There are several waterfalls on the U.S. side, which means it’s a lot easier to see all of them from the Canadian side. There is a long, clean view of the massive falls from the Canadian side, which makes the whole of Niagara Falls almost more spectacular when you can see everything all at once. If you’ve come to see the waterfalls and that’s it, this is the place to do it.

What a stroke of luck! I visited Kraft Azalea Gardens only because it was listed on the Tripadvisor's list of best things to do in Winter Park, Florida. Little did I know that there were a great number of egrets preparing nests for their future offspring. I had also just bought a Tamron 100-400 for the trip thinking I might find some birds during my vacation. I quickly discovered what a challenge it could be shooting birds in flight. The birds took off quickly and flew very short distances through trees at close quarters. In fact, I used less than 200mm for the flight shots while I did sometimes use 400mm for the shots of the birds in the trees and on the ground. I eventually moved around the area to get different views of the incoming birds as I will show in future posts.

Avila's old city, surrounded by imposing city walls comprising eight monumental gates, 88 watchtowers and more than 2500 turrets, is one of the best-preserved medieval bastions in Spain. In winter, when an icy wind whistles in off the plains, the old city huddles behind the high stone walls as if seeking protection from the harsh Castilian climate. At night, when the walls are illuminated to magical effect, you'll wonder if you've stumbled into a fairy tale. It's a deeply religious city that for centuries has drawn pilgrims to the cult of Santa Teresa de Ávila, with its many churches, convents and high-walled palaces. As such, Ávila is the essence of Castilla and the epitome of old Spain.

Stormy Sunset over Kermorvan Lighthouse, Brittany, France

I am looking through the many images that I took in Brittany and Normandy back in January in preparation for another visit early September and I am reinvigorated to return now, especially as I now have a travelling companion joining me.

The reason for my return to this gorgeous part of the French coastline is to create a workshop in Brittany and Normandy for September 2024. If anyone is interested in joining me, feel free to sign up to my NEWSLETTER as my subscribers have first dibs on any new workshops created.

Anyhow, Kermorvan Lighthouse was high on my wish list of lighthouses to visit on the Brittany coastline and WOW, I was not to be disappointed. It was a stunning sunset set behind a stunning lighthouse. That sky was quite incredible and I got to enjoy it all on my own.

Kermorvan happened to be my favourite lighthouse of those I visited, in part because of its extraordinary landscape around it but also because it is a really beautiful looking lighthouse. Sunset is the key time to shoot it too. Fun fact that I learnt about this lighthouse (and others I guess) is that the rear and sides of the lighthouse are painted white so that sailors can easily identify it from the backdrop out at sea. You learn something new everyday.

I hope you are all having a great day

And a Dutch mill in monochrome :)

The old cityscape of Amiens is a charming and picturesque scene, especially during twilight. As the evening approaches, the historic buildings and narrow streets are bathed in a soft, fading light that adds a warm and nostalgic atmosphere. In the background, the magnificent Amiens Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, rises prominently against the dusky sky. Its intricate façade and towering spires create a striking contrast with the quaint, centuries-old houses and market squares in the foreground. Amiens, blending its rich history with the quiet serenity of dusk.....

QUEBEC CITY, CANADA- Red roof of the famous Auberge du Tresor restaurant and hotel in the historic old town of Quebec City......

A church in the late evening is different from the daytime, we walked our evening walk there and the sun behind the sky gave a strange light on the cemetery with that church it felt like in a film scene.

In the twilight there was a nice warm atmosphere of light.....

Queuing for the entrance of Saint Peter's basilica we past by this scene. Using the telephoto lens and some patience got me this serene shot of one of the Swiss guards. I like the colours of the uniform, the framing of the scene and the repetition of the arches. Most visitors didn't even notice him. But after I took my chance more people tried the same, with their phones.... Hmm, I wonder if they kept their shots.

update 250220: I followed a suggestion to crop the original image to its current size. The focus is even more on the colourful uniform and the soft lights and colours in the background. It makes the image stronger. Thanks for the tip Titus!

Enjoy!

Pumapunku or Puma Punku (Aymara and Quechua puma cougar, puma, punku door, Hispanicized Puma Puncu) is part of a large temple complex or monument group that is part of the Tiwanaku Site near Tiwanaku, in western Bolivia. It is believed to date to AD/CE 536 and later.

