In 2011, I wrote a three part article on the Oppo BDP-93 entitled TVs? We Don’t Need no Stinking TVs – Third Generation Multi-channel Audio.

Now that the Oppo Digital players are no longer in production, how are you going to play multichannel SACD, DVD-A, multichannel FLAC files, and multichannel DSD files? How are you going to play stereo FLAC files and DSD files without a computer?

The answer came from Secrets own Jay Haider. He pointed to three solutions from Sony. The Sony BDPS6700 Blu-ray Player is the least expensive. The Sony BDPS6700 lists for $180 but is currently $90 at Wal-Mart. I just purchased it as a back up to my Oppo.

The Sony BDPS6700 is a tiny box and comes in at 2 pounds.

The other two Sony’s add 4K Blu-ray to the other functions.. If you need 4K, Sony makes the UDP-700 and UDP-800. The UDP-700 and UDP-800 list for $200 and $250 respectively. Discounts are much smaller.

Only the UDP-800 plays DVD-A. The UDP-800 is better built coming in at 9 pounds while the BDPS6700 is 2 pounds. The UDP-800 is a full sized unit and has a built-in power supply, while the BDPS6700 and UDP-800 use a 12V wall wart. If you need a 4K Blu-Ray player, the UDP-800 is clearly worth the $50 over the UDP-700.

Since the Sony BDPS6700 is two pounds, it moves when you push to close the disc draw. The BDPS6700 feet are almost not existent. It will scratch your expensive components if you do not put some protective material below it. If I were not doing my Jack Benny imitation, I would have purchased the UDP-800.

I tested no video functions at all on the BDPS6700. I have no idea of HDMI compatibility issues with expensive TVs. See the title of this article. It locked to my AVR in HDMI 1.1 without looking at the manual and I was thrilled. Multichannel SACDs were playing 10 minutes after I opened the box.

I had it playing FLAC files within an hour of opening the box, never touching a setup panel. Using my 2TB portable Seagate USB drive (I put all my download files on that drive) it played 96k sample / sec FLAC stereo files, 96k sample / sec FLAC multichannel files and 192k sample / sec FLAC stereo files. That function was introduced on the Oppo BDP-93. On the DSD side, it plays stereo or multichannel files and will play a Double-DSD (DSD128) stereo file. That function came later on the Oppo BDP-103. It also does .wav, mp3 and AAC. It does not support the exotic Quad-DSD (DSD256) or DXD. Below is a screen scrape from the Sony website.

It played my one Blu-ray. You can watch the orchestra on this disc. I do not like that because they focus on the oboe when I want to look at the trombones playing the harmony. I can look at anything I want to live. Note the name of the article. Opera fans will have a bigger stack of Blu-rays.

Audio Blu-ray works in stereo and multichannel. For CD and SACD, the TV can be off. For studio Blu-ray, the TV is only needed for setup. They are still producing classical SACDs and they get reviewed in multichannel in current editions of classical music review magazines (American Record Guide and Fanfare). Double CD/SACD issues are very rare now, if you want to purchase, for example, a BIS disc you will be purchasing an SACD.

The Sony BDPS6700 has no DVD-A support unfortunately. As mentioned above, the more expensive, better built, UDP-800 supports DVD-A. I have a number of DVD-A discs but I have the original Oppo DV-980H, which still works, as a backup unit to play DVD-A. The Oppo DV-980H was the first player to transmit SACD and DVD-A down HDMI. The DV-980H was a revolution in the simplification of a multichannel audio setup. If you have a significant number of DVD-A’s with no back up player, go with the Sony UDP-800.

I checked the Sony BDPS6700 for playback of DVD, DVD-R and CD-R and had no issues.

I did not check Wi Fi or if it can find music files off my computers using Ethernet.

It has no analog audio support at all. You need HDMI for multichannel and DSD. It will send DSD if your AVR supports it. If your AVR does not support DSD, the Sony BDPS6700 switches to LPCM transcode automatically.

You must have a TV with HDMI to see the control screen except for CD or SACD. If you want to hear an SACD in stereo or multichannel, you must have the player connected to a unit that decodes HDMI 1.1 audio. The Sony BDPS6700 has a Coax out but that is limited to 96k sample /sec LPCM. DSD data or its LPCM transcoded form cannot be legally transmitted of S/PDIF.

On the audio side with HDMI, the Sony BDPS6700 does what the Oppo did but the Oppo’s build quality is several orders of magnitude better. The Sony UDP-800 is better built that the Sony BDPS6700 but still is not built like an Oppo. Many used the Oppo’s analog outputs. That is gone now with no replacement.

