In the begining of this year, my second upload was that of a different composition of this same scene. I had a really hard time deciding which one to choose, and spent the whole year second guessing my decision. So now, I thought it would be appropriate to show, as my second to last upload of the year, this second composition, which includes the second bird. And before I take one more second of your time, let me wish you, my friends, and your families, a very happy Christmas!!
Oh, and on a second note: I've just entered Instagram, which is allowing me a very different take on photography, so, if you are there too, I'd be thrilled if you add me there!
I thought I could just keep going. Get through day after day..
Turns out it doesn't quite work that way.
So now I'm stepping down, breathing and letting myself recover.
Sometimes you get the most amazing inspiration when you're bored.
I might delete this later. It's more of a personal shot than photography

I really thought it was going to be a bust at the lake today cause of the lousy weather. But we saw 3 or 4 Ospreys, a juvenile Bald Eagle (maybe two), about 3 Caspian Terns, and a bunch of Belted Kingfishers. The Kingfishers are heavily cropped, I was disappointed a little cause I was experimenting with slower shutter speeds today (don't ask) thinking I wouldn't see much, but I had a lot of shots ruined because of slow shutter speed and bad exposures. Oh well, it's always nice to experiment a little...
This is the mama American Alligator that has done such a good job protecting last summer's hatchlings that at least 7 and maybe as many as 10 are beating the odds and still thriving on Horsepen Bayou. I call her Dolly because she was (and perhaps still is) the mate of the bruiser I call Big Boy, both named for coloring book characters from the Shoney's Restaurant of my youth in Tennessee. I first took notice of Dolly around 10 years ago, at which time she was already more than 9 feet long, exceptionally large for a female gator. Given their slow rate of growth once they hit the 6-foot mark, she could easily be 30 years old by now, maybe older. While she seems fairly tolerant of people, she is somewhat battle-scarred and I'm guessing any of the neighborhood bulls who might be interested in taking one of her offspring has learned not to mess with her.
Here, she is waving for the attention of the young'uns, signalling them to watch and learn.
I have uploaded rather a lot of Polar Bear photo but I don't want to consign these to the bin as I am unlikely to get such photo-opportunities again. A number of people have alluded to the rule changes that come into force in in Svalbard in 2025 that will make photos like this very difficult. From March 1st until June 30th boats will not be permitted within 500m of a Polar Bear, though from July 1st until February 28th this distance drops to 300m. Polar Bears vary in their reaction to people and boats, but many are curious and will walk right up to a stationary boat in the pack ice. But the new rules say that boats should move away if Polar Bears approach to maintain the regulation distance.
We would not have approached this bear quite as close as this if we had spotted him earlier. But we were in a Zodiac cruising the coast and as we turned a blind rocky headland there he was, right in front of us. We did move back to a safer distance but initially I could not get the entire animal in frame. Needless to say, I was not operating the Zodiac. I was just seizing the opportunity to take close photographs. For the record I had 700mm on a full frame camera (500mm with 1.4x converter) and this was slightly cropped to centre it. It was taken on the east coast of the island of Spitsbergen at Bjornsund.

1. Die Gedanken sind frei, wer kann sie erraten,
Sie fliegen vorbei wie nächtliche Schatten.
Kein Mensch kann sie wissen, kein Jäger erschießen
Mit Pulver und Blei: Die Gedanken sind frei!
2. Ich denke was ich will und was mich beglücket,

1. Thoughts are free, who can guess them?
They fly by like nocturnal shadows.
No man can know them, no hunter can shoot them,
With powder and lead: Thoughts are free!
2. I think what I want, and what delights me,
But all in the silence, and just how it is
My wish and desire, no one can deny me
And so it will always be: Thoughts are free!
3. I love wine, and my girl even more,
Only I like her best of all.
I'm not alone with my glass of wine,
My girl is with me: Thoughts are free!
4. And if I am thrown into the darkest dungeon,
All this would be useless,
Because my thoughts will tear all gates
And walls apart: Thoughts are free!
(5) So I will renounce my sorrows forever,
And never again torture myself with some fancy ideas.
In one's heart, one can always laugh and joke
And think at the same time: Thoughts are free!

LOVE YOU STILL…
Far apart yet of one heart,
you are miles away yet it feels like I saw you today,
the thought of you fill my head
as I lay on my bed
and until time stand still
I will love you still.
Sweet night…

I thought this stump in the Gaudineer Knob Scenic Area in West Virginia looked a lot like Weathertop in the Lord of the Rings.

I heat up and I, I can't come down
I swear I'm spinning I'm on a merry go round
And I picked up a joy to my face
My heart beats faster than the regular pace and
I'm not sure of what it is
I asked my mother to help me with it
And she said daughter you've reached a jones
And that's pure loving so carry on
Come to my place
You know I'll be waiting for you
Cause I really need you so
You know I'll be waiting for you
Be on your way
You know I'll be waiting for you
And we can handle it real slow
You know I'll be waiting for you
You keep me thirsty licking my lips
I'm hungry for you to please my hips
And don't stop there prepare to sweat
I'm getting hotter and you ain't made it here yet
So won't you hurry make no haste
Cause you're the fruit I, I long to taste
And just in case I start before you reach me first
I've unlatched the door
There's no greater mystery behind the power of positive thinking. If we assume before the fact that we can't accomplish something, we almost certainly won't. If we believe that we can, we are much more likely to succeed. At least we'll make the effort.
We talk ourselves out of interesting opportunities all the time - when we ought to be talking ourselves INTO them.
