Triumph of Christian Religion
Tommaso Laureti
Vatican Museum
The wooden ceiling that Leo X (pontiff from 1513 to 1521)had built was replaced in the time of Gregory XIII with a ceiling that was decorated with frescoes. The task was entrusted to the Sicilian painter Tommaso Laureti who began the work in 1582, completing it in 1585 under Pope Sixtus V (pontiff from 1585 to 1590). In the corners of the ceiling the undertakings of Gregory XIII are depicted while in the frieze above the four episodes of the life of Constantine, we see the heraldic elements of Sixtus V. In the central panel Laureti illustrated the Triumph of Christian religion that refers to the destruction of the pagan idols and their replacement with the image of Christ, ordered by Constantine throughout the empire. Around the central panel the artist painted eight regions of Italy, two in each of the four pendentives, and three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa.
Dr Milley's Hospital on Beacon Street, Lichfield, England.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DR. MILLEY'S HOSPITAL, LICHFIELD
The almshouse in Lichfield now known as Dr.Milley's Hospital (fn. 1) seems to have been founded onproperty given by Bishop Heyworth in 1424 for theuse of the poor. (fn. 2) The bishop's grant makes nomention of the foundation of a hospital, but twocircumstances suggest that Dr. Milley's Hospitaldid originate in the bishop's benefaction and that itwas therefore founded about 1424. First, Heyworthgave the property to the cathedral sacrist and themaster of St. Mary's Guild, and until recent yearsthe sacrist has always had a special responsibility forDr. Milley's Hospital. (fn. 3) Secondly, the property onwhich the hospital now stands — a long narrowpiece of land running back from Beacon Street andcurving south to the Leamonsley Brook (fn. 4) — isalmost certainly that which Heyworth gave in 1424.The ground seems once to have been a ditch whichformed the town defences between the north-westcorner of the fortified Close and the bishop'sfishponds. (fn. 5) The ground floor of Dr. Milley'sHospital is now well below the level of BeaconStreet, and this is undoubtedly due in part to itssituation in the town ditch.
Lots more history here....
It rained on us for about 10 minutes. No Phones so we had to do selfies with the camera timer...just like the old days :)
The Doctors' companions arrive to help them defend the TARDIS against the Master. However, the Master has also invited some associates.
The decaying Master, as seen in the 1976 "Dr Who" story 'The Deadly Assassin.'
As deliciously gruesome as he is, I intend to modify him and add him to my 'Walking Dead' zombie horde.
The Master: Surrender Doctors! I and my "allies" here will not harm you as long as you cooperate!We simply need 5 more Time Lords to open the Gate of Rassilon, help us and you shall be returned to your own eras. You can trust me! To kill your past incarnations would disturb the Web of Time, and threaten my own personal history.Even I am not that foolish, am I Doctor?
10th Doctor: The Master! I should've known you were behind this! Only another Time Lord would have the knoweldge to pull all of us out of our respective timestreams - and you're the only other one of us left!
9th Doctor: The Master? That can't be the Master! I've never seen this version before and he was killed when he fell into the Eye of Harmony. I'M the last of the Time Lords! I'd know if there was another!
6th Doctor: I agree with Big Ears over there, it's clearly impossible that this fellow can be who he claims to be, quite impossible!
4th Doctor: Quite! Where's your beard, eh? You can't very well run around calling yourself the Master without a beard, now can you?
5th Doctor: His hair isn't even black!
The Master:ENOUGH! I AM THE MASTER, AND YOU WILL OBEY ME! Ugh! The only thing worse than dealing with your insufferable ego is having to deal with it 5 times over!
More NEW TOYS! Finally a new sculpt of David Tennant just in time for his reign as the Doctor to end. ;) STILL couldn't give him the upper arm articulation, though. Still, I love the roughed-up little guy. And, well, the Master...what can I say? He's all badass and scruffy!!
My love bought me the Master, and I bought the Doctor, and he brought them both over with him for me. They didn't destroy the innards of his case, luckily, though, there were bite marks in the chocolates, and telltale chocolate smears all over the Master's face and fingers.
BOOGIE NIGHTS writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson remains one of cinema’s maverick filmmakers and so his upcoming project, an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel INHERENT VICE, is sure to be another hit with audiences as well as critics. The film reunites him with THE ...
Could 2015 finally see the brilliant writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson score that elusive “Best Director” Oscar? Given INHERENT VICE is a dark crime comedy, based on the bonkers best-selling novel by Thomas Pynchon, probably suggests not. Still, we’re eager to see his...
Charles the Great (Charlemagne) began the construction of the Palatine Chapel around 792, along with the building of the rest of the palace structures.
I was lucky that there was a break in the rain and the clouds as the sun began to set. It was the most beautiful glow cast upon the cathedral.
St. Peter's Basilica (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri; Italian: Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano) is a Late Renaissance church located within Vatican City.
Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world. While it is neither the mother church of the Catholic Church nor the Catholic Roman Rite cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom".
By Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, also according to tradition, the first Pope and Bishop of Rome. Tradition and strong historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica.
