Children as young as 5 years old work producing sarees, learning from older workers as they go. Saree weavers work in 12 hour shifts, and the factory is never idle day or night. Every worker is an extended relative of the factory owner. Workers are paid by the meter and earn approximately 5,000 Rs ($100.00) a month. Opportunity for advancement is rare, though an extremely skilled worker may be advanced to a shift manager in some cases. Silk weavers generally retire by the age of 50 at the latest.

The Tyler auction featured both of the Elspeth Eagle Clarke Chad Valley jigsaws from the 1930s. I had a copy of Dragon's Land with one piece missing so I was tempted to bid on this one when the price was so low. The other will go to my best friend so her grandchildren can enjoy it.
Tom said that there was a third one - even rarer than Elfin and rumours of a fourth (Robin Hood), but I've never seen a copy of those.
Lot 3 - Chad Valley 'Dragon's Land', 1933 81pc, 15.5x17in, every piece a picture. Box good with 3 original trays. Est £100 - sold for £60.
Lot 6 - Chad Valley, 'The Elfin Jigsaw', 1933 57pc, c15x17in, no original box but original box label. Est £125 - sold for £105.
The original packaging had a box with three trays and at least two designs of label.
The Jigasaurus entry for Dragon's Land:
www.thejigasaurus.com/jigasaurus/v/chad_valley/dragons_land/
"Wonderful example of the combined artistry of cutter and the talented illustrator Elspeth Eagle-Clarke, who created this fascinating fantasy painting. Every individual character or shape has been intricately line-cut around and when assembled, all fit neatly together in an interlocking frame surround.
Categorised by Chad Valley in their own words as: "Puzzle for the Connoisseur", they go on to describe it as:
"This fantasy reproduced in glowing hues by a gifted artist, has been cunningly cut from wood by skilled workers. Every, elf, swan, mermaid and fish, is a picture in itself, colourful and complete, yet each dovetailing together into the brilliant design we illustrate".
The box includes separate trays to help store and sort the pieces. A companion puzzle, "Elfin" was also produced."
A modern jigsaw in the spirit of Elfin & Dragon's Land can be found at Infinity Puzzles - 96pc Awe , 95pc Dune , 183pc Leap (with two small taster puzzles of 16pc & 32pc). These also tile like wallpaper, so have a large number of possible outlines.
This staff house is almost completed. Building comfortable accommodations is an important element of our work, as it entices skilled workers to apply at our rural wellness facility.

Workforce Development, Training, and Education
Success in today’s economy has been made possible by highly skilled workers. With the exponential rise in the advancement of technology, companies’ ability to educate, retrain, and reskill their workers has become a critical competitive advantage, while also yielding higher wages and social mobility. A shortfall in government support has increased pressure on companies to bolster their learning and development functions, forcing them to increasingly align with business strategies. This discussion will highlight practices to prepare a workforce to adapt and perform in an ever-changing landscape of technology and work environments.

The Romans introduced new styles of architecture to Britain. Buildings were rectangular, with individual rooms that had a specific purpose. Skilled workers painted plaster walls and laid flagstone floors. Mosaics were rarely used in the north. People kept warm and did their cooking using metal braziers and fires. Civilians associated with the army lived in the vici (civil settlements) outside the forts. Military and civilian families had slaves working for them. The Romans preferred people to live in towns, where it was easier to tax them but few towns were built in the frontier zone.

