The different methods of potion preparation is today's chapter in the Potions Classroom

But Moleskine journals were prominent in our Sociology books this semester.

The guy who wrote the book would insert his journal entries though the chapter. A lot of them were "written" on Christmas ??? Like, several entries took place on Christmas day in different spots in the world.

Yeah I know I had like nine months to scan an example, but the book had to be sold that day.

Today, we look at something old school - the Rin Tohsaka version 1.0 Figma (coming in at 011), released back in 2008, and taking almost three weeks to arrive from somewhere that is a 4 hour plane ride away.

As always, a bit of background for the unfamiliar... who is Rin Tohsaka?

Simply put, she's who you'd call secondary lead character of Fate/Stay Night, and I believe technically she's the lead of the Unlimited Blade Works arc of Fate/Stay Night. She's definitely a take charge sort of person, and is extremely compete with her servant, Archer, but it's her personality that makes her popular.

Rin, you see, is a textbook example of the term Tsundere. In fact, the only reason I even know OF the term is because of Rin. The term is used to describe a character that starts off a relationship as being cold and standoffish, eventually resulting in a more caring, personal, and often affectionate, relationship.

So as I said.. old school figure. As far as I know, there have only been two Figma of Rin - this one, and the 2.0 from Unlimited Blade Works. The 2.0 was released in 2015, and through again blind luck I had stumbled upon her for cheap I'm going say in 2018 at an 80s toy show... yes, you read that right - 80s toys.

If you've seen my #TeamTsundere photo, you'll notice a third figure. This is a 4inch-Nel, same line as those tiny but articulated Mega Man figures I've shown off. The character there is TECHNICALLY Ishtar from the Fate/Grand Order game, and while I'm a bit confused myself, apparently this is not Rin as a Heroic Spirit has taken over her body. But if you ask the hardcore Rin fans, she counts so in the photo she went.

Being the release for Fate/Stay Night, the Rin 1.0 Figma comes with a few things that are more familiar to me. For starters, she's dressed in red sweater and black skirt hat I remember. Contents of the package include the figure, two total face plates (neutral, yelling), a dedicated left forearm with glyphs on it, two hands with red magic bolts (I believe) in her knuckles, her two weapons Azoth and Zelretch, a variety of posing and gripping hands, and of course the Figma stand.

The payload from the 1.0 is definitely more iconic than the 2.0, which comes with different shoes and the magic blast effect as the main accessories, versus her two weapons. For.. reasons, the 1.0 shouting face has eyes staring off slightly into a corner rather than straight ahead.

Side-by-side with the 2.0 show from a size perspective, they're about the same and even proportions wise, it's not as drastic a change as the Saber 1.0 to 2.0. Strangely the face of the 1.0 seems better designed, as it covers up the neck joint when viewed from the side. The hair received a significant boost in terms of detailing and its black versus brown.

Both figures are able maintain a seamless outfit due to the fact the clothes are a soft plastic layer with body segments contained with, and unconcealed at the back to allow for movement. The 2.0 however, has a more robust upper body as compared to the 1.0

Naturally, the articulation of the 2.0 is superior to the 1.0. The 1.0 has what it takes to get the job done, but you'll find posing the 2.0 to be a more refined experience.

Otherwise, the paint and build quality are up to the standard Figma expectations, but lets face it, they're not exactly priced cheap either so high production standards are expected.

With that, my quick retrospective on the Rin 1.0 Figma is completed. It's as solid a release as one would expect, though naturally adding her to your collection is matter of preference, timing and price.

While I do adore the classic look, ultimately the 2.0 will be the one that looks like it fits in with your Fate collection.
