Thyme, mint, strawberries, basil, rosemary, and mums that lived through the winter.

Good thyme. We tried to grow this stuff in the backyard and it didn't take well to Sheba's footprints. So it was replaced with sod the next season.

A favorite saying of my mother was "Time, time, said old King Tut, is something I ain't got nothin' else but." But I was into a different sort of thyme today, thyme that's planted rather than measured, and in two varieties: Thymus Vulgaris (on the left, ordinary thyme, not nearly as vulgar as its Latin name suggests) and Thymus Citriodorus Aureus (thyme that has a slightly lemonly edge). This thymely couple is handily planted just outside our kitchen door.

I'm so glad this little one made it through the winter! I love how it looked washed in morning dew.

Photographed at the Wenas Wildlife Area on the north slope of Cleman Mountain, Yakima County, Washington. Access is via Newland Road and the road that goes to the top of Cleman Mountain on the west side of Burn Canyon. The roads in this area are very rough. IMG_9478