The Skilled Workers
This is for Epiphany .
And this is the transformation taking place of the Mosque.. I prefer the earlier pinkish look but every monument wants to boast specially one that resembles the Taj Mahal.. I did not have my 20mm lens or I had great possibilities but I shall shoot it this time when I am in Lucknow... Epiphany would freak , not want to come back such is the grandeur and charm of Lucknow..
The event of Sakinas Taboot and majlis is today at home I have to hang around the shop for another hour as it is a woman thing and guys are not allowed.. this is a Samiya sponsored and pioneered event so her word is law..
All this was exclusively posted at Buzznet first in the ealier days of my blogging Aug 2005
I beg you be logical in the design and structure of your work, in syntax . . . be a skillful builder, both in small things and in the whole . . . love words, as Flaubert did, exercise economy in your means, thrift in the use of words, precision and authenticity--then you will discover the secret of a wonderful thing: beauty clarity. --Mikhail Kuzmin, 1910
Although written previous to the inception of Acmeism in 1912, Kuzman's address has often been perceived as the manifesto for Acmeism. He calls for fellow poets to seek beauty in the natural and physical world of their environment--to be industrious in language and vision in order to reflect the realness of the subject.
Acmeism, a school in modern Russian poetry, formed after fracturing away from Symbolism--then the dominant school of the Russian literary scene, which often used words as symbols to express high romanticism in the prophetic and portentousness of the beyond. To the Acmeist, the role of the poet was not to be an oracle or a diviner but a skilled worker. They revolted against Symbolism's vagueness and attempts to privilege emotional suggestion over clarity and vivid sensory images.
Acmeism's significant leading poets were Anna Akhmatova, Nikolai Gumilëv, and Osip Mandelstam). While each of these poets called into question the realness of everyday life's experiences, Acmeism manifested differently in each poets' oeuvre: one of modern Russia's esteemed lyricist Akhmatova had a very intimate verse of love and witnessing; Gumil¨v defined his verse as a straightforward narrative; Mandelstam found poetic expression that combined classical themes with semantically compact imagery.
Is this just Germany or are all builders like this? This is the second time--the first was a different company, who did the work on the foundation last fall--that a group of builders have simply dumped their leftover concrete onto our grass. This is not sand or mud--this is HARD concrete. Herr Doktor Der Husband smashed the other pile up and carted it down to the city dump, but with this company he called them up and yelled until they agreed they'd come clean it up (some day). I mean, are there customers who are just, like, "Oh, fair enough, I guess that's here forever now"?! WHAT?!
The rudeness we've experienced has been insane. From what I hear, there is such an incredible shortage of skilled workers in Germany that they are basically dictators now and can do anything they want.
The company we hired to repair the roof--third group of German craftsmen we've had contact with this year--charged us 500 euro to repair the hole in the roof over our bed. Two weeks after the repair, there was the first rain--it poured straight in in the same place. I called them and explained, and the boss not only didn't apologize or have anything courteous or professional to say but his only answer was immediately snapping, "There are other people in Dresden who have roofs other than you, you know! Your name is on a list--I'll call you when I call you. Don't call me again." That was, um, April. It's still raining into the bedroom.
These 99 stairs are unmarked but very easy to find, situated at the far end of the Quayside before Ouseburn and the Cycle Hub.
St Ann’s is also accessible from the quiet Breamish Street, as well much busier City Road and the 99 St Ann’s Stairs from the Quayside.
St. Ann’s is a Grade 1 listed church consecrated in 1768. There has been a church on this site since medieval times. The present church was largely built with stone from the City Walls. The churchyard is among the last within the city to be closed for burials and is the resting place of many who died in the last great cholera epidemic.
St Ann’s Church served as a Quayside church. Its various savings clubs, societies, guilds and festivals supported local Battlefield families through good times and bad. Today, St Ann’s gives its name to the whole Battlefield area, now a quiet council estate built in the 1960s to replace the older terraces.
St Ann’s Church is today the major landmark of the Battlefield, standing proud above the east Quayside. Originally established as a chapel of All Saints, the church became increasingly important to the area as the eastward expansion of the Quayside brought an influx of largely unskilled and semi-skilled workers to the area.
Until the 1880s much of the Battlefield was open ground, but thereafter the area was covered with terraces of flats and houses laid out in streets named after Northumbrian rivers – Pont Street, Breamish Street, Coquet Street, Wansbeck Street, Rede Street, and Blyth Street. These flats tended to be roomier and better built than similar properties in the lower Ouseburn, and Battlefield residents had a strong sense of local identity that focused more on the Tyne riverfront than the Ouseburn or Shieldfield.

The major lobby for Bill C50 comes from employer organizations and business lobbies who want immigration policy to meet labour market needs, meaning immigrants are disposable other than their value as cheap labour. These proposed legislative changes come in the context of a global capitalist and nationalist reinforcement of labour flexibility as the guiding principle of immigration policy, where migrants are only as valuable as their labour. In conjunction with the Security and Prosperity Partnership Agreement, it is clear that the priorities will be relatively wealthy people applying under the skilled worker program and investor classes, as well as increasingly vulnerable temporary migrant workers.

Attending the EuroSkills Budapest Conference on 27 September 2018, EUROCHAMBRES President Christoph Leitl underlined the importance that education and training is in tune with the skills needs of the private sector.
As the economy evolves faster than ever due to technological breakthroughs, curricula content and the way it is delivered must prepare young people for emerging new opportunities and enable them to adapt to future needs that cannot yet be predicted.
The last edition of EUROCHAMBRES’ annual economic survey of over 50.000 businesses across Europe revealed a lack of skilled workers one of the greatest challenges. This is in line with a longer term trend, as the skills mismatch issue has been a problem for several years, in times of both high and low unemployment. “We have more graduates than ever in Europe and incredibly talented young people entering the labour force. But what good is this if they cannot find work and employers cannot find staff with the right skills? We must do better in ensuring that education prepares young people for current and emerging employment opportunities”, President Leitl said.
Euroskills plays an important role in addressing this persistent skills mismatch across Europe by showcasing the professional skills sought by many employers across a wide range of sectors. It is also based on a pan-European approach, which Chambers consider an important element in matching supply and demand. “Employers, policy-makers and educators must work together to ensure that vocational education is perceived by young people as a positive option that opens up excellent career opportunities and offers an international perspective. Euroskills is a fantastic way to do this”, President Leitl stated.
Professional training must be dynamic, not static
A World Economic Forum report this month set out how the labour market is set for radical changes as technological advances and artificial intelligence accelerate. President Leitl argued that this underlines the need for reforms: “The economy is evolving faster than ever, but unfortunately our education and training systems generally are not keeping up. Curricula must adapt based on feedback from the economy and so must the way in which curricula is taught. As well as acquiring technical skills, young people need transversal skills that will allow them to adapt throughout their career”.
EUROCHAMBRES calls in particular for the development of more effective vocational training and apprenticeship schemes in many member states, for the closer involvement of businesses in the design of curricula and for more dynamic and interoperable skills forecasting tools to be developed across Europe.
