Times Square, NYC. April/2018

Times Square is a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment center and neighborhood in the Midtown Manhattansection of New York City at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. It stretches from West 42nd to West 47th Streets.[1] Brightly adorned with billboards and advertisements, Times Square is sometimes referred to as "The Crossroads of the World", "The Center of the Universe", "the heart of The Great White Way", and the "heart of the world". One of the world's busiest pedestrian areas, it is also the hub of the Broadway Theater District and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Times Square is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions, drawing an estimated 50 million visitors annually.[11] Approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square daily,[12] many of them tourists,[13] while over 460,000 pedestrians walk through Times Square on its busiest days.

Formerly known as Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the then newly erected Times Building – now One Times Square – the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop which began on December 31, 1907, and continues today, attracting over a million visitors to Times Square every year.

Times Square functions as a town square, but is not a square in the geometric sense of a polygon; it is more of a bowtie shape, with two triangles emanating roughly north and south from 45th Street, where Seventh Avenue intersects Broadway. Broadway runs diagonally, crossing through the horizontal and vertical street grid of Manhattan laid down by the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, and that intersection creates the "bowtie" shape of Times Square

Times Square by night, New York City

Times Square is an almost overwhelming assortment of TVs, neon signs, larger than life advertisements, people, cars and activity. It was wonderful!

This is an older pic, from last year.

Boxi has gone through some difficult times lately, poor guy.. we needed to take him to the vet to have a chip implanted- as we plan to take him to another country - and it was a horrible experinece for him. He has the chip now, but it was quite a showdown in the vet's office... the vet said that he only heard sounds like that on Discovery Channel.

I think Boxi scrached his (own) eyes a little.. they had to sedate him...Well, thank god it's over.

As soon as he's back to (otherwise lovingly) self I'll post new photos :).

Times Square at around 8 o'clock in the evening

For my friend Posicat's birthday, a group of us got together for a visit to Medieval Times in Shcaumberg.

The show was technically impressive. Great lights and sound. Lots of action. The stage combat was a little bit unconvincing to me at times, but it was still fun to watch.

What weirded me out was the plot. It started out as a ren-fairesque chivalrous tournament. That was enjoyable. But at the end it devolved into a spectacle that reminded me of Roman gladiatorial combat. It became out-and-out blood sports, and I was uncomfortable watching it, and with the crowd's reactions to it.

There were some plot threads that were a bit difficult for me to follow as well, but I blame that on a combination of hearing difficulties and distraction with my camera.

Shooting the event was a lot of fun. I learned more about how to use my manual f2.8 135mm prime. There were many pretty horses and pretty men to keep pointing my camera at.

The food was plentiful and good too. I was a little unsure about how much to tip servers, since I don't know whether they make tipped minimum wage or not, how many people they're serving, and how much work was going on behind the scenes.

Anyway, the whole thing was pretty fun. I don't need to go again, but I'm glad to have gone out and done something memorable for a friend's birthday.

Vladimír Turner’s film Modern Times (based on Charlie Chaplin’s 1936 film of the same name) presents „hooverboard etudes“ and focuses on the alienation caused by technological progress. „Modern times have changed dramatically since Charlie Chaplin. Today, given his soulful reflection on the world, Chaplin would probably be dependent on Xanax,” says Turner.

According to Turner, in humanity’s effort to escape boredom and natural movement, it has achieved the ridiculous extension of human limbs via technological conveniences. The main character, a lone figure, strikes out onto the city streets and the wild landscape of the Atlantic coast. He gets into paradoxical situations drawn out to absurd proportions. The performer-tourist discovers some mountains, but in reality he is a lazy consumer who rides on a Hooverboard.

Turner is a good example of an „urban“ adventurer and supporter of so-called microadventureism. Hashtag #microadventure has been expanded globally through social networks by the British adventurer Alastair Humphreys, who in 2011 exchanged long journeys for small expeditions near his residence. He summed up his urban experiences in the book Microadventures: Local Discoveries for Great Escapes, which quickly became a bestseller.

The strong interest in the phenomenon of „local“ experiences thus satisfies into the current social need for a sustainable way of life and offers an alternative to today’s adventurers, whose desire for experiences is redeemed by their bad conscience regarding their surroundings and the environment.

The film was made with the support of the MeetFactory Gallery and the La Fourmie Association

From my New York trip in 2004. I understand this section of Broadway is now closed off to traffic and a step structure built above the ticketing office for Broadway shows.

Pictures of Rihanna's performance at Good Morning America to promote her new album

In between searching for wildlife on Sunday I took time out a couple of times to photograph a Claas Jaguar feeding forage to Tom Roberts John Deere and a Massey Ferguson. They were working on Roberts's land which runs parallel with our own yard. This was their second crop of what has been a good growing season so far but wet weather has meant that a lot of farms have only recently got their first crop in. Across the Colne Valley Tony Garside was making round bales so I took a few shots with my 600mm lens. I used a mix of lens including the 600mm and ended up with a few tight-and cropped-shots as I struggled to fit the whole combination in the frame even when they were a couple of hundred yards away at the bottom of the fields. Slaithwaite and its twin rail viaducts makes a nice backdrop. The light was dull and flat until the end of the afternoon when the sun finally shone through.

Times Square, every bit alive at 2AM

Early Saturday in Times Square. As usual lots of taxis running down 7th Ave.

Missed this door like a hundred times because it was behind a big ugly gate.
