Bethnal Green Road on a wet Boxing Day 2012.
The romantic fantasy is of a snow-covered city at Christmas time. This is the reality - if London does get snow it is more likely to be in February than December.
50 years ago though, a cold front brought four inches of snow to London on Boxing Day 1962, heralding one of the coldest winters London has experienced in living memory. The Big Freeze continued until early March.

To dispel the winter gloom, I've uploaded some photos taken earlier this year of the colourful Sunday flower market in Columbia Road, Bethnal Green.
A quiet street of Victorian houses during the week, Columbia Road comes alive on Sundays when the flower market takes over between 8am and 2pm. Many of the small shops also open on the day, adding to the atmosphere which also spills over into adjoining streets. It's very busy, so go early to avoid the crowds - or late to seek out bargains.

Early January saw most of Britain covered in snow. Inner London got off lightly compared with most areas but there was still a reasonable dusting in Bethnal Green on the evening of 6th January.

Hoardings around a building site at the Shoreditch end of Bethnal Green Road are being used for temporary art projects. A set with a would cup theme is currently under way.

I'm guessing Ginger has gone to that great cat-basket in the sky .....
Paradise Row dates from 1800, although many of the houses have been substantially altered. The houses on the right are actually new-build, but in suitably-fitting style.
A National Express East Anglia class 321 unit heads across the Regent's Canal towards Liverpool Street. The towers of Canary Wharf can be seen in the background. In the foreground is Meath Bridge, designed to provide a pedestrian and cycle link across the Canal and opened in October 2009.

A three-storey house that has escaped demolition. The surrounding area was cleared and Allen Gardens was created on the site.
