Portable setup for audio field recording with A/B stereo and XY stereo. The flash arms allow easy adjustment of the distance and position of the omni mics (LOM mikroUši Pro). The XY microphones can be used for a slightly more directed recording or omitted to save weight. Positioning the two omnis very close together and close to the sound source gives a "sonic microscope" effect. The flash bracket is ARCA Swiss compatible, so I can use it with a mini tripod as a handle or on a full size tripod. To be used for making recordings of Unnatural Language (www.michaelang.com/project/unnatural-language) at Dinacon in the jungle in Panama. Inspiration from Colin Hunter and Chris Watson.

Here's the Gitzo and Arca Swiss with my very sophisticated studio setup and a lot of mess.

In fact cleaning up and sorting out this space is a high priority. I think I will go and do it right now!

Another thing on the priority list is to get rid of my camera strap!

SB900 is at the back of the box pointing into it. The orchid is in front of a tracing paper covered window in the box. A piece of black card over the tracing paper only allows light through the edges of the window. The pieces of card around the box act as reflectors to direct the light from the sides and above.

Welcome to my "studio."

Meine erstes Timelaps-Setup.

Setup for Toronto Taste started Saturday evening. It continued all through the night, with Chefs and their teams starting to arrinve around noon. Everything was finally wrapped up by about 5:30pm Sunday, when, mysteriously the fire alarm went off and we all got locked into the ROM.

But the Toronto Fire Department camed and has us up and running just in time to open the doors for the VIPs. Wow!

Disclosure: I'm on the steering committee so while I get an insider's view, I'm also biased.

Get an idea of what they will look like when glassed on.

The setup operations are upstairs away from the dust of the factory floor operations. Here is where all of the non-wooden parts of the instruments come together: frets, strings, nut, bridge, tuners.

Also, more elaborate & decorative elements are installed, such as purfling / binding around the body and soundholes. It is interesting to note that from this point on most of the instrument augmentation is visibly quantifiable. Meaning that the precision is critical. However, a SIGNIFICANT portion of the sound quality has already been determined.

My set up with the new Apple wireless keyboard.

You can see the softbox and one of the kickers (just at the left edge of the frame) in this photo. The other kicker is behind Stefan on the opposite side, just out of frame. The radio trigger is on Steve's camera, so I took this photo in ambient light with a longer shutter speed so that I could time the flash. I knocked down the exposure in Lightroom to make the softbox more obvious.

This set-up is basically what Steve was using tp take this photo: www.flickr.com/photos/smile4steve/28048486680/in/pool-124...

Strobist info:

* Kicker: SB-24 and a Honl grid, back camera right, about 1 o'clock.

Two Vivitar 285hvs behind subject one meter, and to either side one meter, aiming directly at his head, at full zoom. Both are through 3/4 Windows Blue gels, at 1/4 power ( for fast recycle times and allowing me to use a smaller aperture so that the background blurs). White 60" reflector hand held in the front to bounce some fill onto his face. Triggered via skyports.
