Crowd waiting anxiously outside Zouk for the event to start

I was invited by my friend Jos to tag along with his photoshoot at the Latin Deluxe Salsa dancing event by Salsa Contigo in CCOG eventspace in Duiven. It was my chance to try event photography without too much pressure, enjoy some salsa music and do something I had not done before, shooting fast-moving dancers in low light.

Lessons learned:

- Shoot with (bounced) flash and slow shutter speeds to freeze movement and show motion at the same time.

- Talk with orga and demand to be kept up-to-date on schedules and key moments

- Don't Panic.

Cricket: St. Lucia vs. Trinidad & Tobago. Great atmosphere till a tropical downpour came and practically washed us all away. (Then, in fact, it was even more fun.)

If you can't make it to Zoukout this year then there will be another excellent excuse to head down to Singapore shortly after. On the 11th of January, Zou is presenting the "Mystery Jets" on their only Asia performance outside of Japan.

After postponing their last date at Zouk, Mystery Jets are back for a full length concert, their first in Asia outside Japan! Following a short stint in hospital treating the spine disorder, spina bifida and taking the necessary recovery time, Blaine Harrison the singer is back to helm Zouk’s first concert for 2009!

Zouk presents Mystery Jets (UK) live in concert!

Sunday 11 January 2009

9pm at Zouk (8pm doors open)

90 minute show + post party

With their colourful, catchy guitar pop to prog rock, Mystery Jets have been winning the hearts and minds of critics and fans alike, headlining and selling out performances. Undoubtedly influenced by the 1980’s, the bohemian, London based band’s musical heroes range from The Cure and The Smiths to Prince and Michael Jackson.

With two outstanding albums, ‘Making Dens’ (2006) and the second album ‘Twenty One’ (2008) produced by Indie DJ Mash Up Don, Erol Alkan, the results were even catchier choruses and huge stylistic instrumentations. Melodic hit singles like ‘Two Doors Down’, ‘Young Love’ ft Laura Marling and ‘Half In Love With Elizabeth’ have all made the connection between clever indie and wry pop. And the dance world have all embraced the band, with remixes by Justice, Switch and Zongamin just to name a few.

Living up to the hype, Mystery Jets live shows exude exuberance and unpredictability in a most convincingly stylish manner. “We want to communicate, says Will (guitar, vocals) but in a way that isn’t superficial, in a way that can make a difference to peoples lives. “

There is little doubt that Mystery Jets are one of the most exciting UK bands to emerge in recent years.

"Mystery Jets are a must-go-see. They score for harnessing so much energy..." getreadytorock.com

“A band working towards brilliance” NME
