“Sound System” investigates how four speaker boxes delineate, by their presence and by their sound / volume, a space that is, emotional, ideological as well as physical....I began by placing speaker boxes in each corner of the drawings, referring to how the thump of the base track (the legacy of Calypso, Soca, Reggae and Dancehall) defines arena or space...

I have always loved album art. My father has a whole treasure trove sitting in the closet and he won't let me "borrow" his Technics turntable from way back when (I plan on putting the albums up in my loft soon). I've always been into music because of him and that glorious marvel that WAS MTV as a kid in the 80s. And growing up I always worked and had extra cash to blow at Lou's Records, Just Play Music, or whatever place I could get my fix.
I loved the art, the liner notes, the thank yous, etc. It killed me when my first book of 200 CDs (and guitar) was stolen out of my car while working at Legoland living Kevin Spacey's dream. Home owners insurance covered the stolen discs IF I sent in the album covers. At which point I went on a massive spending spree, only to find them ripped off again by the crackheads in Home Depots parking lot while I returned their stolen goods for cash. Insurance covers again and drops me. Go on another binge... Only to have that book stolen again when ghetto rats threw spark plugs through my car window. Such a vicious cycle. Obviously I don't bring all my CDs anymore (but I don't own an iPod).
Well, this is what I have left and the collection keeps growing thanks to Used CDs online for under $10. Now it's all a pile in the corner of my room until I figure out how I'm going to put this mess up on my wall.

Another shot of the Sound-system forming part of the procession, you can just make out a dragon further behind in the dark.
This is "Kremah", a production by the Spanish street theatre company "Sarruga" that formed the basis of Kirklees Council's "Spirit" event that happens each year in Dewsbury (each year is something different, generally revolving around street theatre/gymnastics/music etc).
The event featured three fire-breathing (or rather smoking) dragons, and a knight on horseback - first there was a procession around the town centre, then culminating with a battle between the knight and the dragons (the knight lost). All taking place to a pounding techno beat provided by a vehicle that was basically a driving, rotating speaker-rack.
The dragons were impressive - they're built around little carts (you can see a man below the dragon), and through mechanics give the impression of walking along, looking around, and blast out jets of smoke.
Massilia Sound System is a band formed in Marseille more than 30 years ago. I learned, that MSS is one of the most popular bands in the south of France. They mix reggae with HipHop and Electro Sounds and performe in French - and Occitan. The audience was absolutely thrilled, when the three MCs launched the firework of speed and sound.
Fltr: René Mazzarino (aka "Papet J"), Laurent Garibaldi (aka "Gari Greu") and François Ridel (aka "Moussu T").
The evening in Carcassonne:
4 April 2008
The Brum Critical Mass ride included a towable sound system. Alas, the battery died between the owner's house and the ride, so he had to tow it around, but we had no tunes.
There was some attempt to see if something was wrong with it. It had LEDs blinking inside. ooooh.
