The window above the font is made from the fragments of broken windows which used to be in the nave of this church before it became the Cathedral. The design, which combines the Cross, the Anchor (symbol of hope) and a Tree (symbol of life), and includes also a blue expanse for the water of Baptism, and many heads of watching saints and angels.
Designed by John Hayward, it incorporates, in abstanct form, glass from the thirty windows that wer taken out of the parish church nave when the building was extended for use as a cathedral.
Centreal is a tree of life set against a cross, which is surmounted by a crown of thorns and is itself set against a great pool of water, across which blood-stained bands of cloth are draped to form an anchor of faith. At the tope of the tree its leaves and fruits take the form of the faces of saints. Great pillars of the Spirits’s fire - which also appear as great monolithic blocks to represent the history of Christianity in Britain - flank this central exploration of baptism as the sacrament which initiates the Christian believer into the mysteries of cross and resurrection. Around the central features are the heads of thirty saints and angels and at the base is a Virgin and Child, surrounded by what John Hayward described as ‘everyday acts of mery’, representing the fruits of each person’s baptism. Completed in 1967, the work is amazingly resourceful in ‘bringing new life’ from its ancient sources.
