The Grand Ole Opry is a weekly country music stage concert in Nashville, Tennessee that has presented the biggest stars of that genre. Founded on November 28, 1925 by George D. Hay as a one-hour radio "barn dance" on WSM, and currently owned and operated by Ryman Hospitality Properties, Inc., it is also among the longest-running radio broadcasts in history. Dedicated to honoring country music and its history, the Opry showcases a mix of legends and contemporary chart-toppers performing country, bluegrass, folk, gospel, and comedic performances and skits. Considered an American icon, it attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world and millions of radio and Internet listeners.

The Opry's current primary slogan is "The Show that Made Country Music Famous". Other slogans include "Home of American Music" and "Country’s Most Famous Stage".

The Opry moved to a permanent home, the Ryman Auditorium, in 1943. As it developed in importance, so did the city of Nashville, which became America's "country music capital". The Grand Ole Opry holds such significance in Nashville that its name is included on the city/county line signs on all major roadways. The signs read "Music City | Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County | Home of the Grand Ole Opry".

Membership in the Opry remains one of country music's crowning achievements. Since 1974, the show has been broadcast from the Grand Ole Opry House east of downtown Nashville and performances have been sporadically televised in addition to the radio programs.

52 Week photo project

Challenge was to leave a little white space. Since I rarely do, it was a fun change.

I thrifted the Verde Cinderella set and the 8X8 Desert Dawn dish, and the turquoise and Friendship were from Pyrex Junkie in a trade. Thanks!

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Clouds

First of all, let me thank gfpeck for coming up with this assignment idea. I would have to say that prior to Saturday morning when it had either been completely overcasted or completely clear skys that I was not very happy with this assignment.

Saturday morning, however, turned into one of my best picture taking learning experiences ever. Bare with me, this is going to get a little wordy, but hpping you can relate to it as a fellow picture taker.

It all started at 6:30am. Went out in hopes of catching some interesting clouds only to see blankets of cloud overhead. Not hopeful. At around 6:45am, I noticed that the wind picked up to around 30 miles per hour which started to stir the clouds a bit. At the same time, I could tell that the sunrise was trying to fight it's way through the think sheets of clouds. Before I knew it, the wind started to break up the clouds significantly causing the scenery to change all around me. On the one hand, the sun rays were beaming through the clouds, on the other hand, the clouds behind and to the side of me were receiving pinkish light from the sunrise. We had our share of dark clouds too. It became a cloud wonderland.

I had my tripod set up (for a change) and found myself turning everywhich way to catch a picture. I'm learning about RAW images and exposure, so with every scene, I experimented with different shutter speeds and just thoroughly enjoyed how the results differed with every exposure change. With the wind blowing hard, the scenery, lighting, and colors, even changed between exposure adjustments. Nothing stayed still for me to shoot for more than a minute (crazy, but fun). In under 60 minutes, I got to watch the clouds dance between the sun and the light that it produced. Magnificent.

I couldn't believe I ended up snapping over 250 shots in raw (luckily I have a large memory card). I struggled with which 2 pictures to submit. There were other pictures that I took which were more focused on light. I ended up submitting to AAW pictures that emphsized the clouds. I've posted a mosaic of those pictures to share here (if interested).

WIT: Converted from RAW to Jpeg with light contrast adjustments.

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Parallel Lines

In thinking about natural things (vs. structural things) that form parallel lines, I had vegetables on my mind.

WIT: Went to the produce isle and scoped out vegetables that formed nice lines. I chose green onions for its rich green colors and the way they are typically stacked. Of all the shots that I took, this one right after the water mister sprayed was my favorite. No flash, manually set Aperture to get good focus under Macro per advice from my friends in this pool last week... :)

Active Assignment Weekly: April 9-16: Body Language

The communication of thoughts and emotions are often accomplished through written and spoken words. But there is also a silent and often effective means of communication that comes through just by body posture, gestures, facial expressions, and eye movements. According to the all-knowing wikipedia, 60-70% of communicative meaning comes through nonverbal behavior. Let's see what your subjects are trying to say.

Restriction: No sign language

Dare: The person's face cannot be in the shot.
