Illustrated to the collaborators...Individual Initiative to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the birth of The Bab 1819-2019
Designed to slow down the process by spending mindfulness colouring time for deeper reflection, pondering and meditating on the deeper meanings embedded with the study material...plus examples of applied arts in the learning field...
Artomatic For The People, 2017
“When I look at the repertoire of work that White chefs and restaurateurs have built on ethnic cuisine, it feels in a way, dehumanizing. White people are able to establish outrageously successful careers for being experts and authorities on the stuff that racialized folks do every day simply by existing. But of course, people of colour will rarely, if ever, be called experts on how to simply be themselves. It's as if racialized folks and their ways of life are objects to be observed—study material, of sorts—rather than entire countries, cultures, and individual complex lives.” ―Lorraine Chuen

I suspect that this is a dorm room. What is the girl on the right studying? Is it, as someone suggested to me, a photo album and not study materials? What is the girl in the middle knitting? What is the girl on the left typing? Note the cigarette in her right hand. Note the very inconspicuous cigarette in the hand of the blonde in the middle. Shouldn't all three of them be wearing plaid skirts?

Just one short day in Tirana before going home.
National Historical Museum was inaugurated on October 28, 1981. As the most important museum in Albania, National Historical Museum aims to provide knowledge and appreciation of Albania’s history to the local, national and international public. It also aims to encourage dialogue among citizens about the Albanian past, present and future. For this purpose, it preserves and studies material and immaterial evidence of Albania’s historical and cultural heritage, which are communicated and introduced in an environment that promotes education. It also organizes and enables activities that support its vision and mission. The building of National Historical Museum has a total area of 27,000 m2; it has an exhibition area of 18,000 m2 and a total volume of 81,000 m3. There are about 6,200 objects in the museum’s premises, which belong to a relatively long period of time, beginning back to the IV millennium BC until the second half of the 20th century. There are around 3100 exhibited objects. The rest of the objects are in funds. Currently, the National Historical Museum has seven pavilions: Antiquity, with 585 objects; The Middle Ages, with 217 objects; Iconography, with 90 objects (of which 70 are icons and 20 are liturgical church objects); National Renaissance, with 230 objects; Independence, with 142 objects and so on. A working group was dedicated to the design and content of the National Historical Museum, composed of the best specialists of museology, archaeology, history, ethnography, visual art and restoration. The working group is led by distinguished personalities, such as Gani Strazimiri, Koço Miho, Besim Daja, Skënder Luarasi, Valentina Pistoli, Sami Pashallari, Ilia Papanikolla, Robert Kota, Latif Lazimi, Guri Pani, Maksim Mitrojorgji, Magdalena Furxhiu, Odhise Paskali, Kristaq Rama, Shaban Hadëri, Foto Stamo, Fatmir Haxhiu, Guri Madhi, Ndreçi Plasari, Stefanaq Pollo, Kristo Frashëri, Selim Islami, Kleanthi Dede, Ballkize Haxhihyseni, Taqi Miho and many others. Kenric D’Souza
BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation (First Year student)
Country of origin: India
“Studying in the UK has offered me a completely different style of learning from my education in India. It has exposed me to a wider community of people with different opinions and cultural backgrounds. The wildlife in the UK is also vastly different from that found in the Indian subcontinent and I am learning about many new and exciting species.
“I heard about this course from someone in India who had studied Animal Management at Nottingham Trent University’s Brackenhurst campus. UCAS helped me apply and I felt this particular course suited me well.
“I feel supported as an international student, and I know that if I had any problems there would be someone who could help me. The lecturers are very enthusiastic and encourage you to think critically when looking at study material. My favourite modules have been Animal Handling and Wildlife Surveying so far.
“When I graduate I wish to stay in the UK for a few years and try to secure research funding to study Grey Wolves in Alaska. Later I would also like to return to India and implement conservation work that would help the wildlife in my country for the better.”

The National Historical Museum is a scientific research institution. In addition to the pavilions, the museum also has archive and laboratory environments, temporary exhibitions halls and conference rooms.
The gray squirrel is a very diverse animal. It is native to North America. Introduced to Great Britain, Ireland, and South Africa, where the squirrel flourishes and is in no danger as a species. In North America, its numbers are regulated by shooting it for sport and in England, numbers are controlled by poisoning the animals.
