Little Blue created by: Debbie Porter (Into The Wild).

Design Inspiration

Debbie has been lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the little blue penguin in our local Banks Peninsula area – their beautiful and intense colour has inspired this design. For ‘Little Blue’ Debbie has used a stylised blue design to represent this little penguin. The artist wanted to add some fish, krill and squid – a penguin’s diet, as well as some of a penguin’s oceanic neighbours, such as a whale. There are some surf boards and waves also to celebrate the ocean.

Though it was a dry crisp day, Fall has just begun in Tidewater. The bald cypress are beginning to show their colors like the hardwoods. These trees anchor the shoreline along the Currituck Sound near Munden's Point.

There are three concepts common to all my work: 1.Contrast 2.Echo 3.The Golden Ratio. These three simple 'Basics' are a distillation of the laws of nature. They provide a framework that relentlessly relates my creative activity back to the etheric forces that shape our sensory world.

For example, "Daydream" began when my eye caught the contrast of certain qualities: light/dark, defined shapes/indistinct shapes, vertical/horizontal, contraction/expansion, etc. The shape of the foreground is an echo of the shape of the ship. Notice how the red of her jacket on the far left 'echos' the red cabin on the stern of the ship. The back of the bench echos the planks of the boardwalk. The bench itself echos the dominant vertical and horizontal compositional theme. Horizontal is sleep and death. Vertical is the awake ego. The foreground portrays the physical/etheric realm. The water [middle ground] represents the astral realm. The light background represents the Spirit realm. The ship represents the soul that carries us back and forth through the astral realm to the physical and spirit worlds. The horizon, the red cabin on the stern of the ship and the tree anchor the composition in the Golden Section.

The more often the '3 Basics' are repeated, the better the composition, and the more likely a story will unfold from it. The shot was intuitive, but afterwards in my studio I chose this shot over others because it combined most beautifully the 'what' and the 'how.' in other words, the technique, medium, composition, colour, etc and the story were in balance.

As a writer conveys their experience through a vocabulary of words, the visual artist uses form, line, colour, light, darkness and the '3 Basics.'

This is how I used the "3 Basics" to tell this story…

A key element in "Daydream" is the tree. Not only is it a beautiful echo of the masts of the ship and the supports for the fence, it is a visual device that suggests a separation between two worlds: the natural material world and the soul/spiritual world. This leads us to the central theme; our feeling of separation from the soul/spiritual and our longing to return to it.

Tightly bounded by a tree and the left edge of the image area, squeezed into their physical bodies, a couple sit on a bench under a tree [green=the dead image of life] gazing toward a ghostly ship and an open sea. The ship carries its passengers across the blue water [Blue=the lustre of the soul] to the spiritual world beyond. [white=the soul image of the spirit] She wears a black coat with red trim. [Black=The spiritual image of death] [Red=The lustre of the living]

Is she removing the coat or is she putting it on? -LY

Nothing too wild, just a shot of my neighborhood sky tonight. This was spur of the moment, but I like the way the tree anchors the moving clouds. Shooting after dark is a challenge for this camera, particularly at an ISO / EV gain necessary to minimize (although not entirely eliminate) star trailing. I guess I need to start using the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer 2i Pro that I bought a year and half ago (but have never used)...

Early morning pasture before cows were let out. Many historic farms along this stretch of the Sakonnet River in RI. I liked the way the 3 trees anchor the stone wall corner and early morning light. Post processing done in Lightroom. Comments appreciated. Thanks

Here are more red and yellow tulips in the media between the parking lot of Nanina's In the Park and the entrance to it.

Nanina's In the Park is tucked in a small triangle between a railroad track and Franklin Avenue in Belleville, New Jersey.

I think the white-barked tree anchoring the median flower garden is a birch.

* The fungi in this picture represents the trophic level of decomposition. These organisms are food-limited (degrade organic material).

* I think the most influential species at the location is that of the different tree species. They provide not only a habitat for birds, squirrels, etc. but they also provide shade for other nearby species as well as berries and seeds used as a food source for many animals. The trees anchor into the soil and helps with water irrigation and the absorption of nutrients. If the trees were removed, species such as birds would be force to migrate to another area in which they can find food and a habitat in which they can live. With removal of the tree species, biodiversity would decrease and the area would become more of an open field. If the trees were replaced with an invasive species, the overall diversity of the area would decrease. Species such as birds and squirrels might not be able to find a home in the invasive species. This would decrease the overall dispersal of seeds by the birds which would decrease the germination of new plants in the area. Eventually, the invasive species would take over the area, being a large competitor for nutrients and sunlight in comparison to other plant species.

Three organisms & What they are limited by:

1) Common Grackle - Herbivore, predator-limited

2) Ohio Buckeye- Producer, limited by own exhaustion of a resource (ex. light)

3) Squirrels - Omnivores, predator-limited and territory & resource limited (mix of herbivore and carnivore)

These shots were taken for a brochure on a Leadership Course being offered at Charleston Southern University. The layout calls for the two students photos to be on opposing sides of the 2-page spread, leading in to the spread. The inner edge of each photo will be faded or blurred to white, with the tree anchoring the edge of the page.

Strobist: bare Gemini 4700 on 1/4 power with warming gel at camera right 45/45; bare Sunpak 383 Super, gobo'd, at camera left, level & slightly behind subject.

Since we were bleeding out the side of the photo, I let much of the background blow out to white. In retrospect, I wish I had upped my front strobe to 1/2 and stopped down some more to give the lake more interest.

This massive old anchor is part of a large fountain complex in Saint Pedro de Alcántara, and is one of a number of anchors in the complex that have undergone a mid-life career change.

Stonehead Croft is in the centre of the photo, behind the belt of trees anchored by houses at each end. The croft house itself is not visible.

3-shot HDR created with Oloneo Photoengine. I tried to use Photomatix, but it simply could not handle this image. Out of around 20 shots of these clouds, this was the only one with a tree in the frame. It is easily my favorite because the tree anchors this shot perfectly.

Detail from one of the tree anchors that hold together the capilano skyway

Traisping around Hocking Hills, especially around Old Man's Cave, we noticed how the trees anchored themselves into the sides of the gorge with gnarly, muscular-like roots. This weave of roots uprooted caught my eye and reminding me of how I'm rooted in life even with the twists and turns of life.

this town is deserted, when i arrived the fog had become so dense that all my garments were soaked, there was an amazing ambience about this town where the sea lions barked and the fog horns blew, i decided to follow the sounds and ended up enveloped in fog on an abandoned port, absolutely indistinguishable from a dream

I went out before sunrise today to photograph Bald Cypress trees anchored in snow and ice. It was 17 degrees (f, -8c) and foggy in spots. Hoar frost developed where the fog lay, and I found a snow covered field in which every branch was covered in ice crystals.

This illustration by Robert Dionne is part of the 1777 American Revolutionary War series, it captures the harsh winter conditions by the monochromatic color palette painted in the background. The America Sycamore tree anchors and stretches across the canvas creating a encompassing design element for the composition. The warm color tones used to the patriot shooting his musket make him pop forward against those mellow cool background colors. This illustration resembles the classic N.C. Wyeth style.

This is best viewed in Large or Original - it makes a big difference!

bridget and i went on an adventure.

we each bought a disposable camera and took random pictures. when we got the pictures developed, we saw what the other had caught while we were looking at something else.

This wild fig tree has anchored itself well to withstand the Cape southeaster.

Sandhill Cranes in-flight

While not a close in-flight shot I like how the OOF trees anchor the birds in their environment.
