The shell of this turtle was about a foot long. It came out of the woods on 05/27/10 and stopped about 15 feet away from where I was in the middle of planting a tree - sat there and watched me for the next half hour!
Back in Midland we had turtles in the back yard. They would even come up and scratch at the door sometimes, in hopes of obtaining a nice juicy strawberry!
This is Rootbeer, our Three-Toed Box Turtle. We've had her for 24 years now. She was already this large when we got her. In the summer, Rootbeer lives in an old dog crate shoved under the bushes. She has to be surrounded on all sides by fencing, or she will climb or dig her way out. She has already escaped twice, and been missing for a few days. I'm sorry she hates life in captivity so much.
