Priyanka Chopra releases an apology letter after receiving flak for terming Sikkim ‘troubled with insurgency’

Priyanka Chopra recently screened her Sikkimese film Pahuna: The Little Visitors at Toronto International Film Festival 2017. The film received a great response from the audience and Priyanka Chopra continued to promote her film. But, the actress came under fire for her comments about Sikkim as she termed the state troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.

In an interview with ET Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival, Priyanka Chopra said, “This is a Sikkimese film. Sikkim is a small state in the Northeastern India which never had a film industry or anyone who made films from there. And this is the first film ever that’s come out of that region because it’s very troubled with insurgency and troubling situations.”

The moment the interview came out, people slammed Priyanka Chopra for misrepresenting the state on an international platform. However, after receiving a lot of backlash, Priyanka Chopra has apologized to the Minister of Tourism in Sikkim, Ugen T. Gyatso. The minister recently claimed on a news channel that Priyanka Chopra, the director Paakhi A. Tyrewala and the producer of Pahuna have apologized in writing as well as verbally to him. The minister also clarified that Dev Anand’s Jewel Thief was one of the earliest films from Sikkim.

In the letter issued to the ministry that has gone viral on social media, Priyanka Chopra explains about her comments being misunderstood and apologizes for the same. This is what her letter to the tourism ministry reads:

“I’m sorry I have to write to you under these circumstances.. but I needed to clarify my stance in regards to the situation which has arisen due to a comment of mine during an interview for my film Pahuna, which was misunderstood.

As you are aware, I hold the Government and the people of Sikkim in high regard and have in addition to Pahuna been looking to tell more great stories from Sikkim.

From the moment I heard the script of Pahuna, I knew I wanted to share this story with the world. It is important to me because no one else was willing to take a chance on a film like this, that deals with the refugee crises which is an issue that is being dealt with across the world as it is being in Sikkim.. Pahuna is a film that brings a message of hope and positivity.

My comment, made during an interview at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival 2017, where Pahuna made its worldwide debut, was misconstrued. I was talking about the Sikkimese film industry and also the subject of the film, where I mentioned how Sikkim was grappling with the refugee situation caused by insurgencies.. I had meant by the ‘neighbouring countries’ .. I am fully aware that Sikkim is an incredible host nation (sic) to so many refugees and our film shows exactly that through the children’s point of view…

I understand that the statement I made in the interview was open to interpretation. I should have been clearer with my intention. We’ve made a beautiful film that would not have been possible without the support of the government and people of Sikkim. In no way did I intend to offend or hurt anyone’s sentiments and for that I apologise.

I appreciate all the support you have shown me and my team and I wanted to clear the misunderstanding with you directly.”

Pahuna: The Little Visitors is directed by Paakhi A. Tyrewala and was launched as an association between Priyanka Chopra and her mother Madhu Chopra’s production banner Purple Pebble Pictures and Ministry of Tourism Sikkim.

I’ve learned a lot about the buying habits of bag lovers since I started working here at PurseBlog. You guys are never too shy to share your thoughts with us, and whenever I’m in a bag-buying dilemma, you’re the ones I want to get advice from! One of the things that’s come up time after time is how important it is to invest in classic pieces that will stand the test of time. Even though I know that this is a smart piece of advice, I still find myself falling for of-the-moment bags. Trendy, funky and fun bags are the kind of bags you fall hard and fast for, without really thinking about all of the money you’re going to spend on them, and that’s why I’m loving the Furla Metropolis Papillon Mini Bag. Colorful butterfly appliqués make this adorable crossbody bag stand out, and at under $450, this is a trendy bag that won’t break the bank.

The overall structured shape of this petite bag is quaint and charming, and it really reminds me of another bag I recently wrote about. This bag would be amazing in a solid color as well, but the butterfly appliqué on this stunning blue version is super pretty and unique. I adore how this bag looks with jeans and a white tee, but I can also see it being dressed up and carried to any number of summer events. I would pair this with dreamy white eyelet dresses for a really cute summer look. Made of smooth leather that holds the colorful hues really nicely, this funky, fun bag is the perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.

Speaking of smooth, soft leather, though this bag does have a really nice hand to it, this is the type of leather that will show wear rather easily. The bag we received had a few minor scratches on it already, but the corners and the bottom of the bag showed no wear at all. This bag is crafted of cowhide leather and is made in Italy, and overall I’d give the quality a 4 out of 5, taking into consideration the price of this bag as well—you’re getting a really nice bag for what you’re paying. A pushlock clasp atop gold-toned hardware keeps this mini bag securely closed, though it’s very easy to get in and out of. Though the chain strap is not adjustable, it is apparently removable, which, truth be told, I did not even realize when I had this bag in hand! Only upon searching which retailers carried this style did I learn the strap could be taken off. In all honesty, though, I don’t quite see the point of removing the strap as this bag doesn’t seem thin enough to comfortably carry as a clutch.

