Today, to celebrate and thank the 4 million strong State of Decay 2 community, microsoft is releasing the Zedhunter Update to Xbox Game Pass subscribers and current players for free. Players will get this pack, which adds a wealth of new options and ways to enjoy the game, as part of a content update beginning today – it’s their way of saying thanks to the 4 million of you who have supported their game since launch.
At X018 last weekend, they provided some initial details for the Zedhunter Update; and how it brings new weapons and gameplay items to your community; but now they’re ready to give you a deeper dive into the Zedhunter Update’s additions. The Zedhunter Update integrates into your main community game and adds an iconic zombie-slaying weapon: crossbows, with eight new types now available! This is big, as crossbows are silent and powerful weapons – for example, scoped crossbows can more easily score headshots without drawing any attention or aggression from other zombies nearby.
Crossbow bolts can also be recovered afterwards (making them the eco-friendliest post-zombie apocalypse weapon around), and unlike traditional firearms, crossbows never jam or break. Because they’re powerful, efficient and silent, using them against a plague zombie gives you a higher chance of extracting a plague sample. The new crossbows might be your go-to weapon, but the Zedhunter Update also comes with three new melee and three new close-combat weapons for the more hands-on and stealthier survivor – giving you plenty of swords and knives to fight enemies with.
Expect even more customization options in the Zedhunter Update; the content update will include the ability to reset a survivor’s core skill specializations. If you ever wanted to switch your Cardio from Marathon to Backpacking you can read a new training manual and then change the specialization of that core skill – though be aware that the trade-off is that you’ll gain experience for this new skill slower than usual. Additionally, we’ve added six new “quirk skills” (like “Hygiene”) which provide new buffs to your survivors or to your community; you can find these skill books by tracking down the Skills Trader when that character visits your town.
One other gameplay addition we’re excited about is the addition of three new potent plague consumables. These can drastically enhance your survivor’s abilities; but we should mention that they’re basically poison to humans since they involve consuming a touch of plague infection. Maybe a little infection is worth it for the ability to see in the dark or sneak past zombies without drawing their attention; it’ll be up to you to decide.
To help introduce all this new content, they’ve added several missions to the game (and updated others). If you want to experience these new missions, keep an eye out for missions labelled “Mysterious;” you may happen across during your quest. Lastly, they’ve added three new achievements for you to attain; for as you play through the new Zedhunter Update additions.
As mentioned before, the Zedhunter Update will be free for all SOD2 players; Xbox Game Pass members, Standard Edition and Ultimate Edition owners – beginning today. A few years back my lifestyle and work changed, so I needed a car for work that could handle tons of miles, get great MPG, and never break.
I bought a 2014 Toyota Corolla S to put the work miles on and save my other car from the wear and tear of Florida’s highways. But I quickly found that I hated the sound of the factory audio system. I didn’t want to upgrade the expensive in-dash head unit since it also controlled other parts of the car and was used by the backup camera. So, I decided to upgrade the speakers to see if I could squeeze any more audio quality from this otherwise unremarkable Corolla.

Where I live in Florida, we have high humidity, hot weather, and lots of rain, so I went with a marine grade speaker by Polk Audio. They were not direct replacements for the speakers currently in the car, rather, I simply purchased drivers that fit the holes and matched the sizes of the stock speakers. I removed the old units with a metal drill bit to remove the rivets. I cut the wiring harnesses off and used blue butt connectors to wire in the new speakers. I then installed Dynamat sound-absorbing material behind the speakers and secured them with self-tapping screws, since the old rivet patterns were proprietary to Toyota speakers.
The hardest part was removing the door panels to get to the speakers in the front doors. Luckily, I didn’t have speakers in the rear doors, which would have made for twice as much work. I watched YouTube videos to learn how to remove the door panels and rear trunk cover. The trunk speakers were easy to get to but difficult to install and wire in. I didn’t touch the tweeters in the upper front doors because I couldn’t find products that matched the Polk speakers I was installing.