Habitat
Although the gray squirrel is found in parks and yards, woodlands are its preferred habitat. It builds its den in tree branches, inside a hollow trunk, or in an empty birds nest. It usually lines the nest with moss, thistledown, dried grass, and feathers and builds a cover. A gray squirrel will build several nests or dens and use them all. When a female has young, the nest is theirs alone, but winter nests are often shared to generate warmth.
Breeding
Female squirrels can mate only twice a year, but males can mate at any time. Often, severalmales will attempt to mate with the same female. They try to attract her attention by slapping the bark of trees with their paws and chattering loudly. After the mating the males play no part in the rearing of the young.
Birth occurs six weeks after mating. The naked, blind young are fed every two to four hours for several weeks. At seven weeks, they follow their mother out on the tree branches and before long have learned to climb. The young squirrels gradually begin to eat solid food and are weaned at 10 weeks of age. A month later, they leave the den. If there are not too many squirrels in the area, the young will build the dens nearby. Otherwise, they will be chased away to less crowded feeding area.
Food & Feeding
The Gray Squirrel every day even in the winter. It does not hibornate and is unable to conserve enough energy to survive for long periods without food. It is most active at dawn and dusk, when it searchesfor whatever fruit, shoots, and seeds are in season. Small thumbs on it's front paws allow it to hold securely as it feeds. The squirrel's diet varies according to season. It eats manly tree bark and fungi in the winter and buds in the summer. In September it eats nuts and accorns. A hungry gray squirrel will also raid a bird's nest for eggs, steal food from bird feeders and dig up plants. The squirrel buries extra food just below the soils surface, which it later locates by smell.
Naturewatch
The gray squirrel is one of the easiest animals to observe. It is found in parks and woods amoung both coniferous and deciduous trees, which provide a plentiful source of food. A squirrel's den can be found in a hollow tree or built between sturdy branches. Winter and breeding nests are usually larger then the summer nests and they are built of studier material. If you find an abandoned baby squirrel, it is best to leave it alone, since it must be fed every two to four hours for several weeks.

On the near side, my main Open University work area. A stack of course books, study materials, and sundries (stapler, holepunch, etc.)
On the far side, my computer and music area. Music and computer keyboards, mouse, external HD, webcam, etc. My PS3 in the middle next to the TV. My monitor on a nice articulated arm to free up some desk space.
5.1 speakers around and under the desk along with my PC and guitar amp. A nice view of some trees from the window. Just out of shot to the right is my box of coding reference books. Finally the awesome pine table, which I think is from Ikea. Marvellous piece of furniture!
So basically I have no excuse for not doing work... :)

Rotund Mk2 is a 4" original resin robot, featuring 3 interchangeable heads. Timed for the second anniversary of the original Rotund's release in 2009, two colourways will be made available at launch.
Rotund 2 Year Anniversary pack is a run of just 5 Rotunds and includes a matching Radcliffe Sprog, both sporting the original Dirty Copper colourway. The same three heads as Edition A are packed with this Rotund, tho the heads are sporting bright white eyes.
Backstory
"Rotund Mk1 was a companion robot designed with small children in mind, playful and simple, yet robust enough to take anything a day's play could throw at him.
Rotund Mk2 was never intended as a replacement for the Mk2, but as a companion robot for the teenage years once the Mk1's childish charms had been outgrown. Still solidly built, this 4 foot sidekick had a knack for being able to vary roles on the fly through a swift head-swap or two. The classic see-through projection dome of the Mk1 endured, a teaching aid able to display holographic representations of the study material in question (or the latest holo-thriller if correctly "tweaked"). Some new additions included a friendly-faced companion head for fun times and hijinks and a stern, multi-spectral security head to monitor the halls or enforce a curfew. The latter also had some sweet wide-angled lenses perfect for shooting skate vids for HoloTube.
Rotund Mk2 came with these 3 heads as standard, but as the unit became popular, demand for varied and unique applications ensured some interesting models became available."

NEET is a national-level entrance exam for students to get admission into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH & other nursing courses provided by top medical colleges/ universities in India.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced NEET 2023 date with the exam scheduled to be conducted on the 7th of May this year. As there are only 4 months remaining for the highly competitive National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), it is time for students to gear up and push their preparations in order to ace the medical entrance exam.
It is evident from past years that around 15 lakh applicants enter for the pragmatic race for admissions into 1.5 lakh seats across various medical colleges in India. Aspirants expecting a tougher competition this year, are at a forefront in preparing a smart work plan towards success by covering the entire syllabus on time.
