Spoon-winged lacewings - Chasmoptera superba
Recently we visited north of Bullfinch and found some exquisite Spoon-winged lacewings.
I'm suddenly selling a lot of pewter, and the spoon is my downfall - it only casts successfully about 50% of the time, and I need two spoons per set, but just one scallop (100% hit rate) and 1 mussel (100% hit rate again). Thus I am awash with shells and denuded of spoons. Only one way to fix that - make a mould that will allow me to pour 4 spoons at once. To do that I need 4 perfect spoons, and the current casts are too iffy to use as masters for a new mould. So off to the 3D printers we will go - model spoon, replicate in CAD file 4 times, ship to Shapeways, make mould on their return. Then make another mould for the hell of it. Once I can pour 4 spoons, put aside, pour another 4, put aside, pour mussel, pour scallop, I will have so many spoons I will not know what to do with them. But that's a good problem to have. And if volumes get really high I'll just build a mould with 2 scallops in it and another with 2 mussels, so I can go 4 spoons / pair of A / pair of B / single A / single B repeat, plenty of cool down time with 5 moulds active, I can afford to lose 1 in 3 of the cast spoons, and I'll be running 3x faster than right now. And if I can reach the point where I am casting 100 sets of each in a 3 hour session, I'll be running a one-person factory ...
These things are tiny, in case it isn't obvious - the handles are about 5cm long.
The spoon drawer is a fascinating place. It contains all manner and shape of spoon. They are Omni-present, rarely appreciated, yet immensely useful.

Here's a cluster of 4 fresh out of the mould - the one on the far right is a failure, it will be remelted.

My resolution was to process less (or better) this year but I only took one photo and it was so rubbish and out of focus that I've had to process it to within an inch of its life just to get an image I'm vaguely ok with. Must give myself more than one option - lesson learned.

This car is fully Spoon'd up. My first time shooting in a studio, very fun. Car was shot for the January 2009 Issue of Super Street.
My wife and I bought this book many years ago, we rather liked having some silver spoons — but ours weren't valuable.

One of my personal challenges at the moment is a vague 'make cool things using spoons' I'm trying to avoid the traditional silverware jewelry you see, and in fact am mostly thinking of non jewelry objects.
To start I bought a handful of spoons from the thrift store and have spent a little time getting to know them. This is the 2'nd spoon I've altered. I liked the basic, minimal pattern on this one.
I'm not sure what I'll do with the bowl of the spoon, but the handle is a ring and what will be a pendant.