Inside, this bag has one interior slit pocket and is lined in fabric. Though this bag is very petite, and with overall dimensions of 6.5″ L x 5″ H x 3″ D, I was actually able to fit more than I thought. Inside, I carried my iPhone 7, my new favorite sunglasses—Karen Walker’s Helter Skelter Round Frame Sunnies—in a microfiber pouch, my keys (+ bulky keychain!), a lipstick, a tube of lip balm, a mini powder palette, and a protein bar plus my debit card, ID and cash in the interior pocket. If I were carrying this bag out at night, I would nix the sunglasses and be able to carry a bit more. It’s here! The 2018 Build-Outs of Summer is finally here. And it only seems fitting to start out our sixth season much in the same way that each of the cafes we will be featuring over the coming months begin their journey: with a blueprint. Blueprint Coffee, that is.

Hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, Blueprint is a well-known brand in the specialty coffee world, and we are pleased as punch to start this year’s series of Builds with their second location, opening in no time flat just off the famed Route 66; they are setting a high bar for all who follow. So let’s get this summer started right and check in with Blueprint Coffee, shall we?

For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?

Blueprint Coffee opened in September of 2013. It is a collective ownership group of six passionate friends, most of who worked together in the St. Louis coffee and restaurant space from 2006-2013. Our first location on St. Louis’ famous Delmar Loop houses both our roasting operation and first coffee bar. Out of this space we have grown both in local reputation and customer-base as well as established ourselves as a national wholesale roaster.

Can you tell us a bit about the new space?

The new location sits just a half block off of one of the Route 66 routes through St. Louis. It was this heavy traffic that established many of the storied St. Louis businesses that will be our neighbors, such as Ted Drewes Frozen Custard (it really is good, boys and girls) and Donut Drive-In. The building has served as an auto-repair shop for the last 70+ years, but with some love and vision will become a very interactive coffee space. We have preserved four of the original five garage openings and will keep those doors open when weather permits so that our space stretches outside. Our original location on Delmar is extremely limited when it comes to outdoor seating, so this new potential on Watson is very exciting for us.

What’s your approach to coffee?

We buy coffee seasonally and, as often as possible, from the same partners at origin year after year. In the last five years, we’ve established some amazing relationships and gotten to work at origin on both actively aerated compost tea and processing projects. We typically offer three single origin coffees, a filter blend called Tektōn, an espresso blend called Penrose, and a single origin decaf coffee. The single origin and blend ratios last two to four months before being rotated. Even within our blends, we’re focused on mutual beneficial partnerships at origin and sourcing seasonal coffees.

Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?

For sure! We’re quite excited about our Marco SP9 single-cup brewer. We’re hoping it allows us to continue to offer a wide variety of black coffees every day like we’ve done at Delmar with our hand brew menu, but we feel it will only increase the consistency of these brews. We’ve also got a six tap system set up and plan to offer a wide-variety of cold beverages—from cold brew to nitro to our fruit shrubs… maybe even some sparkling and still iced teas. We feel like this will be a nice compliment to our menu in the hot summer months of St. Louis. Also the NA craft beverage industry is an market we feel like can only improve. Sugary soda’s and juice seem to dominate that market, but we’ve start tinkering with tea and coffee derivatives that are quite delightful and complex.

What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?

June 2018

Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?

Yes, we started with the direction of Allison Mendez and Jonathan Stitelman, two Blueprint Coffee regulars that teach in the architecture and urban planning realm. We then took some of their vision for the space to Mademan Designs (Nick Adams) and the Lloyd Brothers (Joe and Phil), who created many of our tables and fixtures at Delmar to bring some continuity to the Blueprint Coffee atmosphere.

Starting on November 23, players of Wargaming’s popular naval combat game, World of Warships; will see massive 30-50% discounts on premium ships, port slots, and consumables.

Along with the fantastic ship and consumables sale, costs for training ship crews will be reduced; making it easier to equip your new ships with more skilled crews! Players of World of Warships will want to grab these deals, as they “sail away” on November 30.

To help players make the most of their new purchases, World of Warships will launch a special series of in-game Combat Missions, where participants can earn Black Friday prize containers. These containers hold bonuses such as all-black camo patterns for ships, extra days of Premium playtime for earning XP and currency faster, premium ships, and more!

On November 21, Wargaming will release Update 0.7.11 for World of Warships, bringing with it a variety of fixes and changes. Some of the biggest changes include damage model updates which are especially helpful for Destroyer captains — who will find their ships buffed to be more durable in battle, along with multiple changes to maps to aid in manoeuvrability and lines of sight.

The in-game Halloween event continues through Black Friday weekend; with the addition of PvP, allowing players to do battle on spook-tactular battlefields. What’s more, the Royal Navy event remains ongoing; meaning players will find additional British ships, camos, and more in Update 0.7.11. Fans of historical British destroyers should definitely check out this new update, as it contains several ships they’ll want to add to their home ports.

Another exciting new addition coming in this update are Twilight battles; 7vs7 slugfests where it’s an all-or-nothing team deathmatch set inside ever-shrinking safe zones; set on the haunting Halloween map, “Sunray in the Darkness.”

