Happy Mother's Day!
We had an unusual late April snowstorm this year in Oregon. One of my friends had been watching a hummingbird's nest in her yard with two babies. Snow covered the area, and tree limbs were crashing around. Judy's husband put up some foam board to help protect the babies, but of coursel, it was their Momma that these babies depended on. They survived and are now flying about the garden.
My own Mom passed away almost three years ago, but well I remember all the times she came to my rescue, and kept me warm and healthy when the world seemed stormy.
Did you know that female hummingbirds spend about a week building their nests, using a spider web base to attach it to a branch, insulating it with soft plants, and camouflaging it with lichens?

One of the downsides to doing so many reviews is that it is often difficult to use up sketchbooks I've started. I reviewed one of Mary Roff's handmade watercolor sketchbook back in 2019, and even though I decided I was going to make a project of painting sheep in it, I'm only 10 pages in.
That's a shame - it a fabulous book, wonderful to paint in. I look forward to finishing mine.

Did you know that wombats, and many other nocturnal animals and birds are bioluminescent -- they glow under UV light? Scientists accidentally discovered that the platypus was bioluminescent a few years ago. Curious, they began looking for more glowy mammals. Most of the research so far has been done in Australia, as the animals identified show - wombats, tasmanian devils, springhares, Australian opossums, flying foxes, microbats, and echidnas. Many birds have beaks, talons and eyes that glow. More are being added to the list as time goes on.
