This day out on the Main South was the 'farewell i30 tour' as we took the car out on one final drive and tank of fuel. After 179,000 km of combined ownership covering east coast Australia, we said farewell to the trusty Hoondai i30 “Harry”.

EC2525 leads a 3-car Xplorer set through Casula on the way north to Sydney. The train is SP32, morning CountryLink Xplorer service from Canberra to Sydney. The rear car of the train is EA2508, converted from CityRail Endeavour car LE2825 for the Broken Hill Xplorer service. This would be one of the last cars to be refurbished, and still retains it's Endeavour "plug door" behind the drivers compartment, unlike the rest of the Xplorer fleet.

XP2003 and XP2014 lead WT49 past Red Hill en route to Parkes.
Unlike previous years, the 2022 Elvis Express was combined with the normal Dubbo XPT service (WT27). This year the train operated to Orange along the normal WT27 timetable carrying both Dubbo XPT and Parkes-bound Elvis Express passengers. Beyond Orange, passengers for destinations towards Dubbo completed the remainder of the journey by road coach. Meanwhile, the XPT continued to Parkes as WT49. A similar arrangement was used for the return journey.
This contrasts with previous years where the Parkes bound Elvis Express was operated as a standalone train on a separate path, and the Dubbo XPT service would be replaced by an Xplorer.

The Xplorer and two Endeavour cars were being transferred from the workshops at Dandenong to Dynon to be placed back on their standard gauge bogies following refurbishment. This would be the last such transfer movement, as the entire of the Endeavour and Xplorer fleets have now been refurbished.
Almost caught me out, after losing some time on their trip from Cootamundra through to Moss Vale, train 3476 is swung over through the back way into the down refuge at Moss Vale, as Xplorer service SP36 catches up. BRM001, 602, 4532 and 4904 get underway again after a swift crew change before spending some time sitting in the refuge to let the 5 car Xplorer from Griffith and Canberra pass through.

NP44, the daily CountryLink Xplorer service from Moree to Sydney arrives into Gunnedah Station. Typically operated by a 2-car Xplorer train, these carriages will amalgamate with NP24 (the Armidale to Werris Creek Xplorer) to run through to Sydney as a six car train. Given that the end of the summer school holidays was drawing to a close, the train was quite full.
EA2504 is leading SP31 Canberra Xplorer service while the crew conduct safeworking duties at Bungendore Station. Until 2010, the line from Goulburn to Bungendore was using Electric Staff Safeworking, with Bungendore to Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan to Canberra using Ordinary Train Staff. This has since been replaced with Train Order working.

Unlike on a previous visit to Manildra, when I visited Gunnedah, both Manildra Group shunting locomotives were in operation. Due to the quick nature of this visit, we were unable to wait around to watch MM04 (pictured above) push back into the yard with the train of loaded flour hoppers.
Like at Manildra, shunting operations are paused to allow the passage of mainline traffic - in this case, both shunting units were idling with their respective trains to allow the passage of an empty coal train, then the Sydney-bound Xplorer, and finally a loaded coal train.
