Under the project, more than 1,800 households have received training and support in adopting more sustainable agricultural livelihoods, including the cultivation of saline-tolerant rice, mixed fruit orchards, vegetables, pulses, and fish-rice rotation. More than 1,680 households have received training in livestock-rearing (including pigeons and ducks), while 1,500+ households have received training in fisheries including small-scale crab farming.

Noor Jahan, 36 a very active member of the community organization ‘Sardar Nabi Bux’ in Panjpai is running her own embroidery business. Noor says, “I was trained by RAHA programme in 2011 and felt honoured when I was asked to conduct the next training in 2012. I had the urge to become an independent woman and in our culture/village it’s difficult for women to go out and work. I am very happy that I can work from home now generating enough income to feed my family ”.

Recently I visited Tajikistan and Afghanistan for UNDP, capturing efforts on both sides of the border to enhance mutually improved living conditions.

The recent laws are bringing about a slow but definite change. In Siddigunj village in the state of Madhya Pradesh, a group of women erstwhile manual scavengers formed a self-help group for a more dignified and financially sustainable livelihood. In 2013, the United Nations Development Programme supported the collective in leasing out a pond from the local authorities to start fish farming.
