DANGER: CA. SEA LIONS

(Personal Note: On shore or on a dock in a harbor like this, the main danger to California Sea Lions is humans. Boats with propellers, fishing line and gear, trash in the water and people who wish to harm them on purpose are the primary threats. I do not know what alerted this herd of CA. Sea Lions, but they are very vocal and most likely were alerted by one of the mature males. As you can see they responded on mass and reentered the safety of the water. For more information please log onto www.marinemammalcenter.org/.)
Behavior
California sea lions are very social animals, and groups often rest closely packed together at favored haul-out sites on land or float together on the ocean's surface in "rafts." They are sometimes seen "porpoising," or jumping out of the water, presumably to speed up their swimming. Sea lions have also been seen "surfing" breaking waves. California sea lions are opportunistic eaters, feeding on squid, octopus, herring, rockfish, mackerel, and small sharks. In turn, sea lions are preyed upon by Orcas (killer whales) and great white sharks.
At The Marine Mammal Center
"California sea lions are our most common patients at The Marine Mammal Center. In 2009, we admitted over 1700 animals. Nearly 1400 of these were California sea lions. The most common reasons California sea lions are rescued include: malnutrition, domoic acid toxicosis, leptospirosis, cancer, pneumonia, entanglement in debris or fishing gear, gunshots, and other wounds. In 2009, many of the sea lions that stranded were malnourished yearlings. Animals can become severely underweight from maternal separation, disease, lack of food sources, effects of El Niño and other environmental factors. In 1998, the Center diagnosed the first case of domoic acid toxicosis in marine mammals; a condition caused by harmful algal blooms, which causes the animals to have seizures. Although the Center has conducted extensive studies to better understand this disease, hundreds of sea lions are affected annually." (Source: Marine Mammal Center 2015: www.marinemammalcenter.org/)

The status of humans has evolved from social creatures to data producing creatures. Everything we do leaves a data-trace. The accumulation of data from a lot of people, also known as the study of big data can bring commercial profit, but also a social profit if the information is used to generate conclusions or programs that can help society. In the same time, almost everyone is now a user connected to the internet. At every moment, every user generates data that can pe seen by companies, internet service providers or other people. How can people realize which informations are good to giveaway and which are the ones to guard?
We are going to talk about the double sided sword of data in May in Brașov under the umbrella "Friendly Fire – Make Data Love Not Data War". We are organizing a workshop dedicated to journalists, activists, sociologists, programmers. During the workshop we aim to develop a mini-documentary and some narrative products that explore the issue of transparency versus privacy. The results of the workshop are going to be presented during a conference open to the public, that is going to take place on May 13th, at Centrul Multicultural al Universității Transilvania. Centrul Cultural German from Brașov has invited Berliner Gazette to facilitate this event and document it via a film.