With the Sony BDPS6700 in the equipment rack, a computer is not required. I navigate my USB drive from the TV menu created by the BDP6700. I have a 19 inch 720p TV but that is too large for an audio only system. You can get a 13 inch with HDMI but they cost a lot more than the 19 inch. I will likely replace the giant screen 19 inch at some point for the more sensible 13 inch so everything fits in the equipment rack.

Using the Coax out into a stereo audio component makes sense if you have audio equipment without HDMI and you want to banish a computer. You have instead introduced a TV which is much cheaper. DSD support even transcoded is lost with the Coax.

For those of you who want a stereo-only SACD player with analog out, be prepared to pay at least $2000. If that is your budget, get an AVR with good room correction and one of the Sony’s for less if you can tolerate a small TV in the equipment rack.

As far as I know, it is impossible to play multichannel files without using a computer and its USB output. You will not find a six channel DAC. Other solutions run to five figures using professional interconnections. SACD playback is impossible regardless of what you pay when using a computer.

I am thinking about getting another Sony BDPS6700 as another spare. It is built as you expect for a $90 A/V component. I cannot say how long it will last.

I love a good ball gown, takes me back to when I was a child and reading all the old Hollywood books that belonged to my mother. I enjoy the Cannes Film Festival for all the amazing gowns the ladies wear. They seem to be a little more adventurous than at other red carpet events. Here are a few of my favourites so far, of course I’m drawn to the more modest dresses as I’m older.

I didn’t really like the dresses at the Met Ball except for Anna Wintour wearing Chanel and Brooke Shields wearing Zac Posen.

The release woes just don’t seem to end for Haseena Parkar. The film, starring Shraddha Kapoor, and based on fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s deceased sister, was to originally release on July 14. But the film was postponed to September 22, to avoid a clash with the Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif biggie Jagga Jasoos. The statement issued by the producers claimed that they wanted to avoid a clash with Jagga Jasoos and wanted a better release date as a lot of hard work, research and thought have been put behind each and every scene of the movie.

Now reports have claimed that Haseena Parkar might not even release on September 22. Reportedly, the producer of the film, Furqan Khan, owes a lot of money to a lot of people and they are not allowing the film to release the film. This development has also affected Shraddha Kapoor. She has already begun prep for her next film which is the biopic of badminton champion Saina Nehwal. Reportedly, Shraddha signed Haseena Parkar because Furqan Khan is Shraddha Kapoor’s uncle Pradeep Sharma aka Tutu Sharma’s partner. She is now upset with Pradeep Sharma as well. Surprisingly, in the past, even Pradeep has faced trouble releasing two of his films – Anurag Kashyap’s directorial debut Paanch and Sudhir Mishra’s Tera Kya Hoga Johnny.

Haseena Parkar also stars Siddhanth Kapoor, real-life brother of Shraddha. Both are incidentally playing siblings in the film. The director of this film is Apoorva Lakhia.

2018 felt like a relatively light year for Kygo, who released major collaborations with Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, and U2 in 2017, as well as his Stargazing EP. That isn’t to say 2018 was without its notable releases, however. Kygo also released “Remind Me To Forget” with Miguel, “Born To Be Yours” with Imagine Dragons, and “Happy Now” with Sandro Cavazza.

Now, Kygo is teasing his first new music of 2019, and it comes conveniently on Valentine’s Day. Entitled “Think About You” and featuring Valerie Broussard, we expect this one to be a sultry and smooth love song, typical of Kygo’s core sound.

He posted a teaser on social media yesterday — but at just 14 seconds of wind howling and barely audible melodies, it’s not that much to go on. That being said, with less than 48 hours to go until we hear the whole thing, we’re not all that worried!

A Honda CR-V seating capacity lawsuit alleges 2017-2018 CR-Vs don't have 3-point seat belts in all seating positions, something that makes the marketing of a seating capacity of five blatantly false.

According to the lawsuit, Honda advertises the CR-V as having a seating capacity of five and equipped with 3-point seat belts at all seating positions. However, the rear seat belts are configured so that only two back seat passengers can properly buckle their seat belts at any given time.

This causes a safety danger as it prevents customers from safely seating five people in a CR-V at any given time.

Plaintiff Bill Schepler says he purchased a 2018 Honda CR-V in December 2017 because he has three grandchildren and wanted a vehicle with a seating capacity of five for him, his wife and their grandchildren.

The plaintiff says he soon realized the rear driver’s side seat belt buckle was “backward” and the rear driver’s side passenger could not buckle the seat belt without overlapping the middle passenger’s anchor buckle.

