2011-09-17 Upper Austria, district Rohrbach/OÖ - Zimmermoos (720 msm Quadrant 7448/2).
The uprooted tree as well as most trees in the background is Picea abies (in a habitat where, naturally, a mixed forest of spruce, fir and beech should dominate, so not quite as natural a habitat as it looks).
The moss species present here however are both typical and native for this habitat. Most prominent one here is Polytrichum formosum as well as some other (unidentified) Polytrichum species, then one Plagiochila asplenioides (?!), a few Hylocomium splendens mixed in (none prominent in the foreground), and in the background (in bokeh) there's also some Sphagnum species present.
Does this not look like a hoard of listening devices. This was on a small tree at Nanoose River Estuary just north of Nanaimo. They remind me of something you might have seen in the movie Avatar.

2010.05.09 Austria, Upper Austria, district Freistadt (930 m AMSL).
The bog begins where Pinus uncinata grows, to the right in the photo (just left of it, and also in the background, Picea abies; and also in the background some specimens of Betula pubescens are visible).
In Mühlviertel not too common, restricted to moorish parts of higher lying regions.
German name: Moor-Spirke
ID: Fischer & al., Exkursionsflora (2008 3rd): the authors specifically refer to the Upper Austrian populations too, which show features of both Pinus mugo and Pinus uncinata, and they suggest that this is most likely a transitional population between both, so essentially a hybrid population; however, the exact taxonomical position of those is still discussed controversially. So for now I am tagging this photos with both the suggested hybrid name as well as (both) possible parental species: P. x rotundata (P. mugo ssp. rotundata - EOL), P. mugo, P. uncinata.
See comment of Sciadopity: P. uncinata removed, P. mugo ssp. rotundata by reckoning of Sciadopitys, and P. x rotundata by Fischer & al.

2011-08-27 Upper Austria, district Freistadt - Tanner Moor/ raised bog (930 msm Quadrant 7455/3).
German name: Latsche, or also (and scientifically incorrect) "Moor-Spirke" (a name used only for this subspecies which is growing half-way upright)
Growing on Sphagnum: this is not solid ground but 'spongy', only that now it is very dry (after two weeks of extreme heat), and for this reason it is was even possible to walk over the raised bog on some places.
On the ground one finds also Vaccinium vitis-idaea, a few Vaccinium myrtillus, and also few Vaccinium uliginosum.
For discussion about the classification of this variety of Pinus mugo see also remarks and discussion here.
2011-08-27 Upper Austria, district Freistadt - Tanner Moor/ raised bog (930 msm Quadrant 7455/3).
German name: Preiselbeere
Growing on Sphagnum; the trees are Pinus mugo nothosubsp. rotundata; and there's also Vaccinium uliginosum and Vaccinium oxycoccos.
2010.07.11 NÖ, Heidenreichstein (raised bog, 605 msm Quadrant 7156/2).
Common in its habitat, but habitat rare.
Flowering in july/august; here only just developing flowering stems.
German name: Rundblatt-Sonnentau
Here also with Sphagnum species and Vaccinium microcarpum (Kleine Torfbeere).
ID: Fischer & al., Exkursionsflora (2008 3rd)

A series of shots which shows the slow progression from raised bog to reed zone to the pond: this one here shows still, more or less, a raised bog: the brownish Sphagnum cover still is clearly visible, same goes for the white balls of Eriophorum seeds; and grounds are still firm enough for Pinus to grow.
German names: Schmallblatt-Wollgras, Torfmoos, Rot-Föhre

Harewood Plains above South Nanaimo is known for its rare flowers and other plants like this beautiful red moss that grows near some springs.
Lycoperdon pyriforme, commonly known as the pear-shaped puffball or stump puffball, is a saprobic fungus present throughout much of the world. Emerging in autumn, this puffball is common and abundant on decaying logs of both deciduous and coniferous wood. It is considered a choice edible when still immature and the inner flesh is white.

This fungi almost looks like barnacles as it grows on the side of a log with a beautifully green lichen near the Englishman River Falls north of Nanaimo.