How did it affect the sound?
Midrange and low frequencies were much improved while highs remained about the same. The sound felt much more solid and less airy than the stock setup. The improved midrange made the biggest impact. Music now feels more alive and not just like a background noise in the car, it was better but still not great. Lows were improved, but not as much as if I’d added a subwoofer.

I had expected a bit more from the upgrade with the speakers and Dynamat, but really the music just wasn’t there. I am not saying the stock speakers were in any way good, but the improvement was marginal at best. For as much as I drive though, it was a small improvement for a small investment at best, which is the only positive to this upgrade project.
Was it worth it?
It was a fun project, but given the cost in time and money, it was not worth doing. Unless you have a speaker that’s gone bad and you need to replace it, then it’s not really worth the effort to replace them with something better. You also need to upgrade the power amps and add a sub to hear a significant difference in sound quality. I would first suggest looking into cars that already have a premium audio system installed. I have owned Audis in the past with Bose systems that sounded great.
Car audio is quite the challenge to get right, after all we do spend a lot of time in our cars. I also don’t think better speakers would have helped here, the pre-amplification and amplification stage also needed an upgrade. It’s like installing a high-end cartridge on a low-end turntable, it’s better but not by much. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below!

After Jai Gangaajal last year, starring Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Jha is all set to begin his next directorial. The filmmaker who produced the successful Lipstick Under My Burkha (directed by Alankrita Shrivastava) recently, is currently working on two scripts – both sequels of his earlier films. One of them may have Katrina Kaif and the other script is being written for Priyanka Chopra.
Says a trade source, “Prakash Jha is very happy about the critical and commercial success of Lipstick Under My Burkha and now he is ready to start work on his next. Last week he registered two titles – Raajneeti 2 which is a sequel to Raajneeti (2010), and was co-written, directed and produced by him and the other is Jai Gangaajal 2, a sequel to Jai Gangaajal (2016), starring Priyanka Chopra and himself and directed by him. While Raajneeti, a political thriller film, starring Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar and Katrina Kaif was a big hit, Jai Gangaajal had done average business and broken even.”
The source adds that the filmmaker is excited about the two scripts and asked his team of writers to brainstorm and work out the story and concept. “He will begin whichever story gets ready first. Buzz is Katrina Kaif may be a part of the sequel. In Raajneeti, she had starred in a pivotal role. Prakash Jha plans to introduce a new set of actors as most of the characters in his first film are dead. As of now only Nana may be a part of it but it all depends on how the story shapes out. Prakash has always expressed interest in revisiting Raajneeti as he finds the politics in the country fascinating. The writers are still brainstorming on whether it will be from where they left the last story (Ranbir leaves for USA) or if it’ll be a new one.”
Prakash Jha’s creative team is also working on Jai Gangaajal 2. The source adds, “It’s unlikely that Ajay Devgn will come again in the sequel as SP Amit Kumar as he has many films lined up for next year. Priyanka may reprise her role again as IPS Abha Mathur so now it remains to be seen whether it is Priyanka or Katrina in Prakash Jha’s next.”
Raajneeti remains one of Jha’s most successful films till date. Made on a budget of Rs.60 crore (approx), the film had done a worldwide BO business of Rs. 143 crore (approx). Filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Producer Arjun N. Kapoor, the makers of Fanney Khan have rubbished the rumours of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan being upset over the casting of R Madhavan opposite her. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, in a statement, said, “It is quite unfortunate that such false and baseless stories are created to grab attention. There is zero truth to that, we are all a team and Fanney Khan is a dear project to the whole team.”
Arjun N. Kapoor of KriArj Entertainment added: “There are some stories doing the rounds about disagreement in casting for the film. We want to put the record straight and deny any such so called competition or discord amongst the makers.” He said the cast, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, are “deep into prep for their roles and as thorough professionals do not interfere in process of casting for other roles”. It’s a great story and we are all very excited to showcase it to the world,” he said.
Earlier, a news portal had reported that for the last couple of weeks the producers of the film have been locked in a bitter struggle to find the right hero opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. It said that there was a choice between R Madhavan and RajKummar Rao with Aishwarya opting for Rajkummar Rao with Mehra insisting on Madhavan. “The discussions kept going on till the solution was finally cracked late on Wednesday afternoon – and the answer was Madhavan. Needless to say, it’s a choice which has not made Aishwarya very happy but she’s also a professional so she will have to grin and bear it,” the portal had said.

