UTS Sydney is currently excavating to construct the new DR Chau Chak building. The Australian Museum is also undertaking an archaeological dig at the site prior to construction.
From 1803-1837 the site was part of the John Harris Farm on swampy land with a creek running through Ultimo road to Darling Harbour. By 1840 the swampy land had been reclaimed by fill from Brickfield Hill.
The 1850's saw a number of timber houses along the creek and in the 1870's the northern part of the site was used by the Lithgow Valley Coal Company which became the NSW shale & Oil Company and later the Commonwealth Oil Company occupying the site until 1928 possibly 1941..
Also in the 1870's a terrace of three two story brick residences were constructed along Ultimo Road, you can see the remnants of these in the foreground of the picture above.

Architecture studio, FJMT has designed the new UTS central building at the university of technology in sydney. for this landmark site, a sinuous architectural form has been developed by the architects, which aims to provide a building that responds to the harsh urban environment through both aesthetics and function.
The lower levels are designed by FJMT to comprise of a dramatic podium, overlooking broadway to the south and alumni green to the north. this will house the bulk of the social, student-focused areas, including a learning commons, the new UTS library, scholarly reading room, collaborative classrooms, general teaching spaces and a student services hub. Meanwhile, the upper levels take the form of a tower that twists and rotates as it climbs, in response to the surrounding building and site geometries.