NEET is a national-level entrance exam for students to get admission into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH & other nursing courses provided by top medical colleges/ universities in India. Application process for this year's exam has already started with the students required to register for the exam before the last week of January.
The highly competitive entrance exam is conducted in the pen & paper (offline) mode consisting of 4 sections (Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology). Each subject will consist of 2 sections A & B with compulsory 35 questions in section A to attempt, section B in all the subjects will have an option to attempt any 10 questions out of 15, providing some sigh of relief. This make the exam a total of 180 questions combined, which need to be completed within 3 hours, the total marks being unchanged (720).
Comparatively, many aspirants last year suggested that the overall difficulty level was moderate with physics being the toughest of all sections for them with plenty of numerical and concept-based questions. In biology, Zoology was found to be easier than the botany section. Even though highly competitive scoring is necessary to get the college of choice, it is important to be prepared right from today and understand what and how to study within the given time.
• Go for NCERT text books - Choosing the best and simple study material will assist in strengthening the concepts and NCERT text books are always the first priority instead of referring to too many books. NCERT covers a huge chunk of the NEET exam and any applicant having mastered the NCERT books will easily be able to answer the majority of the exam questions without much difficulty. NCERT books help teach fundamentals of any particular topic and provide a clear idea about the specific topic.
• Proper planning is important - Learning time-management will not only help you prepare for the entrance exam but in the long run, it will help you crack and finish the exam faster. Giving ample amount of time to every topic right from the beginning helps to cover the entire course with enough time left for revisions and rectifying the errors if any.
• Review shortfalls and work on them - It is a fact that while preparing for such highly competitive exams, aspirants will sometime make mistakes but it is also important to learn from your mistakes and overcome them. If a someone is finding any topic hard, they should look out for other sources to get clarity on that particular topic, take help from your teachers or peer groups to understand and improve but never let your mistakes kill your motivation.
• Practice as many mock tests - It is important to prioritize solving mock exams and the previous year question papers because it gives an applicant the general idea about what to expect in the highly competitive medical exam along with getting a clear idea about the level of preparation needed and what topics to focus on.
• Consistent revision - Consistent revision is the key as of now, that will play a major role in deciding the performance. It is advised that aspirants must revise all the topics and chapters that they have already studied in order to remember them for a longer time. Weekly revision of all the subjects enhances the conceptual clarity thereby aiding them for a better performance and ranking.
Subject wise preparation
While effective time management and rigorous practice has always been the key aspect in cracking any competitive examination, but knowing what questions to attend first to secure and achieve the maximum number of marks is important for every applicant.
Here are the important topics subject wise -
Physics - Waves & Sound, Thermodynamics, Kinematics, Gravitation, Capacitors & Electrostatics, Magnetics, Electromagnetic Induction, Fluids, Heat, Optics & Modern Physics. Since NEET syllabus for physics section has almost equal weightage from both Class XI and XII, in order to enhance the preparation outcomes, focus wisely to cover all the topics. Though mechanics seems to be a low soring topic (suggested by various experts) but carries almost a major 35% share in terms of marks allocation, and thus is a must topic. Other scoring topics include electricity & Magnetism, Optics helping in betterment of the overall scores without any difficulty.
Chemistry - Chemical & Ionic Equilibrium, Chemical thermodynamics, Electrochemistry, biomolecules and polymers along with the periodic table, Coordination Chemistry & Chemical Bonding in Inorganic Chemistry, Mole Concept in Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, chemical kinetics.
Biology - Photosynthesis in Higher Plants can be of high weightage, Sexual Reproduction in Flowering Plants, Morphology of flowering plants, Biotechnology and its Applications, Biodiversity and Conservation, Cell Cycle and Cell Division, Human Reproduction,
The correct strategy and effective time management are essential for determining an aspirant's rank. The best use of time for aspirants is to revise, maintain accuracy and quality when responding to a single question, and identifying and addressing weak areas.

There are different areas based on which electrical engineer pe questions are set and it is important to select professionals who are having years of experience in teaching as well as providing all necessary power pe study materials. Definition: Material:
1. The substance or substances out of which a thing is or can be made.
2. Something, such as an idea or information, that is to be refined and made or incorporated into a finished effort: material for a comedy.
3. materials Tools or apparatus for the performance of a given task: writing materials.
4. Yard goods or cloth.
Idea: So with that definition in mind I realised that this tree could be made out of just about anything as long as it’s made of matter, which is everything.
