BC released the first set of data resulting from new measures to track the extent of foreign real estate transactions.

 

The data is drawn from the filings of Property Transfer Tax forms by purchasers of residential real estate in British Columbia between June 10 and June 29, 2016. The data represents a first, early look at the rate and value of purchases of residential property by foreign nationals—people who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents.

This is Marq, 46, born in Hackney, living in Islington, hustling in Shoreditch. Marq approached me on Brick Lane about a potential ‘business’ transaction that I politely declined, but ended up befriending him for the night in the process. I have a standing policy that in terms of the 100 Strangers project, I will not photograph homeless people, drug addicts, or the likes. I think it is total exploitation, not to mention patronizing to stick a camera in the face of one of these people, without even really getting to know them, and take a picture so the Flickr and Facebook community can gawk at them with what I call ‘drive by’ compassion before moving on to update their status’ about their latest worthless purchase or experience. My personal opinion is that photography of this demographic has a time and place, but I do not think this project is one of them.

 

However, I breach this policy in the case of Marq, for reasons that should be appearant by the end of this write-up. It’s debatable whether the story about his living situation is true (claiming he had a nice flat in Islington) but he did confirm he was addicted to crack among other vices. When I met Marq, I told him exactly what I was doing. He asked if I would take his picture, but I told him no, at which point, as a consolation, he invited himself to follow me for the next 3 hours I was out taking pics. Throughout the night, Marq offered me his life story, while harassing/bothering the people I was shooting and ruining a few good shots along the way. But, it was all in innocent fun, as I think he was moreso just enjoying the interaction with people. After all, Marq considered himself a salesman, and was using the opportunity, pitching his product to these people that repeatedly turned him down, although he made a point to let me know, all sales proceeds would go directly to his kids, in an almost innocent act of justification.

 

Marq’s story isn’t unlike many I’ve heard: decent upbringing, job, house, relationship with multiple women, children with all of them, a trigger point, drug addiction, out of work, sleeping rough. I don’t want to generalize his story and life as a novelty, but it’s interesting how predictable the arc, or in this case, cycle, of someone’s life becomes when they become addicted to drugs. As they relay it to you, you can almost tell them what happens next, instead of them telling you. As the night progressed, he kept asking me to take his photo, posing in some cases even when I didn’t have the camera in my hands. He kept doing silly stuff and going, ‘Jon, take this shot mate, take this one...’ or running up to people and saying, ‘Jon right here, take a photo of me with these people, send it to me on Facebook.’ But after a while his mood seemed to come down.....at one point a tear strolled down his cheek and his tone became very somber. He asked me again, politely, if I would photograph him. I thought for a second, and without saying anything, raised my camera, and shot this in one take.

 

After spending 3 hours with me, walking around Shoreditch on a cold, relatively lonely November night, I felt I owed it to Marq to tell at least a bit of his story and our interaction. I assumed Marq’s companionship for the evening would end up as a request for money, but it didn’t. As I went to wrap up my night, I offered Marq a customary fist-bump, but he bypassed it completely, came in for a hug, and told me to take care and that he would see me around. I hugged him back, and told him the same. This serene moment turned comedic very quickly as right before I headed underground I heard Marq scream, ‘Yo Jon....hit me up on Facebook mate!’

 

Marq, if you ever see this, you are the ultimate salesman. You ended up selling my own project back to me, convincing me on why I should take a photo of you, instead of the other way around. If you can/will ever clean yourself up, you’d make a killing as a salesman.

In the immortal words of Rocky and Bullwinkle, "and now, time for something different".

 

Many, many, many months ago, I was at Square One waiting for a transaction meet up (for the Fate prize figure, in case you were wondering) and as I usually am prone to do I wandered into the Disney Store.

 

Disney merch is kind of a mixed bag. For sure it's a place where they gouge you, but there can be some neat surprises there - exclusive surprises, I might add. I actually do like some of the sculpts on their larger dolls, but they don't quite fit anywhere in my collection.

 

During this particular trip, I happened across the Avengers line from the new Disney Toybox collection, which are of course kid-ified action figures of various Disney properties, like something out of Kingdom Hearts. It's almost like Disney repurposed the Infinity designed team.

 

Naturally, I gravitated towards Black Widow.

 

Opening up the figure, I offer up the following observations.

 

First off, for whatever reason (I'm guessing budget.. again), Widow does not have her comic style yellow belt, as advertised on the back of the box. Who knows.. maybe yellow paint costs more due to multiple layers.. I dunno. Overall, this figure seems to be inspired by a combination of all her appearances, ranging from the red short hair (Avengers), black body suit (Age of Ultron/Civil War), yellow bracelets (comic), and her weapon (Infinity War).

 

The actual figure itself has a decent amount of articulation. It's no Figma, but it's much better than what I grew up with. Pretty much the figure is ball joints all around. No waist, ab, or neck post movement, or tilting ankles.

 

Kind of light on the accessories, basically consisting of the figure and her weapon.

