.... certain terrifying mints spread so rapidly that just the thought of them on a summer night can make your hair stand on end.
For the record I am terrified of lighting. But just love doing lighting shots when I get a chance. 30 seconds of exposure and a whole lot of prayer.

What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow -

Every time I visited Wales, I would see this place during the journey, from afar and always as I gazed at it jutting out from the forest on the hillside, I would wonder what it was like. Finally my curiosity has been quenched after many years of being thirsty :D I wasn't disappointed :)
A fab day out with AlternativeDayOut.
As much as I love the ocean, I don't get in it! Sure, I enjoy walking in the surf, but I draw the line at knee level. I'm not a strong swimmer and the thought of losing touch with the ground beneath me triggers a shiver of existential terror!
This coast is not a region for ocean swimming anyway. Nobody does it except for the occasional oblivious tourist, who won't stay long in the 45-degree water (7 C). Only the rugged surfers in wet suits are sometimes seen in the water, and I admire their courage and strength.
I stand at the edge of this danger and look at the dark sea that could quietly swallow me. For a moment, like in a dream, I seem to grasp the reality of existence that we all share. The ocean teaches deep respect and awe.
Early in the morning I walked along her hightide line and noticed that something was not right...
Her companion the wind was also restless and there was that forboding tension that arises when the two begin to aspire....

Ezekiel 21:7 “When they ask why you are groaning, tell them, ‘I groan because of the terrifying news I have heard. When it comes true, the boldest heart will melt with fear; all strength will disappear. Every spirit will faint; strong knees will become as weak as water. And the Sovereign LORD says: It is coming! It’s on its way!’”
Portknockie harbour, in Morayshire, Scotland, has been getting pummelled the last couple of days by a proper northerly storm. It’s been a while since I’ve seen these conditions up here and it has helped me to remember how much I love being out in them. It really makes you feel alive.

My goodness the way back out was precarious. Michael remains much braver than me so I watched him descending into the darkness with the torch, leaving me alone in the cold, quiet building - terrifying. It was genuinely unpleasant being left, not sure whether I could get out on my own. And yes, I very much struggled.
I was drawn to but also repulsed by the intense gloom of the building. So much life had once been here and now there was just emptiness and destruction. That's really what I wanted to capture here - there is nothing positive about this place; it's dead.

Does the Sahara have a voice?
The wind can speak in terrifying roars, whipping the dunes into a fury. The grasses and trees that grow can be heard whispering among themselves. The grains of sand chitter and hiss if you listen.
But the dunes themselves seem mute, getting our attention instead through infinite spectrums of form and color.
Their imposing peaks, their sinuous curves; there is movement in their stillness, humility in their magnificence. They provide the permanence of a mountain range, but flow like a river, shapeshifting before our very eyes.
The milky, pinky taupe colors of morning seem aloof, preoccupied, while the golden caramels of noon belie a deadly indifference as the sun rises to power. The ripening brilliant oranges of evening tease survival, and the seductive, fiery russet reds after sunset celebrate the coming of night, when the desert reawakens and comes to life.
Eventually, all fades into an endless, inky blackness, keeping the desert's secrets well hidden beneath a tapestry of stars.
Does the Sahara have a voice?
I think the desert speaks to all who will listen, even her silence is a symphony. What is she saying? Perhaps only those born of the desert can truly know. Her lessons are many and man's life but a sigh.

As cubs, brown bears “play fight.” The activities are, at the very least, entertaining and are usually heartwarming and hysterical. They do so to keep themselves busy but these role plays are also preluding to the need for defense as an adult. In mature bears the activities are anything but cute and at times they can be downright terrifying. You might imagine that when a number of bears gather at an estuary of finite size to fish and feed with cubs in tow things can get a bit tense. Cubs are off limits to any other adult bear except their mother. And boars, given the opportunity, are noted to attack and kill young cubs. So, when this young boar, on the left, got just a bit too close to this sow’s cubs there was just a little price to be paid. Despite his greater size, she attacked him and chased him off. #BrownBears
There's something about Lubber Grasshoppers that bothers me more than most other insects. This underside view does not help things.

Since I have started to take bird photography seriously, I have noticed a pattern emerging regarding my encounters with different species of birds. It goes something like this, I will hear about or see a glimpse of a new bird for the first time and will become quite obsessive about it. I will scour ebird species reports, and we will travel to known locations without much luck. I might get some shots but usually not the special ones. Then while driving around or in one of our nearby parks, I will end up seeing the bird I was chasing after casually chilling. So far, this same pattern has happened with barred owls, eastern kingbirds, Cardinals, scissor-tails, orioles, etc.
It happened again last weekend. A couple of years ago, I saw a summer tanager sitting on a fence near our home on an evening walk. First, I dismissed it as a norther cardinal, but then it flew by me, and I noticed that the beak shape was different. Later I checked with ebird and realized it was a summer tanager. I saw one sitting on a distant tree at Holla Bend but only for a few seconds. Then last weekend happened, we decided to go out on a mid-day hike to a hiking trail nearby. We parked our car and started on the path, and suddenly I saw a flash of red, it was a bird, and he landed on a small tree right in front of me. It was a beautiful male summer tanager. I had a partially obstructed view from my position, so I had to move around, and I was terrified that the bird would fly away before I got a decent picture. This trail is a popular one, and the birds here seem to be tolerant of humans. So I was able to get quite close. The excitement of the encounter has still not worn off for me.
TAGGED by Sunchanted! And this is SOOC.
1. I actually like overexposure. Sometimes.
2. I should go to bed, because I have to get up early to take the SAT tomorrow.
3. I took two pictures like this one; my sister hates this one because she dislikes my expression. But I picked this one anyway, because the focus is slightly better. Actually LOOKING closely at this now, I can see what she means. It IS a weird expression.
4. I took this in the garage with the SUPER hot work lamp. In the background you can see the tool box.
5. I went through I phase where I used to HAVE to howl at the moon every single time I caught sight of it, if it was full. Now I still have to repress the urge (it's pretty strong). Sometimes I don't.
6. I tried to take pictures with/of my dog today...major fail. I don't think I have ONE acceptable picture from it. If I find one, I'll put it up.
7. I love the Jurassic Park series (books more, but movies too).
8. I think most dogs smell really good. Mine does for sure.
9. Once my sister and I were lost in the woods, when we were about 6 and 5. She sat down on a stump and started crying. I told her "It's okay, I'll smell my way out!" and I took her hand and lead her through the woods, sniffing trees as I went. Amazingly, I somehow managed to find the house again. I really thought that my "canine nose" saved us...I was convinced I was part dog. (Though I was terrified of wolves back then...now they're my favorite animal.)
10. From the time we were toddlers until...recently, my sister and I have had the simplistic motto: "Never give up, never."
*Can you believe no one thinks I look Native American?! :(
Oh, I'll tag some people tomorrow. Now I REALLY gotta get to bed.