What is material? Is it clothing? Is it building material? Is it study material? Is it Photographic material? Is it you? Is it me? Is it my daughter?
Is it waste material? Is it material gains? (money and possessions)? I have tried to explore a few of these possibilities in this brief.
This is the first and most obvious interpretation of the category "Material"
being fabric.
Process: For this tree I used an old pair of worn jeans and cut wholes in them to make a cactus and a tree. To make it show up better I put some green card behind the holes and coloured in the trunk on the tree. The hardest part was maintaining the frayed bits to hold the stops of the "trunks" together.
18 October 2022, Bytom, Poland: Katiia Kharytoniuk (37) sits down in a large playing room for children to prepare some study material for her five-year-old daughter Sofija. As children in Ukraine start school at the age of six, Katiia says she wants her daughter to learn how to read and count, so that she can get into a good school in Ukraine. Katiia arrived as a refugee in Poland from Uman, Ukraine, together with her two daughters Sofija (5) and Liliia (14) in March 2022, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After three months staying in the home of a Polish family, she now lives with her daughters in a building at the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland parish in Bytom. The family has two rooms for themselves, and share a kitchen, bathroom and a playing room for children with a couple of other families from Ukraine. Katiia is an economist, and before fleeing the war, worked as a sales manager at a factory manufacturing furniture. The Netherlands
Loevestein Castle is a medieval water castle, built between 1357 and 1397 on a strategic location in the middle of the Netherlands, where rivers Maas and Waal come together. At first it was a simple square brick building, used to charge toll from trading vessels using the rivers. By 1372, the castle was under control of the Counts of Holland. Around 1575, by order of William the Silent, it was expanded to a larger fortress, surrounded by earthen fortifications with stone bastions on the northern side, two moats, an arsenal, and housing for a commander and soldiers.
It changed hands thrice between the Northern Dutch and the Spanish, during the Eighty Years' War.
From 1619 the castle became a prison for political prisoners. A famous inmate was the eminent lawyer, poet and politician Hugo de Groot (Hugo Grotius), often presented as the "father of modern international law", who was serving a controversially imposed life sentence. In 1621 he escaped from his prison in a book chest, that regularly contained his study material. When you visit Loevestein Castle, you are given a personal key so that you can discover the castle and its stories. Children are allowed to climb into Hugo's book chest themselves. Scientology is a body of beliefs and related practices created by L. Ron Hubbard (1911–1986), starting in 1952, as a successor to his earlier self-help system, Dianetics. Hubbard characterized Scientology as a religion, and in 1953 incorporated the Church of Scientology in Camden, New Jersey.
Scientology teaches that people are immortal spiritual beings who have forgotten their true nature. Its method of spiritual rehabilitation is a type of counseling known as auditing, in which practitioners aim to consciously re-experience painful or traumatic events in their past in order to free themselves of their limiting effects. Study materials and auditing courses are made available to members in return for specified donations.
Scientology is legally recognized as a tax-exempt religion in the United States and some other countries, and the Church of Scientology emphasizes this as proof that it is a bona fide religion. In other countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom, Scientology does not have comparable religious status.
The growth of Scientology here in Ireland had been "very, very small". Twenty years after the Dublin office opened, it has managed to attract only a few hundred members. The Church has also failed to achieve charitable status in Ireland, which would give it tax-free status.

Old Town is the historic original town site of Albuquerque, New Mexico, for the provincial kingdom of Santa Fe de Nuevo México, established in 1706 by New Mexico governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdés. It is listed on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties as the Old Albuquerque Historic District, and is protected by a special historic zoning designation by the city. However, prior to its establishment as a city in the Santa Fe de Nuevo México province, many indigenous tribes lived there including Diné, Pueblo, Apache, Tiwa, and others. The present-day district contains about ten blocks of historic adobe buildings surrounding Old Town Plaza. On the plaza's north side stands San Felipe de Neri Church, a Spanish colonial church constructed in 1793.
Old Town is a popular tourist destination with a large number of restaurants, shops, and galleries, and is also home to the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and the Explora science center are located a short distance to the northeast. Old Town is known for its luminaria displays during the holiday season, particularly on Christmas Eve.