 

Her quarterstaff can be segmented and dual wielded and for some reason, seem more in scale with this figure than the Figuarts version was. Or maybe I just girls with big sticks.

 

Yes, interpret that as you must.

 

The sticks are designed in such a way that I suspect has to do with child safety laws (the staff splits in half, and the handle comes off the sticks as well), which allows for a neat holstered mode on her back. It's just that, as one would suspect, the QC is kind of crap and as a result things tend to fall apart very easily... yet I still managed to not lose this thing.

 

The sculpting is quite nice - simplistic but still portraying the character quite well and as mentioned above, very reminiscent of the Infinity series figure. The body is functional, though perhaps due to the smaller size the joints aren't as unsightly as its Marvel Legends counterparts. Production didn't leave an unacceptable number of poor finishes on the plastic.

 

The paint is... not bad. The body paint apps are actually pretty sharp, but it's not like there's a whole lot to actually do on the figure. Face paint apps are a mixture of "pretty good" and "dollar store", so in other words pretty typical for a Disney toy.

 

So is this something that I'd collect the whole line of? Not personally, but this isn't really my niche, as it were.

 

I think kids with connections to the various properties will dig these, though Lord have mercy upon the souls of the poor parents, as these are about $19 here in Ontario after taxes. I'm crossing my fingers that my kids don't have a Disney fetish.. so far, so good.

 

As an adult collector though with a desire to collect North American toys, it's a tough call. The Marvel Legends stuff is definitely larger and comes with more accessories and maybe more articulation, but it seems the final product is cleaner on these toys. Having said that, you're never going to get the full line up from Disney, nor are you going to get the "grown up" look, so at the end of the day, it's probably going to be a supplemental line.

After a successful run in the art gallery, Pandora settled at 544 Haight St. (That space, now Trunk, is still going strong.) Pandora is embracing her mercurial nature and flitting from place to place, gathering in lovers and haters alike in SoMa, the Mission, Castro, Noe, Potrero... maybe down the street from your house?

 

Rachel is the captain of this uneven ship, having spent years making magical things happen in theatres across the country. After producing music and performance-oriented events in the Bay Area, she wanted more. Washington, D.C. – With the latest showdown over the government shutdown and debt limit finally over and the next budget fight beginning, a coalition of healthcare, community, faith-based, and labor activists will call on Congress members Wednesday, October 30 to shift the tone from austerity budget cuts to expanding revenues with a small tax on Wall Street speculation that can bring hundreds of billions of dollars into the budget to help rebuild our economy.

 

The Robin Hood Tax campaign, endorsed by more than 160 local and national organizations, will precede the lobby effort with march to the Capitol, and a briefing for members of Congress and the media. World renown economist Jeffrey Sachs and Anni Podimata, political leader from Greece, vice president of the European Parliament, where 11 nations are implementing a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) to spur European economies, will be featured speakers at the briefing.

Occupy Wall Street and a coalition of unions and community groups marked Occupy's 2nd anniversary on September 17, 2013 with teach-ins and a march and rally in New York. Protesters demanded a tax on Wall Street stock trades - a "Robin Hood" tax - to fund the fight against AIDS and other health and education needs in the US and internationally. After a morning of speeches in Zuccotti Park near Wall Street, about 1000 people gathered in Dag Hammarskjold park near the UN and took a meandering course through mid-town to Bryant Park for a final rally and concert by the a capella activist singers Sweet Honey In The Rock.

In July 2013 Carey Watermark Investors Inc. purchased a 75% joint venture interest in the 226-room Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn resort from Fairmont Hotels & Resorts in a transaction valued at an aggregate $82 million: $76.6 million purchase price plus $5.4 million in renovations and acquisition cost.

 

CWI's interest in the joint venture is 75 percent while Fairmont will retain a 25 percent ownership interest. The joint venture's total investment in the property is approximately $97.1 million, which was financed with $44 million of debt. CWI's investment is approximately $73.3 million, including its allocated portion of debt. The first phase of an approximate $10.7 million renovation is nearing completion and includes the updating of all Heritage Rooms, a complete redesign of the lobby and fine dining room, Sante, as well as the creation of a new lobby bar. Additional work is planned over the next two years including the spa.

The transaction comes just over one year after Fairmont acquired the remaining stake in the Mission Inn from Crescent Real Estate Equities L.P. Fairmont has been hotel's management since 2002, when the company acquired a 19.9% ownership position in the property and took over management.

Crescent Real Estate Equities, an investment trust, bought the property in 1996. Crescent defaulted on a $55 million loan in 2011. The resort was scheduled for a foreclosure auction in Santa Rosa in January, 2012 but was pulled from the sale by lenders. Fairmont Hotels acquired full ownership of the Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, at an undisclosed price. The resort was reportedly listed for $100 million. Jennifer Fox, Fairmont President said “We believe the timing is right to support strategic acquisition opportunities and fund future growth of our brand.”

 

Rick Corcoran's is the current General Manager at Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. He previously was the Hotel Manager at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and the Director of Food and Beverage at Fairmont San Francisco.
