The zig-zag webbing has an unknown function, but is used for something as it isn't sticky enough to catch prey. It is much reduced, even eliminated, when the spider is extremely hungry. Every evening they eat the web and weave a new one in the morning.

Here is another photo of caterpillars of a Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) butterfly on a web-shrouded stem of Climbing Penstemon aka Heart-leaved Keckiella (Keckiella cordifolia) in the Plantaginaceae plant family. You can see a few of the caterpillars along the bottom edge of the web. These caterpillars are web-spinners, and they eat the leaves as they cover them. They spin their creepy webs on the host plants in the summer. Then they form tough skins and drop to the forest floor to over-winter. Finally they emerge, eat and get fat, and pupate into adults next year. It's a strange cycle, but it works for them. Tents now mean butterflies next year. It's actually kind of late in the season to be finding them on this shrub, as most of the caterpillars on other shrubs in the woods have already dropped to the ground. Timbers glued with PVA, once set the webbing is removed. Cutting with light preesure and the very tip of the stanley blade seemed most effective, with little over cut into the underlay
This is webbing on a leaf of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia, Fagaceae) in the woods, but I don't think it's the work of a spider. I believe it's the same little caterpillar (Lepidoptera) that I show in this photo - at least they both skeletonize the leaf in the same way, like a waffle. (Look under that thick white webbing to the left of center.) Here is spider webbing on a dead-looking branch of native Prickly-Phlox (Leptodactylon californicum, Polemoniaceae). Look again - the branch has some green buds for the new rain year, compare this photo of a plant before and after greening up. I'm not sure, but this might be "cribellate" webbing which is fuzzy and lacks any kind of sticky stuff, see this photo for another example that runs between whorls of flowers instead of leaves. Maybe this is the work of a cribellate species of Mesh Web Weaver in the family Dictynidae? Happy Web Webnesday! (San Marcos Pass, 6 November 2018)
This is a nest with webbing on a new flower stalk of Canyon Lupine aka Broadleaf Lupine (Lupinus latifolius, Fabaceae) in the woods a couple of days ago. I'm sure it's a caterpillar nest -- I saw it move around in there! I already have my two photos for the Web Wednesday group, but Happy Web Webnesday anyway! (San Marcos Pass, 12 May 2025)
In this picture, I zoomed in on the spider itself just to take a look at him/her. However, I noticed that in the front section of the leaf, the spider also has used its spinnerets to make webbing so that it could pull this leaf together. So, in the end, it has, “in a sense” built a little house for itself to keep the morning dew off of it. Very Ingenious & Very Impressive!
This is fine spider webbing on prickly pear cactus leaves in the garden. Cactus leaves?? Yes, these cacti have little succulent bracts or scales that appear before the spines and fall away after a while, there's more info here. The flower buds have these little leafy bracts also. I didn't realize when I got this photo that it also shows the spider! Start at the center and look up and to the right, I'll make a note. The spider's size and the type of web suggest that it's a Mesh Web Weaver spider in the family Dictynidae, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Happy Web Webnesday! (San Marcos Pass, 25 May 2020)
A closeup of how the belt fastens. The belt is quite easy for Fuller to fasten with the suitcase-type closure. I extended the webbing behind the belt buckle to eliminate the visual gaps around the narrow belt buckle assembly. I secured the end with hook-and-loop tape to keep it from flapping around.