Layout
Old Town occupies an area of about 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2), roughly bounded by Rio Grande Boulevard, Mountain Road, 19th Street, and Central Avenue. At the center is Old Town Plaza, surrounded by approximately ten blocks of one- and two-story buildings. The central plaza layout was favored by Spanish colonial authorities and is found in many other cities and towns throughout New Mexico, including Santa Fe, Taos, Las Vegas, and Mesilla. The area around Old Town was originally acequia fed farmland, but it has been covered over by 20th century urban development, however, land to the north and south of the plaza continues to operate for agricultural purposes with the acequia traditions, including Los Ranchos, Corrales, South Valley, and Isleta Village Proper.
History
Prior to 1706, indigenous tribes traveled through and occupied the land on which Old Town Albuquerque now stands. These indigenous peoples include the Anasazi, Diné, Pueblo, Apache, and Tiwa communities. While it is unknown approximately how long the area has been inhabited by indigenous peoples, their long-standing presence in the Albuquerque area is exemplified by the thousands of years old Petroglyphs found in the Sandia mountains to the Acoma pueblo which is still inhabited by the Acoma tribe today. During this time, the region that is now known as Albuquerque was known as Paak'u. The indigenous peoples residing in the Paak'u region engaged in subsistence farming and hunting, managing complex, intertwined systems of government and religion. The Pueblo peoples of modern Albuquerque originally stemmed from one tribe called the Tamayame or Santa Ana tribe. As they discovered the resources that the Sandia mountains and the Rio Grande had to offer, they slowly spread into different pueblos as far as Angostura, a village 131 miles northeast of Albuquerque. The spread led into the development of five distinct language groups and many more dialects based off those languages. Today, because of the combination of smaller and larger pueblos due to colonization by both the Spanish and Anglo Americans, there is a total of nineteen pueblos which are recognized as sovereign nations in and around Albuquerque.
Arrival of the Spanish
Spanish relations with indigenous peoples in Albuquerque were complex and violent. In New Mexico, the first interaction that Puebloans had was at the Zuni pueblo of Vacapa when the Spanish explorer Frey Marcos de Niza sent his African slave Esteban to interact with the Zuni people. Estaban was subsequently killed by the Zuni, establishing a tone for Spanish-Indigenous relations throughout New Mexico which carried into the founding of Albuquerque. The Spanish first had contact with the Pueblos in the area that would become Old Town Albuquerque when in 1540 Fransisco Vásquez de Coronado’s expedition searching for the Seven Cities of Cibola lead him to the Pueblos. Coronado was able to peacefully trade small gifts and items with them at first, but as winter overtook the unprepared conquistadors, they steadily became more and more violent with the Pueblo peoples, demanding more food and supplies and progressively conquering a few of the Puebloan’s smaller villages. The Tiwa people of Albuquerque fought back against the Spanish until they left to return to Mexico in the Spring of 1541. However, the violent interactions between the two parties gave each a long-lasting impression of the other, further contributing to negative relations between the Spanish and Indigenous peoples of Albuquerque. This paved the way for the violent conquest of Oñate, and his ouster from New Mexico by the indigenous peoples in 1680 during the Pueblo Revolts.
Albuquerque began to be settled by a group of people traveling in the Spanish “Reconquista” led by Don Diego de Vargas in 1693. Several families in this group split off and asked permission to settle the Middle Valley which was the area south of the Sandia and Alameda pueblos. The settlement grew progressively to encompass around forty-five Spanish estate and what is known as Old Town Albuquerque was established in 1702 and recognized by Francisco Cuervo y Valdes, the governor of Spanish New Mexico, as a municipality in 1706. In 1784, over 3500 Spaniards and 600 Indigenous people were recognized by the census to be residents of Old Town. However, for many of the Indigenous tribes living around Old Town, the rapid growth of Old Town served as a reminder to the continuing conquest of their people. Cuervo reported that the new settlement was home to 252 residents and had been laid out with streets, a plaza, and a church in accordance with the town planning regulations set forth in the Laws of the Indies. Cuervo's account had been exaggerated in order to offer a centralized Villa to better serve the already existent Hispano and Pueblo communities. Those communities included Barelas, Corrales, Isleta Pueblo, Los Ranchos, Sandia Pueblo, and others along the Rio Grande rather than a centralized settlement. After a formal investigation, the villa was allowed to keep its title, especially as it was established to serve those communities as an outpost on Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.