SIM Lian plans to develop a condo with more than 2,000 units on the Tampines Court site which has been awarded to it for S$970 million. At S$970 million, this is the secondlargest collective sale in dollar quantum after Farrer Court, which went for S$1.3388 billion back in 2007. The yeartodate tally is the best showing since 2007, when S$11.52 billion of collective sales were done. JLL’s figures cover collective sales across all property sectors. Huttons Asia brokered the collective sale of Tampines Court, which is near Simei MRT Station. The tender closed on Aug 15 and was awarded on Tuesday night.
The property agency’s head of investment sales, Terence Lian, estimates that the S$970 million price translates to S$676 per square foot per plot ratio inclusive of an estimated S$359 million that Sim Lian will have to pay to the state for differential premium and lease upgrading premium for topping up the site’s lease to 99 years from the current balance lease term of 69 years.
The differential premium is payable for enhancing the intensity of the site to a gross plot ratio of 2.8. The S$970 million price achieved for Tampines Court exceeds the reserve price of S$952 million in the collective sale agreement inked by the majority owners of the privatised Housing and Urban Development Company estate. Owners controlling about 83 per cent of Tampines Court’s share value and strata area have agreed to the sale so far.
The development comprises 560 units with sizes of between 1,658 sq ft and 1,733 sq ft across 14 blocks. Owners will receive sums ranging from S$1.71 million to S$1.75 million per unit. Tampines Court is on a 702,164sqft sprawling site. Based on the site’s 2.8 plot ratio under the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Master Plan 2014, the site can accommodate a maximum gross floor area of nearly 1.97 million sq ft. Ken Kuik, managing director of Sim Lian Holdings, said Tampines, a soughtafter mature estate, is set to become more exciting with the expansion of Changi Airport.
“This, combined with the fact that new MRT stations are coming up in the Tampines area, will attract more residential property buyers as well as enhance the investment proposition for the area,” he added. The group is making the acquisition through Sim Lian , a joint venture between Sim Lian Development and Sim Lian Land. The group will also handle the project’s construction. “We’re looking at a 12storey project with easily over 2,000 units, ranging from onebedders to four or even fivebedders,” said Mr Kuik.
The group does not have any undeveloped residential land bank in Singapore. It has developed a range of housing projects in Tampines The Premiere and Centrale 8 DBSS projects for the Housing & Development Board, The Tampines Trilliant executive condo development and Waterview, a private condo. A market watcher estimated that after factoring in an anticipated hike in DC rates come Sept 1, 2017 and other costs, Sim Lian’s breakeven cost could be around S$1,200 psf. The collective sale will be subject to approval by the Strata Titles Board and if necessary the High Court unless unanimous approval from owners is obtained.
The property and construction group will have to finish developing the new project on the site and selling all of its units within five years from the collective sale order granted by the STB or the court as part of the conditions for upfront remission of the 15 per cent additional buyer’s stamp duty on the land price. This is the third attempt at a collective sale at Tampines Court. The maiden effort for S$405 million was dismissed by the STB in 2008. A second attempt in 2011 failed to garner the required consent level from owners, according to earlier articles.

