Grad eingestuft. Mit dieser Route wurde erstmals der 6. Grad in großen Wänden erreicht.

Der Monte Civetta ist heute Bestandteil des UNESCO Weltnaturerbes Dolomiten.

Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens, seen from the hill of the Gloriette, city of Vienna, Austria

Some background information:

Schönbrunn Palace (in German: "Schloss Schönbrunn") was the main summer residence of the Habsburg rulers, located in Hietzing, the 13th district of the Austrian capital city of Vienna. The name Schönbrunn (in English: "beautiful spring") has its roots in an artesian well from which water was consumed by the court. The Baroque palace has 1,441 rooms and is one of the most important architectural, cultural, and historic monuments in Austria. The history of the palace and its vast gardens spans over 300 years, reflecting the changing tastes, interests, and aspirations of successive Habsburg monarchs. It has been a major tourist attraction since the mid-1950s.

In 1569, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II purchased a large floodplain of the Wien river beneath a hill, situated between Meidling and Hietzing, nowadays both urban quarters of the city of Vienna. In 1548, the former owner Hermann Bayr, at that time mayor of Vienna, had erected a mansion there named Katterburg. The emperor ordered the area to be fenced and put game there such as pheasants, ducks, deer and boar, in order for it to serve as the court's recreational hunting ground. In a small separate part of the area, "exotic" birds such as turkeys and peafowl were kept. while fishponds were excavated too.

During the next century, the area was used as a hunting and recreation ground. Eleonora Gonzaga from the noble house of Gonzaga, who loved hunting, spent much time there and was bequeathed the area as her widow's residence after the death of her husband, Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II. From 1638 to 1643, she added a palace to the Katterburg mansion. In 1642, the name "Schönbrunn" was first mentioned on an invoice. It was also Eleonora Gonzaga, who commissioned the building of the first Schönbrunn orangery. During the Second Turkish Siege in 1683, the palace with its outbuildings and all associated gardens was damaged beyond use. Although Eleonora Gonzaga requested that at least two rooms and a hall be restored, she died in 1686 before this could be carried out.

Schönbrunn Palace in its present form was built and remodelled in the 1740s and 1750s during the reign of empress Maria Theresa, who received the estate as a wedding gift. In 1741, she had a continuous avenue built from Schönbrunn to Laxenburg Palace and according to her orders, the building was also raised by one storey. The last Holy Roman Emperor and first Emperor of Austria Franz I commissioned the redecoration of the palace exterior in the neoclassical style as it appears today.

In 1805 and 1809, Napoleon and his entourage stayed at Schönbrunn Palace when the French army had occupied Vienna. The Treaty of Schönbrunn between Prussia and France was signed here in 1805, and the even more significant Peace of Schönbrunn between France and Austria was concluded at Schönbrunn in 1809.

Franz Joseph, the longest-reigning Emperor of Austria, was born at Schönbrunn and spent – together with his wife Elisabeth (who was nicknamed "Sisi" resp. "Sissi") – a great deal of his life there. He died there, at the age of 86, on 21st November 1916. Following the downfall of the Habsburg monarchy in November 1918, the palace became the property of the newly founded Austrian Republic and was preserved as a museum.

During World War II, the palace was bombed by American warplanes in February 1945. After the war and during the Allied Occupation of Austria, Schönbrunn Palace was requisitioned to provide office space for both the British Delegation to the Allied Commission for Austria, and for the headquarters for the small British Military Garrison present in Vienna. With the reestablishment of the Austrian republic in 1955, the palace once again became a museum. It is still sometimes used for important events such as the meeting between U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev in 1961.

Since 1992, the palace and gardens have been owned and administered by a company wholly owned by the Republic of Austria. The company conducts preservation and restoration of all palace properties without state subsidies. UNESCO catalogued Schönbrunn Palace on the World Heritage List in 1996, together with its gardens, as a remarkable Baroque ensemble and example of synthesis of the arts.

In my humble opinion, the palace and its gardens are surely worth a visit. But if you plan to see it, consider carefully, if you really have to explore its interior. The admission fee of 40 € per person is much too high, bearing in mind that the rooms are not more worth seeing than the interiors of any other palace. We have never paid such a high admission fee anywhere else. Beyond that, Schönbrunn Palace is really crowded with tourists and it’s no pleasure at all to walk through the interiors together with masses of other visitors. In particular, the many busloads of tourists and school classes were very annoying, at least for us.

Vienna is the capital, most populous city, and also one of nine states of Austria. It is Austria's primate city, with just over two million residents. Its larger metropolitan area has even a population of nearly 2.9 million, representing almost one-third of the country's total number of inhabitants. Vienna is the cultural, economic, and political center of Austria, the fifth-largest city by population in the European Union, and the most populous of the cities on the river Danube.

In 2001, Vienna‘s city center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But in July 2017, it was moved to the list of World Heritage in Danger, due to a high-rise project on the Heumarkt (in English: "Hay Market"). A variety of architectural styles have been preserved in Vienna, including Romanesque and Baroque architecture. And the Vienna Secession, an art movement closely related to Art Nouveau, has left many architectural traces in Vienna too.

Vienna has a long-standing tradition of art and culture, encompassing theater, opera, classical music, and fine arts. The city is renowned for its rich musical heritage, having been home to many celebrated classical composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Haydn, Mahler, Mozart, Schoenberg, Schubert, Johann Strauss I, and Johann Strauss II.

The Austrian capital has three opera houses and numerous museums, some of them focussing on the paintings of old masters or modern painters. But Vienna is also famous for its delicacies, like "Wiener Schnitzel", "Apfelstrudel" as well as several kinds of specialty coffees and sausages. Hence, the city is a great destination for a multi-day cultural trip and gourmet tour.

Usually I don't post (any more) the same picture twice, but this is kind of special case.

I posted a colour version here and a B&W one on 1x where it was not published (it didn't get through the curation filter).

Then I submitted the initial B&W version to the 1x critiques and I got a lot of very useful and friendly advices which I readily put in practice... and voilà the result!..;-)