Women also played an overlooked role in Old Town Albuquerque. At least twenty women are known to have been a part of the Spanish colonization of Albuquerque and the subsequent founding of Old Town. While many were subjugated to more traditional colonial roles like cooking, cleaning, and homemaking, some quickly became heads of their respective families due to the death of their husbands. Those who were designated heads of households were able to inherit land as a result of Spanish law and became the breadwinners for their families. The twenty women who are known to have helped colonize Old Town have come to be acknowledged as the "founding women of Albuquerque" and are listed on a plaque in Old Town Plaza provided by the New Mexico Historic Women Marker Program.
Like other Spanish colonial settlements, Albuquerque consisted of a central plaza surrounded by houses, government offices, and a church. For much of the 18th century, the homes around the plaza were inhabited only on Sundays as the residents spent the rest of the week on their farms. It was not until the late 1700s that a permanent population was established at the plaza.
Toward the Modern Age
Possession of Albuquerque, along with the rest of New Mexico, passed to Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence and later to the United States in 1846 when General Stephen Kearny took control of Santa Fe and the Santa Fe trail in 1846. The territory was officially recognized as US territory on February 2, 1848 under the signature of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, representing yet another change in the power dynamics for Indigenous people and Mexicans living in New Mexico alike. Kearny's troops established a U.S. Army post near the plaza, which brought an influx of goods and people over the next twenty years. The 1860 Census showed a population of 1,608, of which the army garrison made up about a third. During the U.S. Civil War, Confederate troops under Henry Hopkins Sibley captured the town in March 1862 but were later forced to retreat back to Texas after losing most of their supplies at the Battle of Glorieta Pass. Albuquerque saw minor action when the retreating Confederates were involved in a skirmish with Union troops in the Battle of Albuquerque. For the most part, however, the town remained a quiet agricultural community.
The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway reached Albuquerque in 1880, building a depot about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the plaza. This led to the creation of a rival "New Albuquerque" (now Downtown Albuquerque) which quickly boomed thanks to the railroad and was incorporated as the City of Albuquerque in 1891. The original town, now called Old Albuquerque, entered a decline as businesses and institutions moved to New Town. The county courthouse was moved in 1926, and by the 1930s barely any businesses were still operating around the plaza. Old Town's fortunes began to improve in the 1940s as Albuquerque citizens began to take note of Old Town's historic value, and the Old Albuquerque Historical Society was established in 1946. Old Town was annexed by the city in 1949, bringing municipal improvements like paved streets and sidewalks for the first time. Since then, Old Town has developed into a popular tourist attraction, with most of the adobe houses re-purposed into shops, restaurants, and galleries.
The Plaza
Old Town Plaza dates to the original founding of the city in the early 1700s and remains the center of Old Town. It was originally larger than today, extending to the south and east, but was reduced to its present size by the late 1800s. In the 1850s, a 121-foot (37 m) flagpole was erected in the center of the plaza by the U.S. Army. The adobe wall surrounding the plaza was replaced with a picket fence in 1881 and then a stone wall built by the Works Progress Administration in 1937. The WPA's walls and bandstand were unpopular and were removed just eleven years later through a grassroots effort organized by the Old Albuquerque Historical Society. The historical society also oversaw construction of a new bandstand, new landscaping, and installation of 16 wrought iron benches purchased from Chihuahua, Mexico.
At the east end of the plaza is a display of two replica M1835 mountain howitzers. During the civil war, the guns originally belonged to the Union until the Confederacy captured the guns and used them against the Union. Retreating Confederate forces buried eight howitzers near the plaza in 1862 to prevent them from falling into Union hands. he guns were rediscovered in 1889 with the help of the former Confederate artillery commander, who still remembered their location. Two of the howitzers were put on display in the plaza but were later moved to the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History and replaced with replicas. Accompanying the guns is a plaque that is controversial for having pro-confederate sentiments, mentioning the name of a Confederate Major Trevanion Teel. The plaque was partially funded by his ancestors, however, Teel was a member of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a group like the Ku Klux Klan, that sought to conquer territory in Latin America with the purpose of establishing an empire based on slavery. At the west end of the plaza is a display of various flags which have flown over the city, including those of Spain, Mexico, and the United States. There was also a Confederate flag reflecting the brief occupation of the city by Confederate forces, but it was removed in 2015 amid the ongoing controversy surrounding such symbols. Two other plaques, both which have created controversy due to their historical flaws in the portrayal of events, that commemorated the Skirmish of Albuquerque and buried Confederate soldiers respectively were also removed at that time. At this time, the plaque that accompanies the howitzers remains in tact.
