"My brother birds, you should greatly praise your Creator, and love Him always. He gave you feathers to wear, wings to fly, and whatever you need. God made you noble among His creatures and gave you a home in the purity of the air so that though you neither sow nor reap, He nevertheless protects and governs you without your least care."

– from The Life of St Francis by Thomas of Celano, 1229.

Tradition tell us that St.Francis made the first presepe inviting countrymen to live the charcters of nativity scene.In this small work made in mud, the artist shows us in a poetic way St.Francis and St Claire holdind the presepe pieces that look like children sleeping.

All through the gardens, there is statuary large and small. This statue of St Francis of Assisi is in a little corner of the path that leads up to the Manor House. I just loved the light coming through the trees and the patterns of the maple tree behind him.

Francis of Assisi (1282-1226) was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. His faith became paramount over anything worldy and he is perhaps most known for his love of nature - feeling that all God's creations were part of his brotherhood; the humble sparrow as much his brother as the Pope.

I felt inspired to pay tribute through this spontaneous drawing, to this great Saint on his Feast Day, October 4th; looking intially at a small prayer card and studies of North American birds made on location at a nature reserve in New York State in February 2010.

My heart often feels with America; and so, though Francis of Assisi preached in Italy, I feel now as Saint in Heaven, he would be preaching to all the birds of the world. Included here are interpretations of N. American birds including the Mourning Dove, Cardinal, Slate- Colored Junco & Anna's Hummingbird.

Prayer of St Francis of Assisi:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury,pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

We visited this church in the Old town of Goa on Aug 9, 2006. It's currently undergoing renovation, as you can see from the missing pews and other furniture but was open to the public.

Originally it was constructed during 1517-1521 AD. Initially a chapel, it got converted into a church in 1521 AD and was dedicated to the Holy Ghost in 1602 AD. There used to be a convent in the church. The Portuguese government closed the convent in 1835 AD. The church has been converted into a museum by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1964. The church displays artifacts, paintings and pieces of Hindu temple sculptures from Goa.

This church is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

"The Church of St. Francis has been designed very finely. The church is much smaller than the Se Cathedral and the Basilica of Bom Jesus, and although it’s heavily painted and there are profusely carved altars, the aura is one of muted dignity. The pattern painted on the ceiling near the door has a distinct Indian touch to it. The architecture is a combination of the Tuscan style from the exterior and the Mosaic-Corinthian style from the interior. The interior of the church is gilded with the scenes from the Bible and wall frescoes show intricate floral designs. The niche of the façade holds the statue of St Michael and a wooden statue of St Francis Assisi decorates the pedestal in one of its chapel. A heavily carved niche with tabernacle supported by four evangelists can be seen in the main altar. Two huge statues, one of St Francis Assisi and the other of the Jesus on the Cross, are placed above the tabernacle. "

Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday!

The polychromy by Stanisław Wyspiański (1869-1907) in the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Kraków.

The Franciscans came to Kraków as early as 1237. Almost all of them had known St. Francis who died nine years earlier. St. Francis of Assisi Church built in the years 1237-1269 was founded by Prince Henry II the Pious and it was one of the first brick constructions in Krakow.

Now the most authentic part of the church is the northern elevation of the transept, surviving almost intact in its 13th century form. The stocky proportions of the transept facade show the spirit of the early phase of Gothic. The arcaded moulded-brick frieze adorning the gable is a dircet borrowing from Lombardian architecture. The straight wall of the presbytery was replaced by a three-sided apse in the 15th century.

A place of special beauty are the Gothic cloisters surrounding the rectangular viridarium, dating mostly from the first half of the 15th century.

In 1850 the church and monastery went up in flames of The Great Fire, the same fire which destroyed the interiors of the Dominicans. The reconstruction took several dozen years. But this unfortunate event gave occasion to another extraordinary meeting of styles: the interior was redecorated in Art Nouveau style by the famous Polish artist Stanisław Wyspiański who designed not only the murals that cover the interior of the church, but also the marvellous stained glass windows.

Stanisław Wyspiański (1869–1907) was a Polish playwright, painter and poet, as well as interior and furniture designer. A patriotic writer, he created a series of symbolic, national dramas within the artistic philosophy of the Young Poland Movement. Wyspiański was one of the most outstanding and multifaceted artists of his time in Europe. He successfully joined the trends of modernism with themes of the Polish folk tradition and Romantic history. Unofficially, he came to be known as the Fourth Polish Bard.

Wyspiański’s artistic output is very eclectic. Among dramas and poetry, one can find there views of Kraków (drawings, sketch-books, oil-paintings, pastel drawings), portraits and self-portraits, designs of stained glass windows and paintings, illustrations, graphic art, plans of furniture and interiors, development of Wawel.

I got this lovely statue about 20 years ago when we lived in Chile. It was made in Mexico and I saw it in a garden shop in Santiago and had to have it. So it has traveled quite a few miles from Mexico to Chile to Massachusetts. Not a chip out of him.

Stan has been nagging me about posting to Flickr... Its been a while. And there have been a few grumblings by some of my "fans" too. So I will try to start posting again regularly. Its not for the lack of postable material. :)

The Met continues a holiday tradition with the presentation of its Christmas tree and 18th-century Neapolitan crèche. The installation is set in front of the 18th-century Spanish choir screen from the Cathedral of Valladolid in the Museum's Medieval Sculpture Hall.

The magnificently lit, 20-foot blue spruce is adorned with 19 cherubs and 59 angels, at the base an additional 71 figures represent the three elements of Nativity scenes that were traditional to 18th-century Naples: adoring shepherds and their flocks, the procession of the three Magi, and spirited peasants and townspeople.

St. Francis of Assisi Church (Kirche zum heiligen Franz von Assisi), also known as the Emperor's Jubilee Church (Kaiserjubiläumskirche) and the Mexico Church (Mexikokirche), is a Basilica-style Catholic church in Vienna, Austria. Built between 1898 and 1910, it was consecrated in 1913. It is located on the Mexikoplatz in Vienna's Second District, Leopoldstadt, and is administered by the Order of the Holy Trinity. The construction of the church celebrated the 50th anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria. A competition was held to select the design and it was won by architect Victor Luntz. The four-bay, basilica-like brick building was intended as a garrison church; designed in the Rhenish-Romanesque style, its three red-tiled towers are visible several kilometres away. The church, which is directly situated near the Danube, is now home to the Vienna English Speaking Catholic Community (VESCC) who has held weekly masses at the church since moving there in 2009. The Mexikoplatz (Mexico Square), formerly known as Erzherzog-Karl-Platz (Archduke-Karl-Square), commemorates the fact that Mexico was the only country outside the Soviet Union to protest against the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany.
