"The Burning Bush of the Desert"—A night photo of the otherworldly curves of "Truth Arrives in Slanted Beams," a Desert X art installation by Sarah Meyohas. I perched my camera on a tripod, opened the shutter for a long time, then walked around lighting the scene with a handheld LED light. So this was definitely unintentional, and frankly, I'm happy with how it is. It gives the whole rule-of-thirds a slant. I've never been a fan of following the conventional, textbook-style images.

Looking down from Devils Dyke this slanted tree caught my eye. Composing the shot so the tree was upright gave an interesting perspective on the road and fields behind.
It looks like I tilted my camera while taking this shot, but in fact all the trees lean to one side here.

Rocks in the Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, CA. The rocks in the Hills are geologically related to the Sierra Mountains but are a separate formation. These are Metamorphosed volcanic rock and are 150 to 200 million years old. It always amazes me in the West looking at all these different rock formations and learning of their history. Blows me away thinking that these rocks have been here that long and probably will be for another 200 million years after we are long gone.
When we travel along the byways out west I use the roadside geology series of books. There is one for every state. Each major interstate and US highway is covered by the mile markers of the road. As you travel you can read about all the geology you see.
