Squirrels grow old and die
without ever having been
to Paris.
Where do you go
in search of fairness?
Taking a walk last week,
I saw a woman
carrying a squirrel
in a shovel.
She was taking it to the woods
in our neighborhood,
a place I now think of
as Père Lachaise Cemetery,
poor, sentimental pedestrian
that I am.
I literally could not open my eyes all the way, the sun and snow were so bright.
Three days later I learned I have cataracts and need surgery. Likeliest cause of the cataracts for someone my age is overexposure to UV. Maybe I'll start wearing sunglasses again.
I set out hoping to reach the top of 10,601 foot Church Peak for the first time, but the snow conditions two warm days after the first big snow of the season were terrible, very hard to walk through. I put the snowshoes on for about two miles, and that was okay, but the boot track was crusty when it wasn’t slippery. I was worn out within a few miles and decided to head home via the Galena Creek waterfall once I reached Third Creek Pond.
I sat down and had breakfast at the waterfall. I was there for about 20 minutes and didn’t see a single person.
Six mile loop. The Gaia GPS page for this hike is here.