La Journada Statue
A controversial statue known as La Journada featuring the Spanish conquistador Juan de Oñate formerly sat in the middle of Old Town Plaza. The statue was commissioned by the City of Albuquerque in 1998 and created by New Mexico artists Betty Sabo and Reynaldo "Sunny" Rivera. It depicts several Spanish settlers and an Indigenous guide led by Oñate who is one of the first Spanish conquistadors to travel to and settle in the New Mexico territory. However, much of Oñate's success were at the expense of Indigenous peoples, most notably the Acoma people, who he tortured and massacred. Oñate was later removed and prosecuted by the Spanish crown in 1614, however, the pain and generational trauma he has inflicted on many Indigenous peoples in New Mexico have caused continuing controversy around the statue. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, during a protest that rose at the site of the statue, a gunman opened fire on the protesters, prompting the Albuquerque mayor Tim Keller have the statue removed the next day. The incident occurred when armed counter protesters from the New Mexico Civil Guard, a paramilitary group, attempted to act in a law enforcement capacity, trying to detain protestors. A judge later ruled that the group did not have the right to act in the capacity as law enforcement or national guard as well as barring them from having any law enforcement powers independent of the state government of New Mexico. As of 2023, the statue remains in storage with its new home still undetermined by the Albuquerque city council.
Buildings
Most of the historic buildings in Old Town were built between 1870 and 1900, though some are older. Only one building, San Felipe de Neri Church, is proven to date to the Spanish colonial period. During the 20th century, many of the buildings were remodeled to facilitate modern commercial use, often including historically insensitive conversion of authentic vernacular and Victorian architectural details to a more idealized Territorial or Pueblo Revival style. Other buildings have been better preserved.
Five properties in Old Town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places:
Salvador Armijo House, built c. 1840
Charles A. Bottger House, built in 1912
Our Lady of the Angels School, built in 1878
San Felipe de Neri Church, built in 1793
Antonio Vigil House, built in 1879

Harald Sohlberg (Norwegian - 1869 - !935)
Winter Night in the Mountains (1914)
Harald Sohlberg discovered the motif for ”Winter Night in the Mountains” during an Easter skiing trip. He created many sketches and different versions of the motif before this famous painting was completed.
Sohlberg made his first sketch for the painting on the train home from the skiing trip in 1899. The final version was not completed until 1914.
This would emerge as the most important motif of Sohlberg’s career. After his first trip, he returned to the mountains in Rondane several times to be near the source of his inspiration. He also took photographs that he used as study material. Sohlberg worked on depicting the mountains in Rondane for 15 years, resulting in several paintings, a number of drawings and a popular print.
A snow-covered palace
In most of the versions Sohlberg produced of Rondane, the mountains resemble a snow-covered palace, and there is no sign of human activity. A few exceptions are versions with a cabin and some skiers. In the final, and largest, version the snow-covered mountains tower in a nocturnal landscape. Stars can be glimpsed in the murky sky, and in the foreground the bushes and trees display their dark, naked winter silhouettes. Almost like a stage curtain, they are gathered on each side of the picture, drawing us into the cold, blue realm of winter. Sohlberg was intent on ensuring that the foreground was not too dense and overcrowded: “It must not give a desolate and wild effect. Because this is where the night and anxiety of the picture should reside.”
This painting is Harald Sohlberg’s most significant work, and although it was executed rather late in relation to the golden age of symbolism, it perhaps represents the pinnacle of symbolist landscapes in Norway. It was first shown at the 1914 Jubilee Exhibition commemorating the centennial of the Norwegian Constitution. The following year it was purchased by J.B. Stang, who donated it to the National Gallery in 1918.
In 1995 the painting was chosen as “Norway’s national painting” in a public vote sponsored by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. In 2005 the Sohlbergplassen lookout point, on the Atnsjøen lake, was incorporated as a stop along one of Norway’s National Tourist Routes.
On the train home from Ronda for Easter, Sohlberg made the first sketch for what would become his masterpiece. To develop the subject, he returned to Ronda twice. Pencil and water color sketches photos and several painted sketches eventually culminated in the large version here, from 1914. In a letter, Sohlberg compares the experience of the mountains to 'a mass in a mighty cathedral'. The painting was shown for the first time at ehe Jubilee Exhibition in Kristiana (Oslo) in 1914. At the World Exhibition in San Francisco in 1915 it received an honorary award.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).
The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.
The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.
The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.
