This aluminum cast of an ant nest is featured in the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) exhibit "Farmers, Warriors, and Builders: The Hidden Life of Ants."
Some species build deep, elaborate nests, while others do quite well in small, shallow ones. A nest’s size and shape also depends on the soil, climate, and the size and age of the ant colony.