Schepler took his CR-V to the dealership in May 2018 for help with the problem and technicians photographed the buckle configuration and sent the picture to Honda.

In addition, technicians allegedly sent a message to Honda that said the CR-V cannot have three rear passengers in the back seat at the same time because the seat belts overlap and twist.

In the end, Honda didn't repair or correct the seat belt issues, leaving the plaintiff unable to safely transport back seat passengers.

Mr. Schepler isn't the only CR-V owner who has noticed the safety dangers of the configuration.

"The rear left and middle seat belts overlap. The vehicle is advertised as a 5 seater vehicle but cannot safely be used for 5 passengers, or with a car seat in either of those seats with a passenger in the other one.

"My brand new 2017 CRV touring appears to have the detachable anchor for the 2nd row center seat belt crossed with the 2nd row left seat belt buckle. This configuration causes the center belt and the left seat belt to cross one another and also makes it difficult for the left seat passenger to connect or disconnect their seat belt with the center passenger buckled in."

The owner went on to complain the seat belt situation doesn't allow the person sitting behind the driver to wear their seat belt when their child seat is buckled into the center because the buckle cannot be accessed.

"This is a huge safety concern as I travel frequently with my infant daughter, son, and son’s friend in the back seat. There have been multiple other complaints about this which can be googled. Something needs to be done here."

Honda CR-V owner's manuals for 2017-2018 models are allegedly false because both manuals claim that “[a]ll five seating positions are equipped with lap/shoulder seat belts with emergency locking retractors.”

In addition, the plaintiff claims the false advertising includes a brochure for the 2018 CR-V that claims the SUV is “[e]xcellence in every detail,” including “spacious seating for five.”

Honda CR-V rear seat belts are designed in such a way the rear driver’s side seat belt and rear passenger’s side seat belt are retractable to the side of the vehicle nearest the passenger’s shoulder. There is an “anchor buckle” to the middle passenger’s left where a small latch plate may be buckled. The passenger may then proceed to fasten the seat belt normally, inserting the large latch plate into the buckle to the passenger’s right.

But according to the CR-V lawsuit, the middle passenger’s anchor buckle is to the left of the rear driver’s side passenger’s buckle, making it impossible for the anchor buckle and rear driver’s side passenger’s buckle to be used at the same time without both of the seat belts overlapping or twisting.

The mysterious Karma Fields released his debut album NEW AGE | DARK AGE in 2016 to middling reviews, never garnering any bad press, nor any exceedingly praiseworthy reviews, either. This, despite collaborations with Cape Fear actress Juliette Lewis, Talib Kweli, and Kerli. Now, three years later, Karma Fields returns with his sophomore album BODY RUSH and it’s absolutely phenomenal.

Whereas the hits on NA/DA seemed to fall back on the talents of his collaborators, this new album does plenty on its own; and when the collaborators, who include Tove Lo and Little Boots, finally add their contributions, it only serves to accentuate the already stunning base material.

Spanning 14 tracks, BODY RUSH is a sultry, smooth, and energetic album that calls upon influences from James Blake, ZHU, and more. The result is a diverse and powerful album that plays on all the strengths of Karma Fields while continuing to push the boundaries of what that brand means. Only four tracks from the album were previously released as singles, leaving fans ten fresh and brilliant tracks to listen to for the first time.

Though it’s no concept album, each track flows seamlessly from one to the next, never missing a beat. There are also plenty of intricate, unique effects in many tracks that add a level of brilliance to the whole work. The nearly two-minute build on “An Underground System of Forgotten Machines” is the epitome of suspense and intrigue, and is easily one of the best tracks on the whole album.

One of my personal favorite tracks on the album is the acid breakbeat anthem “S > M > T (SUPER MEGA TOKYO).” Stylistically, it’s one of the more random tracks on the album. Quality wise, it’s one of the best pure electronic tracks I’ve heard all year.

There’s no doubt that, unfortunately, BODY RUSH will be overlooked by many as NEW AGE | DARK AGE was three years ago; hopefully, though, more people begin to take notice as this is definitely one of the finest albums of 2019 I’ve heard yet.

DO in H2O: How Low Dissolved Oxygen Creates a “Dead Zone” by Benjamin Gour

Each summer, pockets of water with low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) develop in areas of Lake Erie’s Central Basin, which stretches from Sandusky to Erie, PA.

Water that has less than 2 parts per million of DO is called hypoxic. Hypoxia is caused by various factors, including lake stratification, the depth of the Central Basin (which averages around 60 feet), and excessive runoff of nutrients into the lake (called eutrophication).

