St. Francis of Assisi Church (Kirche zum heiligen Franz von Assisi), also known as the Emperor's Jubilee Church (Kaiserjubiläumskirche) and the Mexico Church (Mexikokirche), is a Basilica-style Catholic church in Vienna, Austria. Built between 1898 and 1910, it was consecrated in 1913. It is located on the Mexikoplatz in Vienna's Second District, Leopoldstadt, and is administered by the Order of the Holy Trinity. The construction of the church celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. A competition was held to select the design and it was won by architect Victor Luntz. The four-bay, basilica-like brick building was intended as a garrison church; designed in the Rhenish-Romanesque style, its three red-tiled towers are visible several kilometres away. The church, which is directly situated near the Danube, is now home to the Vienna English Speaking Catholic Community (VESCC) who has held weekly masses at the church since moving there in 2009. The Mexikoplatz (Mexico Square), formerly known as Erzherzog-Karl-Platz (Archduke-Karl-Square), commemorates the fact that Mexico was the only country outside the Soviet Union to protest against the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany.

St. Francis of Assisi Church, designed by the Springfield architectural firm of Helmle & Helmle and built by local contractor Frank Fitzsimmons from 1920 to 1924. The church was dedicated on April 29, 1924.
The church was described in 2008 by Paul Helmle, professor emeritus of architecture at California State Polytechnic University, and a relative of Springfield’s architectural Helmles. In an illustrated guide to the church posted on the Hospital Sisters’ web site, Paul Helmle called St. Francis of Assisi Church “one of the undiscovered treasures of Springfield.”
Although the architects built almost 400 buildings and were a major player in the 20th century physical image of Springfield, this church is certainly one of their finest works. Its exterior brings to mind images of German Romanesque architecture of the 12th century, with its eastern towers sitting confidently against the immense nave recalling medieval monasteries. Inside the terra cotta-clad nave there is harmony between the architectural elements. The astonishing scarlet dome hovering over the baldacchino with columns of richly patterned marble and the elaborate golden tabernacle recreate a past world of overwhelming splendor. As all of you know I have been very sad lately.....well .......I went out to feed the squirrels and I saw one of the most beautiful butterflies I have ever seen going from flower to flower and flying around me.....I followed her around taking pics and then I looked down and saw this beautiful sight....this rock covered with red rose petals........I immediatly thought of my Brutus.....then out of the blue....I heard this loud noise......my jets went by......the MacDill Airforce jets that I LOVE!.......So where there is sadness....Joy!
Lord
make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred let me so love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light; and
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much
seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born
to eternal life.
St. Francis of Assisi
"Most High, glorious God,
enlighten the darkness of my heart and give me
true faith, certain hope, and perfect charity,
sense and knowledge, Lord, that I may carry out
Your holy and true command. Amen."
– Prayer of St Francis.
This mosaic of St Francis is on the facade of the church named after him in New York City.

"Almighty God,
you helped our Seraphic Father Saint Francis
to reflect the image of Christ
through a life of poverty and humility.
May we follow your Son
by walking in the footsteps of Francis of Assisi,
and by imitation of his joyful love.
(We make our prayer) through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen."
- Collect for the Feast of Our Holy Father Francis, which is today (4 October).
This medieval alabaster carving of St Francis as intercessor is in the museum of Salamanca.
As much as I resist the winter cold, there is beauty in the austere elements which overtake the landscape, and provide opportunities for introspection. This photo pairs well with a quote I like very much.
"What a man is in the sight of God, so much he is, and no more."

St. Francis preached the gospel equally to animals as he did to people. His bird friends were ever present and seemrd to be listening as he spoke the word of God. I created this image by photographing a wooden carving of St. Francis that hangs on the wall in the St. Francis Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

This is a set of 6 items—the "Peruzzi Altarpiece" and the five individual panels. These images have a creative commons license, which you may freely use by linking to their respective pages. Please respect the photographer and his work.
Giotto (1266/1276-1337) is generally credited with being the first painter of the Italian Renaissance. He rejected the emotionless faces and the artificial elongated bodies depicted in Byzantine art. Into his figures he breathed distinct facial features and a sense of the natural body beneath their garments. The depictions are more human, more natural.
Giotto is best known for the Arena frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, which show the life of Christ and the life of the Virgin Mary.
The Peruzzi Altarpiece—The descriptive information at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh credits Giotto “and assistants” with this altarpiece, possibly for the Peruzzi family chapel in the church of S. Croce, Florence, Italy. Consisting of 5 panels (the total polyptych over 8 feet in length), the work is done in tempera and gold leaf and dates from about 700 years ago—circa 1310-1315. From left to right the figures are St. John the Evangelist, the Virgin Mary, Christ, St. John the Baptist, and St Francis of Assisi. It is one of the few complete altarpieces known by the Giotto workshop. It was a gift of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation (1960).
