The 3 day training will bring together fifteen (15) technical staff from UNDP Country Offices (particularly those responsible for Public Administration Reforms) in Eastern and Southern Africa.

Forty five year old Sushila Bai is a widow and former manual scavenger. “The little we have made since the pond was leased has made a big difference,” she says. The economic empowerment has helped the women and their families live a life of dignity and address issues of discrimination collectively. Women like Sushila Bai have ensured that their children are no longer discriminated against at school.

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, UN Women, UNDP, and UNCDF jointly organized an event in Dhaka with several financial institutions in Bangladesh to highlight the importance of better and easier access to finance for women. The event was an initiative of the “WING: Women’s Empowerment for Inclusive Growth” project, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangladesh.

In Jalalabad’s ironsmith bazar, Zubair and Zahir hold hands on the way home. They are poor and they both work as assistants to a shoemaker. According to UNICEF, 40% of kids in Afghanistan are out of school. Providing affordable education for Afghanistan’s young as they grow into adulthood is vital. They are the future of our cities.

 

“We don’t really like this work. We’d rather finish school and do something better with our lives,” says Zubair.

 

Life on the streets and in the fields of Jalalabad city in the eastern province of Nangarhar, where UNDP supports projects covering livelihoods, governance, rule of law, gender, the environment and health.

Despite legislation that prohibits manual scavenging, it is estimated that a significant proportion of the country’s 2.6 million dry latrines are cleaned manually. Women comprise the vast majority of manual scavengers. Community advocates are playing an important role in ending the practice.

Shah bibi 45 says, “Now we have clean water available not only for drinking but for home gardening too. I save a lot by growing vegetables like tomatoes, chillies, coriander, mint etc at home”.

Gul Bakht 38, “Open defecation and sanitation was a major problem especially if done near water bodies. It can end up contaminating the drinking water supply; cause a host of other problems and illness. We have overcome diseases like diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid to a major extend.