Stratification means that water volumes with different properties form layers that act as barriers to water mixing. A thick layer of warm water is on the top, scientifically called the epilimnion. A thin layer where water temperature rapidly changes is in the middle is called the thermocline. At the bottom is a layer of cold water, called the hypolimnion.

Stratification causes DO levels in the hypolimnion to decrease because:

Oxygen from the surface can no longer mix in with the cold bottom layer;

Oxygen is not being created through photosynthesis because the water is too deep for enough sunlight to reach plant life; and

The DO that is present is being used by aquatic organisms that live in the hypolimnion and by the decomposition process.

When water stratifies, it does so in pockets that grow, shrink, move, disappear and reappear based on weather patterns that move over the lake. If stratification lasts for an extended period of time, areas of the Central Basin can become hypoxic. These areas of low DO water at the bottom of the lake are referred to as the “dead zone.”

As every good angler knows, different species of fish prefer to swim in different temperatures of water. Different species of fish also prefer to swim in water with certain DO levels. If the amount of DO drops below a fish’s preference, the fish do not die as the name “dead zone” implies. But, the need for DO wins over temperature and habitat preferences, and as a result, the fish swim away to other areas of the lake. If the area of hypoxic water lasts long enough, some smaller and less mobile organisms can die off. But because fish swim away from low DO, “dead zones” rarely result in a fish kill in a water body as big as Lake Erie.

One way Cleveland Water monitors the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water is through sensors which are located on our buoys in Lake Erie as well as in our water intake tunnels. This allows us to know when stratification is occuring and to be better prepared for it.

The data and observations collected by Cleveland Water are being used to develop a Hypoxia Early Warning System in partnership with the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) and the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR). When finalized, the model will predict the movement of hypoxic water in the Great Lakes and provide drinking water treatment plant managers an early warning system for hypoxic waters that functions in a similar fashion to meteorological forecasts.

Every month another women’s magazine has an article about how you should “make your bedroom an oasis.” Or “keep the bedroom for sex.” And when I see this I have a difficult time stifling a giggle. Yes, of course we would all be better off if we kept our bedroom as a haven for sex. But that really is not a practical solution for most of us who don’t live in 12 room mansions. For most women I know the bedroom is the newest form of the multi-purpose room: watching TV, snuggling the kids, folding the laundry, keeping the dog, part-time lap-top retreat for work, and part time yoga studio. Who are we kidding? But I do think that people can and should create boundaries for the bedroom that allow you to convert it into a good place to have sex when you want to. Here are some things than can help do that and are pretty non-negotiable:

A lock on your door. Yes. You. I get that many people have the kids wander in at night and don’t make their beds off limit, but there has to be some level of security that allows you to relax when you are having sex and not have to wonder all the time if you will look up and see a small head peering down at you asking what you and daddy are doing.

A white noise machine. This can be a fan turned on in your bathroom or an actual white noise machine, but either way, you need something that allows you to relax and not have to whisper when you are having sex, especially with teenagers in the house. White noise machines are inexpensive and easy to find.

A small or diffuse light source. Most people have a bedside lamp or something that allows you to have sex without the overhead light making you feel like you are in a gym and without subjecting you to looking for each other in pitch blackness. It’s important because lighting really does have an impact on your mood.

A place to put the family pet outside of the bedroom. I am sorry. Having whining jealous pets, or a furry face coming between you and your lover is not a way to make sex more erotic. I can’t tell you how many people I have had to have “the talk” with. You need to get your pet out of your love life and that means getting your pet out of your bedroom! Believe me, they will love you anyhow.

An easy access sex towel, or something to put under you for those wet spots that invariably happen.

A private closet or drawer within easy reach to store lubricants, vibrators, sexy books or whatever other accoutrements you and your partner like. So this might mean putting a lock on your nightstand drawer or just keeping a locked box somewhere near the bed. It takes a little bit of planning but it really makes a big difference

You’d be amazed at how a little bit of management can make your bedroom into a place that’s more conducive to sex. And while that doesn’t solve a low libido problem, it can address the “I have trouble getting in the mood” problem.

Just a few days ago, we had reported that Shahid Kapoor will play the leading man in the next directorial of Shree Narayan Singh who recently directed Toilet – Ek Prem Katha. The actor, who is currently busy with a historical drama, is reportedly playing a lawyer in this forthcoming social drama.

Tentatively titled Roshni, the film aims at bringing forth the deep rooted money making business within power distribution companies which fools its customers by making them cough up humungous amounts as electricity bills. It is also being said that the title of the film has been zeroed in on ‘Roshni’ [light] because of its reference to electricity.