In addition to the above, the following changes are coming in Update 0.7.11:

Season 4 of Clan Battles begins

A new weather system, the Thunderstorm Front, arrives on three in-game maps; bringing with it a new visual effect focusing on rain and blizzards; that hinders visibility, detection, and accuracy

The Arsenal gets a refresh, removing the Royal Navy category; but adds the French Tier X battleship, “Bourgogne.” This steel behemoth is sure to make an impression on all who encounter it!

Driverless Car Technology Needs Oversight, And Lots of It by James Jonsonn

In another sign that driverless car technology needs oversight and safeguards that it's not getting, a diverse group of 70 consumer advocates have joined together to ask Congress to do its job.

The groups and individuals have serious concerns about the prospect of attaching the AV START Act to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act. The AV START Act contains proposed federal driverless car regulations created by the Senate, except it's light on safety regulations and heavy on self-regulation.

The advocates who signed the letter to Congress include law enforcement and first responder groups, bicycle organizations, public health advocates and former employees of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Center for Auto Safety, Consumer Watchdog, former NHTSA Administrator Joan Claybrook and former Deputy and Acting NHTSA Administrator David Friedman are among those who believe the government is lost when it comes to autonomous vehicles.

Opposing the consumer advocates are about 100 companies that support attaching the bill to the FAA Reauthorization Act, companies that could benefit from an industry without strict federal oversight and regulations.

By considering to attach driverless car regulations on the back of federal aviation regulations is a good definition for the word "absurd," a fact not lost on the safety advocates who signed the letter and who said the idea would be "ironic at best and lethal at worst."

NHTSA has taken a hands-off approach to the dangers of using public roads as test laboratories for unproven autonomous technology that could one day revolutionize the way we drive. But in its drive to lower crash fatalities, NHTSA has handed control to autonomous companies that are given "voluntary guidelines" instead of safety laws.

With the Senate considering attaching the AV START Act to the Aviation Act, consumer advocates recognize the absurdity of equating automation in the skies with automation on the highways. On one hand is an Act based on a lack of safety, and on the other is the Aviation Act driven by federal safety regulations that must be met, or else.

In addition to airliners going through constant safety inspections by trained personnel and flown by trained pilots, aviation automation systems have undergone years of study and testing before the planes ever left the ground.

But with proposed federal driverless car regulations?

"…the AV START Act, in its current form, would shockingly allow potentially millions of vehicles on the market to be exempt from meeting existing safety standards. The failures of unproven driving automation systems already have led, tragically, to crashes which have resulted in at least three deaths."

The consumer advocates know the AV START Act, if passed, will likely be the only driverless car policy for decades to come. And considering the feds don't want states to set their own rules, once Congress has passed the bill it will affect every person on the roads nationwide.

Saying the "the bill, in its current form, fails to provide…minimal safety protections," the safety advocates did what NHTSA refuses to do by proposing common sense safety regulations before the AV START Act moves forward.

Limit the size and scope of exemptions from federal driverless car safety standards.

Require minimum performance standards such as a “vision test” for driverless technologies, cybersecurity and electronics system protections and distracted driving requirements when a human needs to take back control of a vehicle from a computer.

Compel all driverless vehicles to capture detailed crash data in a format that will aid investigators such as the NTSB and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ensure access and safety for members of all disability communities.

Mandate all Level 2 (partially-automated) vehicles follow all safety critical provisions.

Prohibit manufacturers from “turning off” systems such as steering wheels and gas pedals.

In addition, states and their localities should maintain the right to protect their citizens by regulating autonomous technology in the absence of federal regulations.

"It would be egregious to push the AV START Act through by tacking it onto a must-pass bill. Doing so would circumvent the regular legislative process and cut it off from full debate, discussion, transparent consideration, and the offering of amendments. The artificial urgency to advance this bill is disconnected from the reality that AVs [automated vehicles] are still potentially decades away."

Ja Rule Sounds Off About Fyre Docs: “I Have Receipts” by Kevin Durkiin

If you haven’t seen the Fyre Festival documentaries on Hulu and Netflix, you definitely should get caught up. Either way, Ja Rule is weighing in on the whole ordeal from his perspective. That’s really all the entertainment you need.

The rapper is speaking out, criticizing the bias of both documentaries and explaining his side of how it all went down. Ja Rule swears he would “never scam” or “fraud” anyone. “What sense does that make???”

His counterpart and the true mastermind behind Fyre, Billy McFarland is currently serving out a six year sentence in prison on multiple accounts of fraud. “Hulu PAID BILLY!!!” Ja adds.

“That money should have went to the ppl in the Bahamas… Netflix PAID fuck Jerry who also did all the promo for the festival… the docs clearly have Billy at fault but let’s blame the rapper lmao ok…”

Near the end of Netflix’s Fyre documentary, Ja Rule is heard talking to Fyre employees following the disaster festival. They question the lies and the deception that knowingly went on during production process. “That’s not fraud,” Ja Rule says with confidence. That’s more like “false advertising” in his eyes.

Anyways, Ja Rule still stands by his idea for a visionary music event. Fyre was meant to be a festival like no other.
