Dai Hanzhi: 5000 Artists

Witte de With, Rotterdam 2014

Wang Xingwei is an artist who lives and works in Beijing. He was trained in figurative painting at Shenyang Normal University. Since the early 1990s Wang Xingwei has pioneered a painterly vision that links Chinese contemporary art to its Western referents, socialist realist precedents, and immediate cultural context through a universe of recurring characters rendered in seemingly infinite subtle variations of style and composition. Wang is reflexive about the visual language he has inherited, but relentlessly inventive in its deployment. An artist known for its quirky sensibility and sharp wit, Wang freely appropriates style and content from different traditions, employing them in highly creative and dramatic scenarios.

This is a short film based on the events of Edward Joseph Snowden, a former CIA and NSA employee who leaked a top secret mass surveillance programme from the US and UK.

We have never met or been in contact with Edward Joseph Snowden.

We are a band of independent and amateur filmmakers in Hong Kong who were both excited and puzzled as to why Snowden chose to come to Hong Kong. While nearly every media outlet wanted to get their hands on him, we decided to produce a short fictional video to depict his experience in HK, and how it would have affected certain parties: Namely, the CIA contingent based in HK who would be tasked to find Snowden. The Hong Kong Police who would be stuck in between the US and China. And the journalists who want to get the scoop.

The idea was hatched two days after he revealed his identity, and principal filming began on June 20th.

We were also filming on the same day (23rd) when we learned Snowden had left the city. Therefore we ramped up production efforts and published our short film 'Verax' on the 25th. 'Verax' was the alias Snowden used when contacting journalists via encrypted chat services, and means truth-teller in Latin.

I myself loved the idea of having Snowden here and the media frenzy it created. I really wanted to make a film based on such real-life news events, especially as it continues to develop. I also wanted to put something out there that is contrary and alternative to what we see in the mainstream media. With the technology we have today, filmmakers can really produce work at ridiculous speed. This project really tested our mettle especially when most of us had day jobs.

I myself highly respect Snowden for doing what he did, and the immense dangers and hardship he put himself through. I wouldn't call him a hero or a traitor (especially since I'm not American) just yet as his story is still continuing. Last update I heard here was that he did not board his supposed flight to Cuba and therefore is likely still in Russia. I was dismayed by his departure - not only because we were making this film - but because he seemed to have faith in our rule of law and I also wanted to see how our HK government would continue to fare due to all this pressure from the US.

To reiterate, we made this for fun and for the love of filmmaking. We had no commercial or political motives.

Incidents(1996/7) were exhibited for the first time by Harald Szeemann at the Lyon Biennial 1997.

1997 Lyon Biennial L'autre (the Other)

Originating in 1991, the city of Lyon's Musee d'art Contemporain co-directors, Thierry Raspail and Thierry Prat, has hosted a biennial art exhibition, which generally has garnered little attention to international audiences. Each biennial has a specific theme and guest curator who determines the components of the exhibition. The choice for the Fourth Biennial, in 1997, was Harald Szeemann. The co-directors chosen theme for the exhibition was derived from the post-structuralist term L'autre, the other. L'autre was held at L'Halle Tony Garnier in the outskirts of Lyon. The structure from the 1920s is an example of extraordinary engineering of the era. The large scale of the space made it suitable for showing large-scale works such as by Richard Serra or Serge Spitzer, which would otherwise be excluded from such exhibitions in conventional spaces.

Szeemann's choices were eclectic but consistently focused on the subject of contemporary artists' personal mythologies. Large-scale sculptures by artists as: Bruce Nauman, Louise Bourgeois, Joseph Beuys, Richard Serra, Chris Burden, Jessica Stockholder, Hanne Darboven, and Ute Schroder were viewed in relation to video installations by: Gary Hill, Mariko Mori, Zhang Peill, Paul McCarthy, and Igor and Svetlana Kopystiansky. There were "physical/ ephemeral" pieces by younger artists, such as Jason Rhoades and Richard Jackson, and the famous large-scale black rats by Katharina Fritsch, which were shown earlier at the Dia Center for the Arts in New York.

Szeemann included a historical section with bronze cast self-portraits of the eighteenth-century artist Frances Xavier Messerschmidt, an ancestral figure to contemporary performance art. Szeemann mounted the bronze heads in a circular arrangement, thereby asserting their relationship to closely placed works by the Austrian Actionists of the 1960s. Surrounding the Messerschmidts were photographs, drawings, and relics by artists as Rudolph Schwarzkogler, Hermann Nitsch, Otto Muhl, Gunther Brus, and Arnulf Rainer. Another portion of the "historical" section was an entry in the exhibition catalog by the French art historian and curator Jean Clair.

An apparent theme intended by Szeemann in L'Autre was to position artists at the end of modernism within the context of a "self-historifying mythos". The diversity of works chosen for the Fourth Biennial reflected the constant edge of what was modernism, also what is perceived at its boundaries.

This was painted in 2001, the year Beijing was awarded the 2008 Summer Olympics. The title came from the slogan of "New Beijing, Great Olympics" which was used for the bid. In this work, the injured students have been replaced by injured penguins, reflecting the scrubbing of history by the Chinese government.

Consisting of three panels, this work features reproductions of two iconic artworks that depict revolutionary leaders. On the left is Liu Chunhua's Chairman Mao en route to Anyuan (1967), the most reproduced image during the Cultural Revolution. On the right is The Death of Marat, painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1793 during the French Revolution. The red canvas with yellow text in the centre explains the paintings' sources and changes the artist has made to the originals. Using image processing software, Wang adjusted the scales of the artworks to fit the dimensions of the canvases on which he reproduced them. By altering classic representations of the Chinese and French revolutions, the painting reminds us of how we idolise historical images.

This oil painting consists of three connected canvases. At left is an expanded portrayal of Liu Chunhua’s Chairman Mao Goes to Anyuan (1957), depicting a young Mao Zedong in a Chinese gown against a mountainous landscape. A compressed and monochromatic reproduction of Jacques-Louis David’s The Death of Marat (1793), which portrays the murdered journalist and French revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat in his bath, is presented at right. The middle red canvas with yellow text explains the paintings’ sources and their transformations. Wang Xingwei painted this work early in his career. He is known for appropriating motifs from Chinese and Western art history and creating versions of the same subject with different compositions. Here, Wang combines an image that was widely distributed during the Cultural Revolution in China (1966–1976) and a well-known painting from the French Revolution (1789–1799). The size and colour distortions suggest the emphasis on different histories of revolution in Chinese society. The work recalls another of Wang’s oil paintings, The Oriental Way: The Road to Anyuan (1995), which also references Liu’s 1957 work but features a rear view of the artist in place of Mao.

In 2003, Wang Xingwei began to paint on building materials with curved and uneven surfaces. Sea is a copy of Autumn Sea (1867) by French realist painter Gustave Courbet. Wang Xingwei exploits the undulating surface of a corrugated board to echo the waves and clouds in the image, giving the flat painting a three- dimensional quality. The combination of refined techniques and inexpensive material creates a parody of a classic image.

A man in a yellow shirt resembling Wang gets down on one knee to peep into Étant donné (1946-1966), the final work of the pioneering conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp. The sawdust and the tools scattered on the ground suggest that Wang has vandalised Duchamp's work. Next to the man stand the artists Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys dressed as police to guard Duchamp's legacy. Just as St. Thomas-the religious figure mentioned in the work's title- doubted Jesus' resurrection, Wang remains devoted to expressing scepticism about the conceptual ideas that dominated China's art scene.