Tiwanaku is significant in Inca traditions because it is believed to be the site where the world was created. In Aymara, Puma Punku's name means "The Door of the Puma". The Pumapunku complex consists of an unwalled western court, a central unwalled esplanade, a terraced platform mound that is faced with stone, and a walled eastern court.

At its peak, Pumapunku is thought to have been "unimaginably wondrous," adorned with polished metal plaques, brightly colored ceramic and fabric ornamentation, and visited by costumed citizens, elaborately dressed priests, and elites decked in exotic jewelry. Current understanding of this complex is limited due to its age, the lack of a written record, and the current deteriorated state of the structures due to treasure hunting, looting, stone mining for building stone and railroad ballast, and natural weathering.

***

The largest of these stone blocks is 7.81 meters long, 5.17 meters wide, averages 1.07 meters thick, and is estimated to weigh about 131 tonnes. The second largest stone block found within the Pumapunku is 7.90 metres (25.9 feet) long, 2.50 metres (8 feet 2 inches) wide, and averages 1.86 metres (6 feet 1 inch) thick. Its weight has been estimated to be 85.21 tonnes. Both of these stone blocks are part of the Plataforma Lítica and composed of red sandstone. Based upon detailed petrographic and chemical analyses of samples from both individual stones and known quarry sites, archaeologists concluded that these and other red sandstone blocks were transported up a steep incline from a quarry near Lake Titicaca roughly 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) away. Smaller andesite blocks that were used for stone facing and carvings came from quarries within the Copacabana Peninsula about 90 kilometres (56 miles) away from and across Lake Titicaca from the Pumapunku and the rest of the Tiwanaku Site.

A Gothic-Mudejar castle.

Construction of this building was ordered by D. Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, for use as his private residence in the city of his birth.

It is a Gothic-Mudejar style castle, designed by master Hanequín of Brussels. It was built on San Cristobal hill, set over one story only. The bailey is an equilateral triangle and the rest of the building is built around it. The castle is in the form of a 6-pointed star, with a cylindrical tower at the end of each.

in this small town, where not much to do, is this beautiful castle where I had the opportunity to photograph this in the golden hour :)

Due to its prominence when seen from the lower ground of the Central Belt, Ben Vorlich is one of the most commonly seen of Munros, Scotland's peaks of 3000ft height or above. This square is the most beautiful in Spain, she held the fair of the cheese that takes place at the end of April. The plaza is a joint Renaissance chaired in the Center by the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro, conqueror of Peru. The plaza has notable important buildings such as the Church of San Martín de Tours, Renaissance factory and many emblazoned houses and palaces. This square for centuries occupied the old market, moreover, it all shows and celebrations were held. The neighborhoods of Jews and Muslims settled around the square, as well as craftsmen and merchants. Initially the Main square it was located in the suburbs, outside the fortified city. Primitive square of arrabal moved in the 16th century, a magnificent Manor plaza and Renaissance, where the nobles sought to establish their homes.

Percé is one of the nicest towns on the Gaspé Peninsula. Famous is the Rocher Percé (Percé Rock), a detached limestone rock in the water of 88 meters high and 475 meters long. At low tide the rock is accessible via a sandbank. But when I wanted to go there it was closed on both sides, let me know what you think about ......

Though the San Giovanni church seems like a tourist attraction, it is in fact located on privately owned farmland. Due to the large amount of tourists flooding the area, there are now many restrictions. There are shoulder high fences protecting the grass and there are “forbidden signs” everywhere. Flying drones is not permitted, neither is walking on the grass. It isn’t as idyllic as it looks on the famous Dolomites photos.

The Synagogue was built in 1872 and it's got a Neo-Romanesque architecture. The Façade was made from red bricks while the entrance was made with white and red bricks. Above the entrance door there is a rose window, very similar to the one at St. Peter and St. Paul's church in Obernai. The synagogue's interior is decorated in white and gray colors.

Built in 1854, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille is a Neo-Gothic structure with surprising details. The cathedral stands on a site that in the Middle Ages provided shelter for an ancient statue of the Virgin Mary, considered to have miraculous powers. The statue was protected by an iron trellis, which explains the cathedral's name "Notre-Dame de la Treille" ("Our Lady of the Trellis"). Unique in architectural style, the relatively modern cathedral was designed by architect Pierre-Louis Carlier in collaboration with Peter Rice, the engineer for the Sydney Opera House and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Glen Lyon is a glen in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland. It is the longest enclosed glen in Scotland and runs for 34 miles from Loch Lyon in the west to the village of Fortingall in the east.
