Paddington originally formed part of the Sacred Heart Parish, Darlinghurst.
The Franciscans were entrusted with the pastoral care of Woollahra and Paddington in November 1879. Paddington was established as a parish in its own right in 1887 and Fr Bernardine Lawler ofm became the first parish priest. The foundation stone for St Francis of Assisi Church was blessed and laid on March 23rd 1889 and Cardinal Moran officially opened the new church on Sunday 22nd June 1890.
In 1917 it was thought that the Church needed to be enlarged but after the building of the new sanctuary it was realised the plans were too costly and we are left with a church which consists of the nave of the 1890 church designed by John Barlow, and the transepts, sanctuary and sacristies of the 1919 church designed by Bart Moriarty.

Italians being, well, Italian we couldn't let well enough alone. Like Baroque paintings where the religious topic is sometimes lost in a sea of secondary figures the same thing happened to the crèche. Add sone sheep and shepherds, the Magi and their attendants din't forget the townspeople and the other scenic additions and this is what you get and it's wonderful.
This is a set of 6 items—the "Peruzzi Altarpiece" and the five individual panels. These images have a creative commons license, which you may freely use by linking to their respective pages. Please respect the photographer and his work.
Giotto (1266/1276-1337) is generally credited with being the first painter of the Italian Renaissance. He rejected the emotionless faces and the artificial elongated bodies depicted in Byzantine art. Into his figures he breathed distinct facial features and a sense of the natural body beneath their garments. The depictions are more human, more natural.
Giotto is best known for the Arena frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which show the life of Christ and the life of the Virgin Mary.
The Peruzzi Altarpiece—The descriptive information at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh credits Giotto “and assistants” with this altarpiece, possibly for the Peruzzi family chapel in the church of S. Croce, Florence, Italy. Consisting of 5 panels (the total polyptych over 8 feet in length), the work is done in tempera and gold leaf and dates from about 700 years ago—circa 1310-1315. From left to right the figures are St. John the Evangelist, the Virgin Mary, Christ, St. John the Baptist, and St Francis of Assisi. It is one of the few complete altarpieces known by the Giotto workshop. It was a gift of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation (1960).

Pillars of Faith - Contemporary religious art.
“St Francis of Assisi (stained glass) Devoted to following the life of Christ and serving Lady Poverty, St Francis humbly stands wearing sackcloth and holding the dove of peace. His challenging gaze greets us.”
Greg Tricker’s profound and simple style of painting is deeply rooted in a mystical tradition of art. Qualities of myth, an innocence of spirit akin to the folk art tradition and a powerful theatrical element are the key features and influences in his mix of 2D and 3D artworks with stained glass, wood and stone sculptures, wood carvings and paintings.”
This is a photograph of the stained glass exhibit at Salisbury Cathedral.
This tiny statue of St. Francis of Assisi is set into the wall of the cloister in the ruined Franciscan Friary in Askeaton, Co. Limerick!
The reason I say it is mysterious is twofold, (a) the strange positioning of the Saints left hand and (b) the dental votive offerings!
If you look carefully you will see that the Saints left hand is extended and is fitted into and through a slot in the pillar of the alcove into which the statue is set! I have never seen anything quite like this before.
The second strange thing is the teeth below the Saint. The Friary is surrounded by an ancient graveyard so it is likely that old teeth are readily available but these teeth are in good condition and there appears to be a pattern to the placing!
Any suggestions in a stamped addressed envelope with a cheque please?????

[For my contacts: On vacation till the 25th, hope to take a few pics this time. Will visit your streams after I return. Have a great week!]
Have been busy lately to take any new pics, thought I'd share another favourite pic of mine that I had taken a while back. I was walking the dark, shaded, calm and serene inner courtyard. Looking up from the courtyard that late afternoon, the beauty and contrast of this live plant struck me as wonderfully framed as it was by the graceful Portuguese baroque architecture of the white lime-plastered arches of this old church in Goa, India.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The church itself was the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, but we had gone there on Christmas day to be one of the millions that visited the church that week. St. Francis Xavier's body has been enshrined in the Church of St. Francis Xavier since his passing away and cannonization in the late 1500s, but once every ten years his body is brought out for public viewing. Reportedly, this was to be the last viewing ever, and the body was moved to the larger church to handle the millions that would come from all over the earth. Of course, for me this was of additional interest, since I am an alumnus of St. Xavier's Collegiate School, and he was our patron saint.
