Dunnotar Castle looks like the background from Game of thrones, You expect a few Dragons to sweep by any minute

The centerpiece of the "Minoan" palace was the so-called Throne Room or Little Throne Room, dated to LM II. This chamber has an alabaster seat identified by Evans as a "throne" built into the north wall. On three sides of the room are gypsum benches. A sort of tub area is opposite the throne, behind the benches, termed a lustral basin, which means that Evans and his team saw it as a place for ceremonial purification.

The room was accessed from an anteroom through double doors. The anteroom was connected to the central court, which was four steps up through four doors. The anteroom had gypsum benches also, with carbonized remains between two of them thought possibly, to be a wooden throne. Both rooms are located in the ceremonial complex on the west of the central court.

The throne is flanked by the Griffin Fresco, with two griffins couchant (lying down) facing the throne, one on either side. Griffins were important mythological creatures, also appearing on seal rings, which were used to stamp the identities of the bearers into pliable material, such as clay or wax.

The actual use of the room and the throne is unclear.

The two main theories are as follows:

The seat of a priest-king or a queen. This is the older theory, originating with Evans. In that regard Matz speaks of the "heraldic arrangement" of the griffins, meaning that they are more formal and monumental than previous Minoan decorative styles. In this theory, the Mycenaeans would have held court in this room, as they came to power in Knossos at about 1,450. The "lustral basin" and the location of the room in a sanctuary complex cannot be ignored; hence, "priest-king."

A room reserved for the epiphany of a goddess, who would have sat in the throne, either in effigy, or in the person of a priestess, or in imagination only. In that case the griffins would have been purely a symbol of divinity rather than a heraldic motif.

Additional speculation is, since the indentation of the seat seems to be shaped for a woman's buttocks, that the throne was made specifically for a female individual. Also, the extensive use of curved edges and the crescent moon carved at its base both symbolize femininity.

The lustral basin was originally thought to have had a ritual washing use, but the lack of drainage has more recently brought some scholars to doubt this theory. It is now speculated that the tank was used as an aquarium, or possibly a water reservoir.

One of favorite places in the badlands. I have been there enough times I no longer need a gps to find it.

That's a good thing, because both our gps go nuts in this area. They give you the direction, than in just seconds it reverses 180 degrees. I know that's hard to believe, but it happened. I have heard the more expensive gps don't have the problem.

A Gull sitting high and mighty in its Throne :) Cheers everyone.

The Michodai (御帳台) is the August Seat of the Empress. The current throne was constructed in 1913. Its colour and shape are the same as the Takamikura, but is slightly smaller and more simple in comparison. The canopy is decorated with a statue of the mythical bird rancho.

The imperial throne is always placed in the centre of the main hall, the michodai to the right of it. Both thrones are kept away from public view through screens called misu. (Wikipedia)

Bryce Canyon National Park is a fascinating place. The eroded layers have exposed the greatest concentration of hoodoos on Earth. Returning from chasing the solar eclipse elsewhere in Utah, we stopped by Bryce Canyon to stretch our legs and eat lunch. Mid-day on a sunny day generally is not known to be the best time for landscape photography as the light can be harsh and at a high angle. But Bryce has a special trick up its sleeve. This landscape is essentially a bouncy castle for light. With a long lens especially you can find interesting compositions where the shadow side of the spectacular canyons are illuminated by light bouncing off of nearby hoodoos and canyon walls to wondrous effect. Here I was captivated by this pine tree, which seemed to be upon its own massive throne. I made numerous attempts at compositions, and only after a few months of distance and generous cropping which sacrificed fully half the resolution, I found this that I am pretty happy with. Bathed in warm reflected light, other parts of the canyon behind drop into shadow. The scale seems almost miniature until I remind myself that this tree is probably 30 to 40 feet tall.

My way of sharing the love that is game of thrones, it is an adult program and it does not pull any punches , these are a few of my fav characters ,it's taken most of my collection to put this together, it is all genuine Lego apart from a couple of swords and a pair of mini legs. all heads are Lego ( believe it or not ) so let the quotes begin because " winter is coming "

Coronation Throne of Norbugang signifies the place where crowning of the first Chogyal king - Phuntsog Namgyal took place in the year 1642. The Coronation throne, which has the "appearance of an old Olympic Medal Podium" is made of stones, which has been white washed now. The stone throne has four seats, with the top one intended for Lama Lhatsun Chhempo. The coronation took place under the pine tree, which is still present today.

Alien Throne stands in the Valley of Dreams, a remote field of hoodoos on Navajo Nation land in the northwestern New Mexico badlands. It’s filled with petrified wood — even petrified trunks and branches — and is rich with fossils. It’s just outside the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness, where paleontologists discovered not the Triceratops, but the Pentaceratops. Alien Throne is a hoodoo. They’re formed by erosive forces like wind, rain, and flowing water beating away at stacked layers of soft and hard rock. The softer layers wear down relatively quickly, but the harder layers resist for longer — eventually, we’re left with impossible shapes. Hoodoos tend to have hard “cap rocks” on top, which protect the soft layers, and alien features, below.

This picture stems from an unexpected discovery at the Pose Me Amazing event. I went pose shopping (as my linden balance will tell you, that's something I do pretty often) and somehow found myself in a dark abbey. Inside was a throne that reminded me of Game of Thrones. Inspired, I dug out my Diesel crown (from their current group gift) and changed into my red gown and pretended I was Queen Cersei. Only then did I notice the dead bodies all around...

TP to Pose Me Amazing and take a short walk to the Abbey to see this for yourself
