Mardi Gras Sydney 2012; Kylie Minogue, Connie Mitchell, Magda Szubanski Comes Out In Wet

The weather in Sin City Sydney last night was wet, but spirits were high.

Expectations were high and this years Mardi Gras delivered.

The massive crowd was really well behaved and all of the police officers we encountered were very friendly and helpful.

Mardi Gras was broadcast worldwide via the internet (powered by Optus) for the virgin time, and about 300,000 spectators crowded along Oxford St and took in the almost 3-hour long show.

There was a wonderful spread of floats and all manner of glitter and sexy creations, with feathers boas, lots of colour, sequin and skin being all the rage.

Almost all the floats had the same message - equal rights for everyone.

Politicians weren't going to be left out of the festivities, with Sydney Mayor Clover Moore, who has supported the parade since 1986, turning out with a team of supporters.

The ALP was also represented with the rainbow Labor marriage equality float, with Tanya Plibersek on board.

And the Liberal Party also had their spot in the parade.

Last year, Barry O'Farrell announced that he would allow a conscious vote for NSW Liberal members on the issue of gay marriage.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard allowed the same for her Labor Party members in 2011, resulting in the party voting in favour of the move.

Greens senator Sarah Hansen-Young, who confessed she was "not a virgin" of the Mardi Gras, said the parade was an opportunity to celebrate how far the Marriage Equality Campaign had come in parliament.

"We have several bills in parliament," she said.

"Tony Abbott now has to step out of the way and let his party catch up with the people."

The parade is an annual event by the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which aims to raise the visibility of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex communities.

Ms Hansen-Young said the Mardi Gras was an important event not just for those involved but for the nation.

"It (the parade) has grown to the point where it's not just the Sydney community but the whole Australian community saying yes, let's celebrate diversity," she said.

Kylie Minogue, who is celebrating 25 years in the music industry this year, was in Sydney for the parade.

The pop princess later performed at the Mardi Gras after-party at Hordern Pavilion in front of a packed and steamy house.

The Morning After...

"We are a very proud community this morning," said festival CEO Michael Rolik.

He thanked the almost 10,000 people who took part in the parade of 134 floats.

Pop princess Kylie Minogue won a special mention for making the trip down under, with the K25 float of more than 130 dancers paying homage to the singer and her 25-year career in the music industry.

"It was just one of a myriad of amazing entrants that made this year's parade one of the most exhilarating we've ever seen," Mr Rolik said.

"Kylie's visit is a very special gift to Sydney this year and our K25 float was a way of returning that love back to her."

Despite 13 arrests, police were also pleased with the night.

More than 1000 officers patrolled the city while others elected to be part of the entertainment.

Assistant NSW Police Commissioner Alan Clarke said a contingent of officers who marched in the parade received a positive response from the crowd.

The 13 arrests in the CBD, Surry Hills and Darlinghurst areas were for drugs, assault, street and other offences.

"(It) was about ensuring everyone had a good time and celebrated in a safe environment, without fear of drug-and-alcohol-related violence and anti-social behaviour," Mr Clarke said.

Tens of thousands of people lined the streets to watch the world-renowned show.

"We continue to show the world the rich and wonderfully diverse LGBTQI culture that exists in Australia while promoting equality, acceptance and love on an international scale," said festival chair Peter Urmson.

"We should all be very proud of how brightly Sydney shines during this magical time of year."

Destination NSW research has found Sydney Mardi Gras attracts more than 20,000 overseas and interstate visitors who come for the event, injecting around $30 million into the state economy.

Celeb News...

Sneaky Sound System's Connie Mitchell: You bet I could marry a woman...

Sneaky Sound System's Connie Mitchell has told the world she is bisexual and supports the legalisation of gay marriage.

Speaking before her performance at last night's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras party, the performer told the press she's open to falling in love with a woman.

"I'm quite a big fan of a little bit of both (men and women) you know," she says with a smile.

She's also a supporter of gay marriage: "If you want to get married, you should be able to get married to whoever you want - and that includes marrying a goat if you feel like it."

Mitchell was previously in a relationship with US rapper Kanye West, with whom she has collaborated on a number of songs.

Single now, Mitchell says she is open to a long-term relationship with a woman.

"I don't think you can ever know who you are going to fall in love with. It's not something that you can put your finger on," she says.

"If I was in love, yeah sure I'd marry a woman."

Mitchell's revelation comes a few weeks after actor Magda Szubanski came out as a lesbian.

Mitchell is of the belief discrimination is still an enormous issue.

"People like to put their hands up when the spotlight is on them but behind closed doors it's a completely different story," she says. "As far as everything has come, there's still a lot of work to be done."

Well done to everyone involved in the preparation and execution of Sydney Mardi Gras.

Original Reggae Sound System beim Myfest 2010 in Berlin

www.mcsrecords.f9.co.uk/jah youth sound system.htm

The name of the sound speaks for itself and watching this sound system in operation is to behold some true masters at work.

Originally set up 1975, Jah Youth Sound system is today one of the top roots sound systems in the United Kingdom and Europe. Although based in the UK, they have traveled extensively throughout Europe and Africa taking a conscious and cultural reggae music to the youths. The sound has a minimum crew of 10 persons among them there are singers D.J,s operators and selectors.

You have also probably heard their D.J’s Culture Marvellous & Prince Liv-I-Jah chat lyrical consciousness, Ras Echo sing angelic tones and melodies for Rastafari. Bro. Bud the flag bearer. Brother Locks-Lee Selects all your favourite reggae tunes from yesteryear to today, and Jah Youth operate and mix around riddims to create that extra special atmosphere.

You will have seen their clean customised, red painted boxes standing strong, tall and upright, piled high in the dancehalls and bellowing out those black experience sounds of Rastafari Roots and Culture.

Jah Youth Sound have toured internationally with famous artists such as Dr. Aliman-Tado, Burning Spear, Augustus Pablo, Gregory Isaacs, and Third World, and have played alongside all the top UK roots sound systems including Jah Shaka, Fatman, Quaker City and Moambassa – to mention a few- AND more recently, the new wave of digital dub sounds!

However, over the years most of the sound systems the world-over seem to be struggling to remain true to the Roots of Reggae music culture and have changed with these trendy ‘times’

This is not so with Jah Youth they have maintained that core element of Roots Music and Reggae Culture, and it is probably this that you have found so attractive, Inspiring and captivatingly good!

They enjoyed massive success in the 1970’s, and 1980’s and now are on top of their chosen profession in the 1990’s.

AND WHY ARE THEY CALLED ‘ROOTS AMBASSADORS’?

In 1987 Jah Youth Sound had a calling to Africa. As they headed for Kenya it would soon became evident they would have to fly in the whole Sound System and before long the were playing music in city halls from Kenya to Zimbabwe to Ghana.

Their success was such that they were named "Roots Ambassadors" a name that has stuck with them ever since.

In 1992 when they returned to the U.K. It was half of the sound system that came back. The other half was left with a group of native Kenyan youths called Jah Youth Crew, adopted by Jah Youth during their time there. They continued to maintain that root of reggae culture and preserve that works set up there.

Jah Youth Sound System works spans many areas of the globe and has toured in:

Austria, (Vienna Roots Dance) Gambia, (All over during the Millennium Period)

Belgium, (Reggae 99 Festival) France, (Celebration Dance)

Germany, (Munich) Holland, (Reggae Sun Dance)

This was bike number three in the most incredible sound system I've seen on CM.

These speakers projected tunes picked up wirelessly from the 'sound cannon' bike.
