2017 Weekly Alphabet Challenge

Week 17: Q is for Quintet

Travelled north over the weekend to visit a friend. It was a 5-road trip, one way. A bit tiring but well worth it, the change of scenery was also a big welcome.

Active Assignment Weekly: Stairs.

The assignment is to capture stairs.

Dare: try to capture feet as they travel on the stairs.

Don't: no folding stairs

Most residential buildings here (Lusaka, Zambia) are single-storey, so no stairs there. But there are lots of unfinished commercial buildings like this one that are started and then grind to a halt. I wondered why the second step was so large?

WIT: asking the guard to let me take the picture, persuading the foreman a few minutes later that I had permission from the guard; straight from camera, no crop or PP

Active Assignment Weekly:

Assignment:

Capture some good old trash and then turn it into photographic treasure.

In other words, capture something trashy that looks really cool after you've photographed and processed it. (Joe, this does not mean a picture of yourself.)

Dare: Trash you find somewhere other than in your own garbage or house.

Restriction: Garbage cans, recycling bins, or other receptacles cannot appear in the photo.

I know that Vik Muniz would be a good source of inspiration. www.wastelandmovie.com/gallery.html

Here's a good group: www.flickr.com/groups/trash-art/

WIT: Way more processed than I would usually do, BUT - I felt that's what Paul was driving at. We were working in the yard today and I found this crushed water bottle in the sidewalk. We live on a main thoroughfare and we are constantly picking up garbage that people throw out of their cars. Anyway, my first assignment with my new K-5!: F/8.0, 1/200 sec, ISO 800 (cloudy day). RAW conversion and CS4 adjustment to curves for contrast, upped the vibrance, solarization down to 69%, added 40% cooling filter, increased the brightness, added 16% posterization, noise reduction, resize, final sharpening.

Dearest Maddy,

We're a day late taking your weekly picture this week, because mama's month-long cold turned into something nastier and picture-taking just wasn't in the cards yesterday. Sorry about that!

You got your second tooth this week - your top right tooth, right above your first one. We didn't notice it right away, because we'd been so focused on that bottom left one that's looked like it's about to break through for awhile now, but it actually looks like you're gonna get your top left one before the bottom one! You are such an unhappy camper about teething, and it's really made these last several weeks very difficult. We wish we could make it easier for you, sweet girl - it's terribly unfair that babies have to deal with teeth coming in when they're so orally fixated (and have so much of their cortex devoted to neural representation of the mouth!). And now mama's getting too nerdy, so on to other things...

You're still walking, but you won't let us take a video of you doing it, so everyone who's not seen it in person will just have to take our word for it. You're also really talkative lately, and have started pointing to things and waiting for us to tell you about them. You seem to think just about everything is called "baby" right now, and we like to joke that the way you walk around saying "baby baby baby", you should be in boy band :)

In this picture, you're doing one of your new favorite things (which mama taught you!) - flipping your lips up and down with your fingers to make funny noises! It's a great way to cheer you up when you're grumpy!

Here's hoping the next few teeth aren't as hard on you as these first few, and that we all get a bit more happy sleep together as a family. We love you, Madrigal!

Since we spent the first week of Olive’s summer holiday on vacation at Mimi and Gaigai’s, this week was the first week of summer in our house. Going into it, I knew I had to have a plan for each day, even if that plan was only a craft or activity I knew for certain we’d do. There are so many activity options that I get easily overwhelmed and stagnated without a plan.

I’d say the week was a success! We both had a lot of fun and it was a good start to a fun summer.

Monday: Gymboree and swimming at a friend’s house

Tuesday: Errands and then lunch at Smash Burger with our playgroup

Wednesday: Park with a friend and Rita’s Italian Ice after. Swim lesson at night

Thursday: Art class at Small Hands Big Art and a trip to a shopping center to play on their splashpad

Friday: A play at ImagineOn and Taste of Charlotte

A few weeks ago, Ryan, Olive and I sat down and wrote a summer bucket list. Some of the things on the list are big and might take up the whole day but some are just small rights of passages. We have 33 items on the list and we keep adding to it when we think of something or Olive brings up something she wants to do. We’ve already knocked a few things of the list, and some of them more that once, like making homemade popsicles.

Ryan, of course, has made a Trello board and is always adding and moving cards. We start soccer next week and we’ll be doing two weeks of summer camp, but it’s nice to have a list of activities for the days when we’re not sure what we’re doing. Already, the summer seems to be zooming by. July Fourth is less than a month away and it always feels like summer is over in a blink of an eye after that holiday.

When school starts in the fall, our days will be filled again. School three days a week and swim and dance lessons on the other two days. It’s hard to fit in a random playdate when everyone is so busy. While I want our weeks to be planned out, I also want to have plenty of room in our schedule this summer for spontaneous get-togethers and adventures. If Olive wants to spend the afternoon playing with her dollhouse and barn and train set, then we’ll rearrange plans to accommodate. If a friend asks us to join for a mid-afternoon frozen yogurt treat, I hope we can drop everything and go.

More than anything, I want Olive’s summer to be filled with swimming pools, adventures, mud and paint. I want her to have long evenings of running back and forth from the backyard to the house to set up picnics. I want long sessions of t-ball where she and Finn fight over who gets to the ball. I want books that spark her imagination. I want friends for her to explore and conspire with.

I want this to be her first great summer.
