the setup of the poor mans product shoot studio
Black foam core for base and backdrop white foam core used as a bounce card.
Propped up by a tripod with some clamps attached to em.
The same setup used in the latest "Fireman's 4" photo.
Shoot-through top made of the finest Heftyâ„¢ kitchen trashbag.
Shoot-through side ports 5x9", 3" from the rear of the box, and 5" from the floor. Diffusion material = printer paper.
Strobist:
2x Vivitar 285HV, 1/4 power, through the sides of my $3 white box.
The setup for my first strobist-style experiments. The sunlight through the patio door didn't enter into the picture as I blocked it with some white foam core that I was using as a fill.
Note super-nerdy Canon decal on the Macbook with which I was shooting tethered!
Foam core: $5 at Michael's (Canadian craft store)
Background: banner paper also from Michael's, $15 for 30" x 75'.

This was the set up for Day 84. I stood watching and I got my daughter, aged 5, to fan the flames for me. Seems a little unfair somehow!
