Der Hippodrom ist ein Teil des großen flavischen Kaiserpalasts auf dem Palatin in Rom. Er wurde von Kaiser Titus Flavius Domitianus (Domitian) errichtet.

The Hippodrome is a part of the great Flavian Imperial Palace on the Palatine in Rome. It was built by Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus (Domitian).

A section of the famous formal Renaissance gardens of the Château de Villandry, Loire Valley, France

Some background information:

The Château de Villandry is a large château located in the village of Villandry, in the French department of Indre-et-Loire. The palace sits in the Val de Loire in the former Touraine region, about 15 km (9.3 miles) to the southwest of the city of Tours. Both village and Château de Villandry are also situated on the Cher River Cher and Villandry is the last commune before the Cher River issues into the Loire River.

In medieval times, a stronghold named Colombier stood on the spot of today’s Château de Villandry. It was built in the 12th century and in 1189, it was that fortress, where the English King Henry II Plantagenet signed the Peace of Colombier after his defeat by King Philip II of France. In the early 16th century, the estate was acquired by the nobleman Jean Le Breton. He was the minister of finance of the then French King Francis I and also the Controller-General for War.

After having bought the lands, De Breton had the old Gothic castle torn down. Only the foundations and the former donjon from the 14th century remained. Around this keep the new palace and its gardens were built and finished in 1536. The Château de Villandry is one of the last châteaus in the Loire Valley that were constructed in the Renaissance style. Its architecture lacks both any Italian influence and decorative medival elements like turrets or murdering holes. Hence, the architectural style is very French, already foreshadowing the architecture of the châteaus d’Anet and Fontainebleau, which were built later during the reign of King Henry IV of France.

The mansion remained in possession of the family De Breton for more than two centuries, but in 1754, Michel-Ange, Marquis de Castellane, bought the estate. He had the palace rebuilt according to the standards of the 18th century and even the beautiful Renaissance gardens were converted into an English-style landscaped garden, which met the taste of the time.

As a consequence of the French Revolution, the Château de Villandry was confiscated. But at the beginning of the 19th century, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte acquired it for his brother Joseph Bonaparte. In 1823, the estate was bought by the noble family Hainguerlot, who kept it for almost a century. In 1906, Joachim Carvallo purchased the property and poured an enormous amount of time, money and devotion into repairing it and creating what many consider to be the most beautiful gardens anywhere.

These formal Renaissance gardens, restored according to original plans, include a water garden, ornamental flower gardens, and also vegetable gardens. The gardens are laid out in formal patterns created with low box hedges. In 1920, both castle and gardens were opened to the public and in 1934, the estate was designated a national historic monument.

Today’s owner is Henri Carvallo, the great-grandson of Joachim Carvallo. Since 2000, the Château de Villandry and its gardens belong to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site "The Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes" with its many breathtaking châteaux. Altogether there are more than 400 of them in the Loire region.

A Happy New Year 2023 to all of you!

The Melngalvju nams (House of Blackheads / Schwarzhäupterhaus) is the house of the brotherhood of unmarried German merchants. Their guild house was constructed in the early 14th century. It was severely damaged by German artillery in 1941 and the remains of the building were demolished by the Soviets in 1948. The building was reconstructed 1995-1999.

The St. Peter's Church (Svētā Pētera baznīca) in the back mostly dates from the 15th century. Between 1691 and 1690, some Baroque additions were made, such as the new tower and the western façade. The church was severely damaged in 1941; restoration lasted until 1991.

Die Altstadt von Porto ist Weltkulturerbe der UNESCO.

Sometimes it has its advantages living in the countryside - especially if there is fresh snow, not a soul around and everything seems to be unsoiled. Freezing off vital body parts but enjoying the scenery. Hoping you do, too! I might keep on boring you with more winter shots to come. This one was taken about 10 minutes from where we live.

Thanks for the textures goes to Cheryl Tarrant.

we finally seem to have a little bit of Winter Wonderland. Snow fell last night and we had teensy weensy snow flakes falling when I was up and about in the great outdoors. The sky was overcast with tiny specks of the lightest blue. Just love those soft colors. Hope that the weather will remain like this over the weekend so that I can head out again and bore you all with winter shots ;-). Must admit though that the birds have flown in from Shadowhouse Creations.

Better in large ;-).

Y'all have a wonderful weekend with lots of great light!

