Confronting the contradictions of our times .

One of the important contradictions faced by the people of our times is the spectre of fascism. The right, in ourcontext, is the communal fascism (like the Sangh Parivar) and the Congress party which unleash right_wing nee-liberal onslaught on the people. The present and the past elected governments (both Congress and BJP) have beenpursuing a right wing model of development (coerced by imperialist powers) which have ruined the peasants, workers, women, dalits, adivasis and other marginalized ethnic groups and nationalities. Their economic agendahave been similar despite their 'different' ideologies. The ABVP and NSUI on campus are the harbingers of thispolitics. We call upon the JNU community to give a fitting rebuffto these parties in the coming JNUSU election. .

In order to defeat the threat posed by the fascist forces at the national level, the political orientation of themainstream left has been concentrated merely in terms of gaining electoral victory by making alliances withother so-called secular forces at the cost ofclass politics. In the process ofthis desperate attempt at containing the.

fundamentalist forces, the 'lefi alternatives' have foregone the necessity to deal with these forces at more acute.

levels of social, economic, cultural and political bases. Such alliances and political tactics can only serve astemporary arrangements rather than offering a concrete and conclusive solution against this expanding casteist, religious, and patriarchal social base of hindutva forces. This is high time that we start engaging critically withthese questions, to defeat the opportunist impulses that trivialise these problems in the name ofcommunalism. The.

reflection of the same can be seen through the political trajectory of students' politics in JNU since more than adecade. Even though ABVP in the campus has been tamed by the left in the electoral front, the political.

culture that defines them is on the rise. .

A broader call for left solidarity on campus, however, should not blind us from the alternative that has been proposedin practice by the parliamentary left on campus that is SFI-AISF and AISA. While the SFI-AISF (CPI and CPI[M])have revised the Das Capital to convert it into a manual for fast capital, their so-called counterpart AISA (CPI[ML].

Liberation)· is solaced through the path of abstracted postmodernist prophecy -.

'history will not spare anyone'.Thus we are confronting a soci.alistic-bourgeoisie which tries to fight oppression without sincerely undertaking a.

programme of class struggle and instead, takes recourse to legalistic micro relief provided to the oppressed. We stillremember that in 1996 all left trade unions (including RSS backed BMS), opposed the 'Social Clause', vigorouslyasserting that it would hurt Indian industrialists. This clearly is an indication of their solidarity with the so-called.

national bourgeoisie (if it exists anymore), backed by the Indian State, at the cost of working class interests. Only a.

few left groups all over the world, including Communist League of India (Marxist-Leninist) were ready to have acritical engagement with the proposal in the interest of the working class without compromising its political battle.

. against imperialist forces. The ironies of the left don't end here. The mainstream, parliamentary left opposed thedenial of visa to Narendra Modi by USA, in the name of honouring ·national sovereignty'. While doing so, theyhappily forgot that it was not the Bush administration but the collective struggles ofthe Indian and other South Asianpeople in USA which had led to the denial. .

While shouting slogans against imperialist invasions, be it Afghanistan or Iraq, and showing solidarity for national.

liberation movements in other parts of the world, like Palestine, they maintain a conspicuous silence over themovements for people'.

s right to self determination in the North-East. So, we see two extremes -parliamentaryleft stands in denial of the validity of these movements as genuine people's demand for separate nationhoodwhereas, the ':ultra' left fails to have any critical assessment of the inherent contradictions wi!hin the processof nation-making, meanwhile supporting these movements for the sake ofit, at times going to the extent of aligningwith religious fascist groups. This demands us to address the issues and create a democratic space to reformulate ourpositions as well as our understanding of not only the movements for nationhood but also to prevent ourselves fromfalling into the same pitfall. .

Notwithstanding the right's opportunism and excellence in exploiting regressive social structures like caste and.

patriarchy, the left has categorically been unable to perceive the struggles against these structures as necessary .