From endangered orcas, to healthy salmon populations that feed them, to the food on our tables, we all depend on having a reliable supply of water in streams, aquifers, and flowing from our taps. The pressures on our local water supply are numerous. Climate change is reducing the snowpack that feeds rivers in the summer, while simultaneously increasing demand for agricultural irrigation as summers get hotter and drier. Our region’s growing population adds the need for more residential water.
To learn more about what our community thinks about local water supply issues, impacts, and potential solutions, the Clean Water Team at RE Sources conducted a community questionnaire, “Better Understanding Whatcom Water Use”, during spring and summer 2018.
We’ve been busy diving into the results, reading through the thoughtful comments, and having follow-up conversations to learn more about the wide range of perspectives and experiences people shared. We’ve also had some one-on-one conversations with local farmers and gardeners, adding valuable insight to our water challenges and helping expand the list of potential solutions.
While continue to go over the information gleaned from 654 community members, we wanted to share a few of the main takeaways:
Many people in rural Whatcom County are already experiencing water shortages, with wells running dry in the late summer. These are our friends and neighbors, and for them (as well as the salmon and the cultures that depend on them), this is not a problem of the future — it is the current reality.
86% of respondents said they believe water conservation is an important issue and support the implementation of water conservation measures on a community level.
87% have tried reducing their personal water use at some point. Two-thirds of those reported doing so because they were concerned about our future water supply.
Respondents offered numerous creative, thoughtful ideas and strategies that can help us improve the health of our streams and safeguard an equitable water supply for all.
In alignment with the expressed community interest in water conservation as an approach, we recently worked with the Environmental Caucus (which represents environmental interests on the committee tasked with restoring streamflows to the Nooksack watershed) and rural residents to ask the Whatcom County Council to set aside funds to start a County-wide Water Conservation Program for residential water users. The council agreed in early December, and we look forward to working with staff in 2019 to make this program successful.

With more than 30 years’ experience in the residential and commercial water treatment space, Mark Nelson is a Class 1 Drinking-Water Operator and a CBWA (Canadian Bottled Water Association) Certified Plant Operator. As founder and president of Nelson Water in Ottawa, Mark focuses on dealing with challenging water treatment system designs for problem water. He also heads the largest water bottling plant in the city of Ottawa with a delivery network throughout the Valley.
During colder winter months, some people experience drier skin conditions that leave them feeling itchy and uncomfortable. For others, with eczema and other skin conditions, this is a year round experience. Approximately 17% of Canadians suffer from atopic dermatitis otherwise known as eczema that is typically treated with topically applied hormone creams. In extreme cases, this can lead to skin cracking, inflammation, and rashes, that some sufferers have described as 24/7 chickenpox. Let’s take a closer look at this skin condition and explore whether using softer water could help.
Triggered Eczema Flare Ups
Although eczema is an ongoing condition with a recurrence of skin rashes, crusting and even open sores in extreme cases, it’s often flare ups that cause the most misery. There are a number of different triggers that can cause eczema to become more virulent than usual, here are some typical examples: hard water, certain soaps or detergent, hotter conditions, close proximity to animals, dietary changes and stress. There are a variety of reasons why these triggers and the exact circumstances may vary between different eczema sufferers. In this article, we will specifically be looking at the relationship between eczema flare ups and the use of hard water in the home.
A Connection Between Hard Water and Eczema?
It has been suggested in some circles that bathing and washing clothes in hard water could aggravate eczema conditions. This could cause extensive skin flare ups leading to a worsening of the condition. Hard water has a higher than normal mineral content, primarily calcium, iron, and magnesium. One of the most common properties of these minerals is the effect that they can have on skin. When these minerals dry on the skin after showering or bathing, they will harden and leave the skin feeling dry and itchy.
Known Hard Water Properties
When hard water is used for showering and bathing, it can be hard to get the soap to form suds. Up to 70% more soap will be needed and rinsing it from the surface of the skin can be more difficult. These longer than necessary periods of soap and water contact could undoubtedly exacerbate an existing skin condition.
There are also other effects in other aspects of our lives where hard water could present a real problem for those with eczema and other skin conditions. Washing clothes in hard water will leave these same minerals and soap deposits on the surfaces of clothes and bedding. When wearing these clothes, sleeping on bedding and drying with towels, you will effectively be rubbing these irritants on your sensitive skin.
Is Eczema More Common in Hard Water Areas?
A study carried out by Skinsmatter.com in England, found that children living in hard water areas are 50% more likely to have eczema compared to those living in areas with softer water. Some similar research has also been carried out in Japan and Spain where it was found that areas supplied with hard water have a higher incidence of eczema. Although more research is needed, it seems to be the case that hard water can lead to eczema and softened water could provide much needed relief.

