emerge from the drawing boards of Llwyngwril Systems. The Turbinia was based around a massive turbine.
Centuries later, all the evidence left for its existence are these four archive photos. They leave many questions unanswered:
Was the giant turbine some form of centrifugal compressor? If so, were did the all of air go? The nozzles on the rear of the bike are quite small.
As the turbine made up a considerable part of the mass of the speeder bike and was effectively a large gyroscope, how the Turbinia generate enough turning force to manoeuvre?
How did the pilot get up to the cockpit?
The mechanics of the anti-gravity systems needed for the Turbinia to hover are, of course, simple and well known.

As you can tell by the two different images, I was not testing with the same length of exposure! I promise! I was testing the width of the 14mm on the crop (1.6) sensor VS the width on the 14mm on the full frame sensor, with the 5D MkII! And here you have it, my first post ever from using the 5D MkII! And There isn't even any exif data to show you because of the stacking software! But I assure you, this is from the 5D.
Kind of looks like the thumb print of God? Now before I get a lot of comments about how this star trails is TOO long and its nothing but stars and light, you have to remember, I was going for that EXTRA long effect, and I wanted to see how much traction I could get on that north star! The verdict is almost in. Last night, I acheved my biggest, baddest and LONGEST star trail EVER! This is what 9 hours of star movement looks like! It might be even more then 9 hours when you take in account the one second pause between each and every exposure!

Speaking of exposure, this is a total of 1013 exposures! Ya, you read that right, over a thousand exposures on this one! Each one being:

I used the new Rokinon 14mm 2.8 prime that I bought just for star trails! And here is the kicker, look at last star trail. Thats the same glass on the 7D, MAN, I had no idea there was THAT much more width with the full frame sensor! I am happy about that! I even, in the far top right corner, have some stars over the equator! For the record, I think the full sensor was a much better fit, there are quite a bit of air craft lights out there, but only a few can really be scene! I do believe its because of the camera and glass combo!

Liz and Austin's steampunked wedding cake. The metallic gears, doors, rivets, and panels were all made of fondant and were entirely edible. This is probably the baddest-ass wedding cake you will ever see. Respect.
Best part: the cake tasted just as decadent as it looked! I had a slice of the lemon layer after photographing it.

Yas Waterworld Surf’s up! Bubbles' Barrel slide has the largest surf-able sheet wave surf in the world. The Bandit Bomber is the first rollercoaster to be incorporated into a waterpark and was ranked amongst the world’s newest, biggest and baddest roller coasters for the summer of 2013, by CNN.
CAZ and I had a lengthy wait at Sulphur for this S573, so we passed the time by staring at the sun, kicking the remains of a deer leg, and trying to shatter a floating Ale-8 bottle in the ditch across the tracks, while also trying not to die of heat stroke.
Eventually, the sun came out for good, Z nailed the bottle with a piece of ballast, I picked up the baddest-ass sunburn of my life, and then the train finally came around the curve at a blistering 5 mph pace. Only in my dreams did I think I would actually get a good leader at this spot, but CSX came through in the clutch when they tacked this YN2 C40-8 in front of three UP shitboxes before the train left Cincy. Raise the camera, click the shutter a few times, then shove my head into our cooler full of Monster, Cheerwine, Ale-8, and Sarsaparilla. You could say it was a good trip.
It's October 31st 1998, and CSXT GP40-2 #6156 is westbound at Gaithersburg, and rolling along at a pretty good clip considering the blurriness. Almost 18 years later to the week, I would be running 6156 as my lead engine on a westbound freight through Gaithersburg in a similar fashion.
Allow me to bend your ear and stroke my ego at the same time: It was middle October 2016, and I had been working out of Richmond Va for about ten months as I had to chase my seniority after a bit of pre-PSR bloodletting meant I couldn't hold stuff around "home". I was actually holding an I2 engineer pool turn in the Richmond to Brunswick pool at that point and I got called one night for 2300 on an S400 from Acca to Brunswick. When traffic warranted, this extra 400 train would be called to forward cars to Brunswick and Cumberland...not like today where all this shit is combined into one giant landbarge that usually doesn't make it under 12 hours. ANYWAYS, I didn't really know the conductor that well (at the time) so we didn't chat much as we got our power (#6156 and a CW44AC) from the Bryan Park shop, and sashayed over to Acca's "north yard" to double out about 3 tracks. I don't remember the totals, but the train was around 8000'...pretty good for the time, and definitely hardy for the power and terrain on our overnight dash to Brunswick.
We left Richmond, and having an absolute hard on for Chessie GP40-2s, my window was open while the sidewalls were "on". #6156 is special for a few reasons; it retains both it's front and rear Chessie rock pilots, and it formerly wore Western Maryland #4257. It also just so happens to be one of the finest engines on the CSX roster in terms of how well everything works on it. The whole night, we're charging up the railroad...I'm running as hot at my nerves will let me. The brass brake handle of #6156 matched my brass reverser I run with. I know for a fact there was a Wawa coffee cup on the control stand, and it was probably empty by Milford. Between the roar of the engine and the wind, my conductor and I didn't say much but that was okay- I was in the "zone". Then came that part in the trip where we would start plying the Metropolitan Sub, and thus the rails I hung around every waking moment I could possibly get away with. It was some time around 5am when we leaned into the curve into Gaithersburg, and my favorite part of the trip; the hallowed ground of my most treasured memories. Like usual at this spot, I aim to be the biggest and baddest thing in town; throttle in 8, horn ripping, and engineer framed in his window wearing a denim jacket. Even if nobody ever sees me, I see me, especially here. I hold onto the 8th notch longer than I should (always trying to push the envelope) as we crest the hill. I break my nerve (as I usually do) around Chestnut St as the train is really all downhill and quickly eating up track speed. Naturally, it's too late for dynamics so I take a bite of automatic to ride her down Clopper. A final "bite" near the bottom to get the required 10lb reduction, and go after the throttle to pull everything back out of the dip. Then we continue like normal to Brunswick and some work in the yard before handing off to the Cumberland east short pool guys. When we pulled up to a stop at Brunswick before beginning our moves, the conductor said something to me that I will forever be proud of; "That was the fastest, smoothest trip to Brunswick I've ever had. Those guys always complain about getting these old motors, but now I know what the real problem is- they don't know how to run them!"
I had "arrived", so to speak. THAT is what I was going for...THAT is the end result of a lifetime obsession that I can't really put into words. We made our yard moves and handed off to the outbound, but I would have taken her all the way to Cumberland if they had let me. Of course now CSX has that idiotic ban on mixing 4-axles and AC/AH engines resulting in a defacto ban on Geeps leading road trains, and 99.9999% of our trains are powered by Gevos running themselves in TO, so no more showboating. But for a little bit, it was heaven.