Shahid Kapoor, as a lawyer, decides to raise his voice against this unethical system. What starts off as a single man’s fight against these powerful companies soon becomes the nation’s concern as the citizens too stand in support of him. Interestingly, this will be the first time where the actor will essay the role of a lawyer and his role somehow reminds us of some similar power packed roles played by actors like Rajkummar Rao in Shahid, Arshad Warsi in Jolly LLB, Amitabh Bachchan in Pink and the recent Akshay Kumar in Jolly LLB 2 among others.

As for the casting details, we hear that the makers are on a lookout for the same and the leading lady is yet to be finalized. It seems that the female lead in the film too has a strong role, as she stands by Shahid’s side in his fight. Roshni is written by Rustom writer Vipul K Rawal.

On the other hand, Shahid Kapoor who recently celebrated the 1st birthday of his daughter Misha abroad will soon return to the sets of Padmavati to wrap up the last leg of the shoot schedule. The film has the actor playing the role of Raja Rawal Ratan Singh and is paired opposite Deepika Padukone who plays the titular role along with Ranveer Singh playing the antagonist. The film is scheduled to release in November this year after which the actor will start preparations for his next.

The App

Jumping right into the app, I could easily find any song, artist or album I could think of. It was very snappy and intuitive. I really like the Queue feature where I could select any track and put it into a list to play, without interrupting the song I am currently playing. I was able to select five songs and put them into a personal playlist on the fly with ease. Being able to use most music apps was nice and the app responded quickly without lag. The downsides were that some buttons were oddly shaped in ways that made them hard to press it you have larger hands, like the search and favorites buttons. I found myself hitting the wrong ones at times. Although this unit comes with a remote, the app is really the intended way to control it. I looked at the remote briefly, but primarily used the app for control.

The Music

The Aurender A10’s total harmonic distortion is reported to be at just 0.00013% which is what makes its audio quality so clear and crisp. If you plan to use external sources, the A10 supports PCM rates up to 32/384, DSD64 and DSD128 via DoP over the USB inputs. I am fan of great-sounding DACs and the one found in the A10 does not disappoint. It’s Aurender’s own unique version of the AKM AK4490 DAC, which processes the PCM and DSD streams in their native forms to provide cleaner sound. The chipset has also been customized for MQA decoding. And as I mentioned before, it operates in a dual-mono configuration, hand in hand with the dual-mono linear power supplies. All this careful design and component selection is what makes the audio experience of the A10 so amazing. I listened to an 80’s playlist and it sounded full and clear. The unit was thoroughly warmed up but the I missed the analog turntable feel. Nonetheless, I thought it was an excellent music source that justifies its premium price tag.

The Unit Itself

This is the part of the A10 that gets rocky, the unit is finished nicely and weighs in at just over 20lbs. My biggest gripe concerns the four buttons on the front. It is almost impossible to make out their purpose. Since this unit is best controlled with an app and includes a remote, it made me wonder why they were even included in the first place, the faceplate would have looked so much cleaner without them. Now for the coolest feature; in the app, you can change the AMOLED display on the front to show a track list or a cool looking McIntosh-like meter. I loved its clean style, it was almost lifelike thanks to the AMOLED technology behind the screen. On the back of the unit we have the standard balanced and unbalanced analog outputs along with optical and USB inputs and an Ethernet port.

Conclusion

In summary, the Aurender A10 Music Server is well-built, sounds amazing, and has a smartly-designed app to control it. It is priced at $5500 so it may not be the most affordable option, but the app and build quality are second to none. And don’t forget to pick up a nice tablet to control it with, it’s far better than trying to use your phone. If you’re looking for a great way to simply enjoy and store music, the Aurender A10 Music Server/Player is a great choice!

If you have a potentially controversial film with a questionable quotient of sex and violence in your film recipe, this is the right time to get a censor certificate. Chances are, you can get away with murder…And much more.

Apparently the brief to the censor board from the I & B Ministry is to certify and not censor anything for as long as hard policy-decisions are not taken in the presence of the new CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi.

One of the big beneficiaries of this post-liberalization phase at the CBFC is film called Umeed directed by one Rajat S Mukherjee, this political drama about drug tests performed on children apparently contains several graphic scenes and profane language and a shot of model on the ramp exposing her upper torso under a bikini top.

Says a source from the CBFC, “We’ve cut only a shot showing a picture of Mrs Indira Gandhi. We are not allowed to cut anything at the moment for fear of being answerable to the I &B the high command. The brief from the top is to let everything go. If a film is certified ‘A’ it can get away with anything. Those kinds of films that were earlier getting ‘UA’ certificates are now getting ‘U’ certificates.”
