Here's Dan guiding a string of pack mules along a trail in the John Muir Wilderness, in 1977, with Mary Ann.

Okay, you don't know what pack mules are, or mule packers. Well: In the center of California, there's a range of mountains that run north-south up and down the state like a backbone, and much of that mountainous area is wilderness -- no roads allowed, and no motorized vehicles.

The way in is to hike ... or to ride a horse. About two dozen pack stations line the edges of this huge wilderness. A pack station is a sort of little ranch that has dozens, sometimes hundreds, of horses and mules, and makes a business out of tossing tourists up on the backs of the horses, all their camp gear up on the backs of the mules, and setting out for the wilds for camping trips that last from a few days to a couple of weeks.

The business is called "packing," the mules are called "pack mules," and the particular type of cowboy who does the work is called a "mule packer."

There are countless streams and myriad small lakes in these jagged mountains, and every damned one of them is crystal clear and ice cold. And oh, buddy, is it NICE camping back there. The terrain ranges from about 8,000 to 14,000 feet above sea level, and the air is so clear that some nights it's almost impossible to pick out the constellations because there are too MANY stars.

I worked at pack stations for a couple of summers. Dan did it for something like 50 years.

I loved each and every piece of fabric that Eileen sent for this block. I only recognized a couple of them other than the solid!

So, I decorated my room yesterday night with prints of some photos I've taken over the past while. I got the idea to string them up like so from: www.flickr.com/photos/michellenicolephotography/4674971847/.

Um... what else... I'm wearing white WeSC headphones, reading Nikolski by Nicolas Dickner, and wearing a Child Soldier Cycle t-shirt.

I took this picture on campus at Calabasas High School. I used a Nikon D70 to achieve this image. What I did to take this picture was use string and put it on a bush. I thought using plants would be a good collaboration with the string to add more subjects in the picture than just the string. It incorporated some green as well to make the picture more interesting. The fuzz on the string is really noticeable because I used a Macro Lens. The different colored string allows the eye to wander along the frame of the picture. I untwisted some of the string to give the string more texture. I also added some water to the small branch to add more reflection and shine; as well as texture. The lens flare was added through using Render > Lens Flare on Photoshop. It adds more uniqueness to the already unusual string concept. I enjoyed this project because before this small photoshoot, I would have never thought to take pictures of string. This concept would have never crossed my mind and now I am more open to taking pictures of everyday objects that people usually take for granted.