The Cleveland Water system is designed with numerous layers of protection to help ensure only clean, safe drinking water reaches your tap. These advantages start with the location of where we draw water in from Lake Erie, extend to our four treatment plants, and continue throughout our delivery system.
All four of our water intakes are located far offshore and pull in water from far below the surface of Lake Erie. Deeper water is less impacted by pollution and harmful algal blooms (HABs) which, if present, are usually only in the surface layer of water. Since testing began in 2010, we have never detected cyanobacteria (more commonly called blue-green algae) toxins in lake water coming into any of our plants.
Our water quality and treatment experts track many parameters of Lake Erie’s water quality from monitoring buoys that transmit real-time water quality data. We also monitor data from sensors in our intake tunnels, NASA satellite imagery, and from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (NOAA GLERL). We track all this data in real time to know what, if any, issues require adjustments in the water treatment process.
Our water treatment process has four lines of defense to remove cyanobacteria and the harmful toxins it can produce from the water. They include adding powdered activated carbon to absorb toxins; removing cyanobacteria in the coagulation and sedimentation process; filtering cyanobacteria from the water; and neutralizing toxins through chlorination. Each one of these four processes is considered an effective barrier at removing cyanobacteria and its toxins from water during the treatment process. Cleveland Water maintains all four processes at each of our plants as part of our normal water treatment process.
Having four independent water treatment plants and an interconnected distribution system are additional advantages of Cleveland Water. If one of our monitoring systems were to indicate a raw water issue that could pose treatment challenges, we can take that treatment plant offline and still pump potable water anywhere within our 640 square mile service area.

You think you know the Escort business? Many of you wrongly think that it is an easy job, where money is earned quickly, effortlessly and that all women who sell their bodies choose this path because they have no other alternative.
Well, let me tell you you’re wrong!

Many of them spend a lot of time and money maintaining their body shape. In their daily work, the “girls of joy” do both physical and emotional work. They know how to listen to their clients’ confessions and make sure to please them, and have them get what they want.
2- Escorts spread diseases and infections
It is precisely because their body is their working tool that they cannot afford to put it in danger. Escorts pay twice as much attention to their health as women on average. A decent escort only offers safe intercourse. She also visits the gynecologist 2 to 4 times a year and regularly carries out screening tests. Her health is of paramount importance: if she is not in good shape, she cannot pay the bills and provide for herself and her family. Furthermore, neglecting her health would put her clients and reputation at risk. It would cost her her job.
3- Only weird people, losers and desperate men will see the Escorts
You would be surprised by the diversity of people who sees Escorts. Middle-aged couples who want to stimulate their love and sex lives, young soldiers who like to relax in good company during their service, lawyers, doctors, disabled men who want special relationships with someone… The work of Escort girls sometimes has a more therapeutic component but everything is always done with respect for the other. Debutant director Adir will direct Anandwa, a tribute to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s cult film Anand (1971), starring Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. Originally while Saqib Saleem was to do the film, later the film went to Rajkummar Rao for Rajesh Khanna’s role. Now we have heard that Adir has been talking to Jackky Bhagnani and apparently Rajkummar Rao had no knowledge about it.
Says a source, “Adir had approached Rajkummar when talks with Saqib Saleem fell through. Raj had loved the role and was keen to do the film. It’s a performance-oriented role and while Anandwa is not a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand, it has been inspired by it, especially about the friendship between two men. Rajkummar and Adir were scouting for a film studio to produce the film when Rajkummar heard that Adir had approached Jackky for Rajesh Khanna’s role without his knowledge and was going ahead with it. This has deeply upset Rajkummar and he has shared his angst with some close friends of his in the trade who have been talking about it. Usually when another actor does a project which has been offered to someone else, on ethical grounds, he/she is supposed to check with the former actor if it is okay before accepting the project. In this case neither Adir nor Jackky has apparently told Rajkummar about the fact that they were in talks for Anandwa. Rajkummar Rao heard it from some producers whom he was in talks with to produce the film and it came as a big shock to him.”
Jackky Bhagnani says, “I had no clue that Rajkummar Rao was earlier doing the role. Nothing is finalized. Yes, I am in talks with the director for acting in the film. If I do the film I won’t be producing it. I have made a conscious decision not to act in my home productions.”
Anand is about the deep friendship between Bhaskar (Amitabh Bachchan), a doctor and cancer specialist and Anand (Rajesh Khanna), who has lymphoma of the intestine. Despite knowing that he won’t live for more than six months, Anand maintains a cheerful and nonchalant demeanour and always tries to make everyone happy around him. Anand’s condition gradually deteriorates and he dies amongst his friends, changing Bhaskar’s life in more ways than one.