The Chateau de l’Islette in the village of Azay-le-Rideau with its little wooden bridge crossing the Indre river, Loire Valley, France

Some background information:

The Château de l'Islette is a 16th century Renaissance castle that lies just 2 km (1.2 miles) west of the village of Azay-le-Rideau in the French department of Indre-et-Loire. It is also located about 30 km (19 miles) to the southwest of the city of Tours. The estate of the Château de l'Islette is crossed by the course of the Indre river, which acts as a natural border between the two communes of Azay-le-Rideau on the river’s right bank and Cheillé on its left bank.

The castle is often compared to its famous neighbour, the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau. But in my opinion, this comparison is a bit unfair. The Château d'Azay-le-Rideau is definitely more beautiful and also has a more significant history, but the Château de l'Islette has its own subtle charm, is less frequented and also well worth seeing. So, if you should ever visit the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, don’t miss visiting the Château de l'Islette too.

From 1350 to 1650, the estate belonged to the de Maillé family, which ranked among the Touraine nobility. In 1531, one the family’s members, René de Maillé, commissioned the construction of the present castle. It is assumed that originally there was only a common water mill on the site, where each peasant could come and grind his wheat in return for a fee to the Lords de Maille.

In the next centuries, the Château de l'Islette passed into the hands of different noble families. The first one was the family Tiercelin d'Appelvoisin, followed by the family Barjot, and in 1706, through marriage by the marquesses of de Roncé. As these three families were closely linked, there was no change of owner in the proper sense.

When the French Revolution broke out in 1789, the owner of the Château de l'Islette was Charles Tiercelin d'Apelvoisin. As he was a member of the French king’s general staff, he was guillotined in 1793. During the First Empire the castle was sold and had several owners during the 19th century. One of them was Jean-Baptiste Dupuy, who carried out a number of renovations and modifications to both the interior and the exterior of the Château de l'Islette in the early 19th century.

Dupuy had the gables of the top floor windows removed and the pointed roofs of the two towers cut off. And he also had the moat that surrounded the castle filled in and covered with gravel. In addition, he placed his own coat of arms, invented by himself, prominently on the mantelpiece of the fireplace in the largest room on the first floor. It is said, that the major motivation of Depuy, who was described as a "strong personailty", was to leave his mark on this historic and prestigious place.

At the end of the 19th century, the Château de l'Islette became the love nest of two other strong personalities: the well-known sculptors Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin. Both rented the castle in the summers of 1890, 1891 and 1892 to work and live out their tempestuous and intimate relationship. Rodin worked on his famous "Balzac and Camille", while Claudel sculpted the bronze "La Petite Châtelaine", which is on permanent display in the castle. Claudel was much younger than Rodin and their love affair was shaped by quarrels, mood swings and outbursts of emotion. As a result, she cut ties with Rodin in 1893.

Today, the Château de l'Islette is privately owned by the family Michaud. From May to September it is open to the public, while the family moves to the gardener’s cottage within sight during this time. The current owners have converted the castle’s interior into a real living space and it is very interesting to see, how they have teamed the amenities of modern life with historical furnishings and equipment. We haven’t seen anything comparable in any other castle yet.

Since 2000, the Château de l'Islette belongs to the UNESCO Word Heritage Site "The Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes" with its many breathtaking châteaux. Altogether there are more than 400 of them in the Loire region.

The Zambezi River rises in northern Zambia near Kalene Hill. It flows south to Angola and then back to Zambia, further through the Caprivi swamps, where it joins the Chobe. Further east it forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Finally, he flows through Mozambique into the Indian Ocean. He is 2,700 km long. In the area of the Victoria Falls 12 km away, it flows slowly and quietly, forming small islands and stores sand. 3 km further south, it becomes faster and faster and crashes over a width of 1,700 m into a 108 m deep gorge. The locals call the falls "Mosi or Tunya", meaning "smoke with thunder".

The photo was taken early in the evening on a helicopter flight. We were lucky, it was the last flight that day, because the next day we went home.

After disagreements over the design of the palace, in 1764 the design of the palace was totally vested in the architect Carl von Gontard. The three-story façade had already begun to rise around unfinished interiors, as construction had steadily been underway, with 220 metre east and west façades. Between the pilasters, what appears to be brick is actually a painted effect, leaving only the King's south wing with exposed brick. Repointing the mortar of the joints proved to be an arduous and expensive task, therefore Frederick had the brick covered in stucco and painted in such a way that even tourists today are fooled by the deceptive finish.