Efrain Cuessy’s Make-A-Wish was for Kaskade to attend, maybe even perform at his 18th birthday party. But Kaskade and his team did him one better — he went b2b with his longtime fan!
At just 17, Cuessy was diagnosed with stage-two Hodgkin’s lymphoma. When asked about a Make-A-Wish, there was only thing he wanted: to see Kaskade perform live. He shared his story and was completely shocked when he heard back. Cuessy went through rounds of chemotherapy, all the while keeping in touch with Kaskade’s team.
Then, on his 18th birthday, his wish became a reality.

I was born 18 years ago, and since the age of 12, I started listening to Ryan Raddon (a.k.a @kaskade). I heard the song “Atmosphere” and immediately got hooked on his music. I kept listening and listening, wanting to see him more and more every time. Back in August, I was diagnosed with cancer and was given a Make-A-Wish. This was it. I wanted to see Kaskade.
What happened on his 18th birthday was simply incredible…
I turned 18, and Kaskade was coming to my birthday party. I was planning on doing a little set before he went on, but as I was 3 songs in, Ryan walks in. First off, I was fan girling. Second off, he went up to me and asked if I wanted to go a little B2B with him… hold up there. Did Kaskade just ask me if I wanted to go B2B with him?! Of course I said yes, how could I not? The party went on. We danced our hearts out and had the time of our lives. It became a legendary night. One that I won’t forget, and one that I hope Ryan and everyone in attendance doesn’t.
What a dream come true. Happy belated to Cuessy and shoutout to Kaskade for being straight up amazing!

That seems to be a strange statement, coming from a painter himself, don’t you think? But that’s Roy Lichtenstein for you – the man who turned commercial hoardings and comic strips into high end art!
There are people who think of comic books and graphic novels as somehow ‘lower’ than more conventional literature, and Roy Lichtenstein’s paintings are a direct answer to them. Born in a regular middle-class family in America, Roy’s early life didn’t have any dramatic events to influence his art – it was the everyday life that did it. Much like Andy Warhol’s soup cans, Roy Lichtenstein’s initial work featured cartoon icons – Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse!
As his career progressed, the subjects of his work also changed, including characters from DC Comics and other popular works. He also re-worked masterpieces of by Cézanne, Mondrian and Picasso in his own style, giving it the distinct Lichtenstein mark. His art is characterized by dots, lines and shapes, and the finished work often resembles an enlarged version of a comic strip panel.
With October being Lichtenstein’s birthday month, we can’t think of a better opportunity to introduce this wonderful artist to kids. After all, which child wouldn’t be interested in a painter who turned comic strips into art? Well we certainly would like to learn more, and that’s why we’ve lined up these amazing Roy Lichtenstein Art Projects for Kids!

Bismo’s and Plom’s journey actually started before the 3D version, with the development of the flash game »Mercury Shift«. At the beginning, the two were simple mercury blobs whose charm captivated players despite their plain design. Our core mechanic, the »shift«, was already an integral part of the two characters even back then. When we sat down together to start the work on »Shift Happens«, again we had this picture of the shift as one of the crucial fundaments in our minds. We first thought that our two friends could be robots whose interchangeable mass could be displayed through a kind of energy core. We tried out a few designs, always looking for this special feeling that the 2D blobs already conveyed then. Finally, we realized that people loved the blobs, so they had to remain blobs. That very evening, the first piece of concept art for our final design was created.
The Design
For good character design, it’s important to be aware of certain basic conditions. The more guidelines you set, the easier it is to create a fitting design. The first and most important guideline for us was the already mentioned presentation of the shift, then the decision in favor of the blobs, and also the style of the game was crucial. We wanted to head into a simple, yet aesthetic-looking direction, so the same went for our characters. And we also thought of applying it to the basic principle of the game, too. Shift Happens is a game that’s mainly about having fun and sharing the same experience, and of course, we wanted this basic idea to be reflected in Bismo’s and Plom’s looks and personalities.
The same and yet completely different – elaborate details help distinguish Plom from Bismo.
We wanted to create fun characters who would be endearing and loveable at the same time, so that everyone would enjoy playing them to explore the world of Shift Happens.
The biggest challenge with regard to design was the fact that we had two different-looking characters whose skills were identical. Unique distinguishing features are the different mass and size, which either one of the characters can obtain. So, we had to make clear that they were two different individuals who kept their personality even when switching shapes. Nonetheless, we also wanted to bring across the characteristics of the different shapes.
In order to meet these requirements, we first based the design of Bismo and Plom on their 2D predecessors. Their ground mass was also to consist of mercury, but a lot more viscous and with clear structures. We worked with round, soft design elements to give them both a friendly appearance. Unlike the original blobs, Bismo and Plom were allowed to have colors. We made sure to work with flat and pure colors, both to correspond to the style and to emphasize their different character. For example, they both have different luminescent symbols on their body to add some variety. They kept the same number of eyes as the original blobs, with the exception that Bismo doesn’t have a single eye in the middle but a cross-shaped symbol instead of a second one.
Since we kept the style rather simple, it was important to have not only a significant number of design elements, but also expressive movements of the characters. A big part of their personality had to be expressed with the help of specific gestures. Therefore, the animations play an important role to differentiate between our two protagonists.
Challenge: the Shift
What turned out to be an even bigger challenge than the character development was the design and implementation of the shift itself. After all, it was the core mechanic of the game, so it had to look good and work well. At the beginning, we almost spent too much time racking our brains about it. We wanted to have a somewhat plausible and comprehendible explanation of how it was possible for our two friends to switch shapes.
We eventually fell back on the same means we already used for the 2D versions. Even though Bismo and Plom are colored red and blue, their ground mass still consists of mercury, and that’s what we still wanted to allow to see despite the new designs, and the perfect foundation for this was the shift. When our characters liquefy to be able to change their shape, they return to their original liquid mercury form. This is illustrated through silvery coloring and splashes being sloshed around or pulled close.
But possibly the biggest hurdle was the implementation. We worked with blend shapes to produce a smooth transition of the two shapes. Additionally, the characters had to be scaled and swapped. The shift had to work at any time, no matter what animation phase Bismo and Plom were in. We had to use a lot of tricks, but in the end managed to implement the shift as planned and were happy with the result.
The Result
We keep getting feedback about how loveable and funny our two protagonists are. We met the goal we had set ourselves with regard to the character design and also learned a lot on the way. While creating Bismo and Plom we realized how much design and animation can depend on each other.
It proved to be quite useful to have an idea of the gestures and technique of the animations we wanted to create from the get-go. We also learned that good design doesn’t necessarily have to be complex and detailed. It’s usually much more important to get the emotions and personality across.
Even if there were quite a few hurdles to take, at the end of the day we managed to create two loveable guys who are all in all very well received by the players.
